AquaticsGroup Parent Child Swim (Ages 6 months to 3 years) Promotes water enrichment and aquatic-readiness activities for children and their parents or other trusted adults. In this program, the developmental experiences of each child are used to build the child's self-confidence. Parents learn from the instructor's example how to guide their children through positive reinforcement and appropriate praise. So let's just pool it!

There are four levels based on developmental abilities:

Shrimps (6-8mos) Child can control their head and sit with support from the hands.

Kippers (9-12mos) Child can sit without hand support and stand with support from the hands. Inias (13-18mos) Child can stand without support and walk with or without support or aid.

Inias (13-18mos) Child can stand without support and walk with or without support or aid.

Perch (19-36mos) Child can run and jump. Instructors are certified in the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Program.

Group Preschool Swim Children (Ages 3-5) These programs offer children their first experience in the water without a parent. Children are taught basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming, including: water propulsion, floating, body awareness and independence. They are also taught some general aquatic safety and pool games. Children will be taught with and without the use of various instructional flotation devices.

School Age Group Swim Lessons This program follows the YMCA of the USA’s guidelines to swim lessons. There is a focus on five main points: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports & games, and rescue. Classes maybe combined based on enrollment.

Level 1: POLLIWOG This is the beginning level for school age children and is appropriate for anyone new to the water or with little formal instruction. Children will learn the basic paddle stroke on their front, back and sides, kicking skills and will become comfortable putting their face in the water.

Level 2: GUPPY - In this class swimmers will learn to front and back float 1-minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive. Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to front and back float for 30 seconds with or without an IFD; paddle 25 yards on their front, back and side with an IFD, and 15 feet without an IFD; jump in without assistance; be comfortable in deep water.

Level 3: MINNOW - In this class swimmers will learn to do a standing dive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke 25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basic sidestroke 25 yards; and tread water 1 minute. Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to front and back float 1-minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive.

Level 4: FISH - In this class swimmers will learn to tread water for 3-minutes; swim 50 yards front crawl; swim 50 yards breaststroke with legal kick and arm pulls; swim 50 yards backstroke; swim 50 yards elementary backstroke with a glide; swim 50 yards sidestroke with a scissors kick; and swim 15 yards butterfly. Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to do a standing dive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke 25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basic sidestroke 25 yards; and tread water 1 minute.

Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to tread water for 3-minutes; swim 50 yards front crawl; swim 50 yards breaststroke with legal kick and arm pulls; swim 50 yards backstroke; swim 50 yards elementary backstroke with a glide; swim 50 yards sidestroke with a scissors kick; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Level 6: SHARK - In this class swimmers will learn to take their own heart rate; learn about open water and backyard pool safety; swim 100 yards from crawl with flip turns; swim 100 yards breaststroke with pull-out; swim 50 yards inverted breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke with dolphin kick and pullout; swim 50 yards over arm side stroke; swim 25 yards butterfly with streamline; and swim 200 yards individual medley. Prerequisite: To enter this level, children should be able to do a flip turn; swim 100 yards front crawl with bilateral breathing; swim 100 yards breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim 100 yards elementary backstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternating sides; swim 100 yards lifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Level 7: PORPOISE - This level differs from other levels in that the format allows older children and teens the opportunity to develop a program that fits their interests after they complete the Shark Level. Participants will expand upon the five main points of YMCA swim lessons in create ways that they help develop while they learn leadership skills and the value of community service.

New This Summer! This summer we are offering special 2-week mini-sessions to provide you with concentrated swim lesson sessions throughout the summer months. These sessions will allow you or your child to quickly build upon skills learned and progress at a more rapid rate. They also provide ultimate flexibility for busy summer schedules.

FITNESSNEW Program The Zumba® Kids program is the ultimate dance-fitness party for young Zumba fans ages 7-11, where they can play it loud and rock with friends to their own rules! This program features age-appropriate music and moves that get kids moving’ to the beat. It’s all about feeling fearless on the dance floor, reinforcing the idea that it’s okay to just be yourself and dance like no one’s watching! Saturday 9 a.m. - 10 a.m.

Program fees: Day Camp: $140 per week Before Care: $10 per week After Care: $10 per week

Payment and Financial Assistant For all campers, a $45 per family ($10 for each additional child) registration fee is due upon registration. There will be a $25 deposit due for each week your child is registered for camp, which will be credited toward your weekly camp fees. The balance of your fee is due no later than 7:30pm the Friday before the following week of camp begins. A $25 late fee will be assessed for payments made after Friday. Your child will not be allowed in camp if fees are not paid. All deposits and fees are non-refundable.

*Checks for camp payments are not accepted

Cancellations/Refunds/Credits Refunds or credits for a camp are available prior to June 1, 2014 only! However, the deposit of $25 per week for the full day camps is a non-refundable deposit. Specialty Camps must be paid in full upon registration.

Financial Assistance South Chicago YMCA is an Action for Children Provider. The South Chicago YMCA has limited financial assistance for Summer Camp, available through Action for Children (previously known as Day Care Action Council).
