At Frost Valley YMCA, summer provides the perfect opportunity for your child or teen to reach new heights as they experience exciting activities, meet peers from around the world, enjoy values-based fun, and participate in time-honored traditions.

During Summer Camp 2016, campers gain the wisdom, friendships, responsible habits, and leadership skills that will help them through their personal journeys, even into adulthood. And it all starts here.

When families bring their children to Frost Valley YMCA, they know their camper will grow, learn, have fun, and explore the magnificent nature of the Catskills, all under the guidance of a caring, trained, professional staff. Each day is filled with new experiences and favorite pastimes, focused on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

Creativity is encouraged during wood working, pottery, and other arts and crafts. Campers stay active by swimming in Lake Cole, hiking to our waterfall High Falls, taking a dance class, and soaring down a zipline. In our Teaching Kitchen and gardens, they’ll learn how to make nutritious recipes and gain a new appreciation of making healthy decisions. And, of course, there are plenty of songs and stories around the campfire, cheers and gratitude expressed during mealtimes, and our annual All-Camp Activities, such as the Small World Fair, Olympix Games, Hirdstock talent show, and more.

SUMMER OVERNIGHT CAMPImagine you are here on a warm summer day. You hike up the trail toward the cool spray of High Falls. Later, you and your new friends start a game of gaga ball that you’ll be laughing about for the next week. Or maybe you, along with our experienced camp staff, choose to climb up the 40-foot Y Tower, soar down the zip-line, join the choreographed dance routine or go for a horseback ride on the trails. By then you’ll want to cool off with a plunge into the refreshing waters of Lake Cole. Day turns to night and the air grows cooler but the crackling campfire keeps you and your cabin-mates warm. You’re making s’mores and telling stories beneath a blanket of stars. New friends feel as comfortable as family. Counselors lead the sing-along. The summer seems perfectly endless. The night does, too. But soon dawn breaks. There’s the flag-raising ceremony, waffles in the dining hall, the sleepy, smiling faces of all your friends, and you get to enjoy another day in the Valley all over again!

ANNUAL GIVING Every child deserves the opportunity to have the summer of a lifetime. Enrolling in a Frost Valley camp program opens up a world of opportunities in leadership, skill building, and appreciation for the natural world.

3 CARING: We go beyond ourselves to do what we can for all.

FROST VALLEY STAFF Frost Valley YMCA is dedicated to hiring only the most qualified and experienced counselors to care for our campers. Many have been with us since they were young, journeying from camper to counselor in training (CiT) to counselor. They know our history, culture, traditions, and terrain as if they have Frost Valley running through their DNA. Others come to us from over a dozen countries around the world. Before being hired, all Frost Valley YMCA staff, including our counselors, are given background and criminal history checks. Counselors undergo extensive training in our policies and procedures, which stress health and safety.

MISSION Frost Valley YMCA is a values-driven organization that fosters youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility through outdoor educational and recreational programs for all.

CAMP WAWAYANDA (GRADES 2-7)

Camp Wawayanda is a traditional overnight camp where, in two-week sessions, children reach new heights of independence, choosing from a wide range of activities based on age, interest, and ability. Campers gain confidence, skills and good friends as they climb the Y-tower, hike to High Falls, kayak across

Lake Cole, and meet new friends and role models from around the world.

CAMP HENRY HIRD (GRADES 8-10)

At Camp Henry Hird, teens come together for two weeks at a time to enjoy a wide range of camp offerings, including extended overnight trips on the trail where they’ll sleep under the stars,

adventure courses like the Giant’s Ladder and Leap of Faith, and big brother/big sister programs. On a daily basis, we witness the transformation from camper to young leader, as teens

exceed their own expectations and become confident, socially responsible stewards of the natural world.

HORSEBACK RIDING LESSONS

(GRADES 2-7) AVAILABLE ALL SESSIONS

Designed for beginning riders of all ages, campers join our experienced and highly qualified instructors for four one-hour

riding blocks, focusing on basic Western horsemanship skills in the arena and out on the trail. Riders work on proper mounting,

dismounting, starting, stopping and steering the horse. These lessons are ONLY available

for campers participating in 2-week Traditional Overnight Camps.

ALL-CAMP EVENTS FOURTH OF JULY (1ST SESSION)

The Fourth of July begins, like all other days, with a flag raising ceremony. But for our Independence Day celebration, the entire camp joins together around the flagpole to sing a rousing happy birthday to America. During the day, campers participate in activities to celebrate this patriotic day. Later, we invite our international summer staff to participate in a Small World Fair, where campers participate in sharing the history and traditions of a variety of cultures. The day culminates with an evening of fireworks over Lake Cole.

OLYMPIX (2ND SESSION)

Every summer, the Olympix spirit sweeps through camp when Frost Valley YMCA hosts our annual Olympix championship. Competing countries vary from year to year and are represented by groups of campers. The opening ceremony commences the night before with dances, skits, and songs representing the cultural traditions of each country. Team unity and pride are on full display, but it’s the spirit of Frost Valley that rises strong and pure. Let the games begin!

BATTLE OF THE THEMES (3RD SESSION)

Hasn’t every kid wanted to be a super hero, wizard or princess? Battle of the Themes is the day where campers chose. After sliming our counselors, our campers voted for this summer’s theme. There will be magic and games run by witches, Wizards, and elves. Camp will be sorted into houses and a quiditch tournament will be played. The possibilities are endless in this camp wide day of imagination and play!

HIRDSTOCK (4TH SESSION)

Hirdstock, a camp-wide music festival inspired by the original Woodstock, takes place during the fourth session. Campers participate in arts and crafts, games, an air guitar competition, and other activities on Hirdstock Field. But, the main attraction is always the music. Performances and musical acts by campers and counselors draw the positive vibes of all present.


9 HONESTY: Being true to yourself and others.

FAQsWHO SUPERVISES MY CHILD?Many of our summer staff members were campers at one time. They became CiTs and then counselors, so they know Frost Valley YMCA better than most. Others joins us from around the world as international staff. Many return year after year, giving Frost Valley a familial environment and a true sense of culture and tradition. Counselors undergo extensive training on our policies and procedures which stress health and safety first. In-depth background and criminal history checks are performed on all of our employees. We follow the American Camp Association standards with providing a 1 to 6 camper to counselor ratio. For younger campers, this ratio is often smaller. To ensure a welcoming and familiar community, 70% of our staff return each summer.

WHAT IF MY CHILD GETS SICK?The Guenther Family Wellness Center, located on camp, is staffed by registered nurses and EMTs 24 hours a day. If your child gets sick, you will be notified immediately while your child receives the care they need. To learn more, email: [email protected]

WHAT WILL MY CHILD EAT?Three hot, wholesome meals are served daily. Our dining hall offers a vast array of options from the typical kid fare to organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options. Care is taken to meet the dietary needs of all of our campers. Fresh fruit is available for snacking all day long. Chartwells Educational Dining Service creates the menus, ensuring that each meal is nutritionally balanced. Candy, juice, and soda are not served nor sold in the Camp Store.

WHERE WILL MY CHILD SLEEP?Camp accommodations vary from single cabins, yurts, and tents to lodges which house two-to-four male or female cabin groups. These arrangements all promise the opportunity for friendships to flourish naturally and with ease, while under the close supervision of counselors and village chiefs. We honor one mutual bunk request per camper.

IS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE?Frost Valley YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign, Project 332, raises money for “camperships” to provide a Frost Valley experience to 500 children who would not otherwise be able to. Tuition A reflects the true cost of camp. Tuitions B & C have been created to help families that require some financial assistance to send their child to summer camp.

I hereby enroll my child in Frost Valley YMCA Summer Camp. In signing this application, I certify that he/she is healthy and free of problems that could adversely affect his/her stay or that of other campers at Frost Valley YMCA.

I agree to pay the balance of camp fees on or before March 31, 2016. I understand that reserved space may not be held past March 31, 2016 without full payment. I understand that on or after September 1, 2016 any outstanding balances are subject to a 1.5% monthly finance charge. REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY: A full refund is available if cancelled by March 31, 2016. A full refund less a $250 deposit (per session, per camper) is available if canceled from April 1 - June 1, 2016. No refunds if canceled after June 1, 2016. I grant permission for the applicant to participate in all planned camp activities. I hereby grant Frost Valley YMCA and its agents full authority to take whatever actions they deem necessary regarding my child’s health and safety, and I fully release Frost Valley YMCA from any liability in connection there within. In the event of an emergency, I understand that prudent attempts will be made to contact the undersigned immediately. I understand that I will be responsible for payment of all medical and medication bills.

I understand that my child must comply with the camp’s rules and standards of conduct and that the organization may terminate my child’s participation in the camp program if he/she does not maintain these standards.

Occasionally Frost Valley YMCA transports campers out of camp to participate in activities. Camp participants may be transported over to the East Valley of Frost Valley’s property and other areas within the Catskill region to enjoy programs. By signing below, I hereby give my permission for my child to be taken off site, supervised, and to take part in programs with the Frost Valley YMCA.

If my child is enrolled for Horseback Riding Lessons or registered for any of the Equestrian Camps, I understand that as with any sport there are inherent risks that can be minimized through preparation and training. Each rider will be required to wear protective attire. This includes long pants to protect the legs, socks, hard smooth-soled shoes with heels (preferably boots), and a properly fitted and secured helmet, provided by the camp.

I understand these risks and release Frost Valley YMCA, and the directors, trustees, officers, volunteers and employees of Frost Valley YMCA, from all liability for damages or injuries resulting from equine activity, negligence or defects in the preparation, instruction, or equipment involved in horseback riding in or around Frost Valley YMCA.

Frost Valley YMCA is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal articles.

I authorize Frost Valley YMCA and the YMCA of the USA to own and have full right of disposition of any video film, footage, sound track recordings and photo reproductions of the camper named on this contract and/or his/her narrative account of his/her experience within YMCA programming. Frost Valley YMCA shall be entitled to the unrestricted use any video film, footage, sound track recordings and photo reproductions of the camper named on this contract and/or his/her narrative account of his/her experience for any purpose without compensation to him/her.

RUTH GOTTSCHO DIALYSIS & CHILDREN’S KIDNEY PROGRAMIn partnership with the Ruth Gottscho Kidney Foundation and Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, campers with chronic kidney disease benefit from the solace of nature and the carefree pleasures of summer camp alongside the wider Frost Valley YMCA community.

Supported by experienced staff and the encouragement of other campers, kidney campers do things they never thought possible. They conquer the Giant Swing, row boats across Lake Cole, scale the climbing tower, enjoy tasty s’mores, make new friends, laugh and be silly, and sleep beneath a canopy of stars.

Frost Valley YMCA provides unparalleled service and medical attention to these young campers. Dialysis treatments take place in the state-of-the-art Guenther Family Wellness Center, overseen by our caring medical staff.

MAINSTREAMING AT CAMP (MAC)In partnership with the Young Adult Institute, Frost Valley YMCA welcomes children with developmental disabilities to join the wider camp community during daily activities. In integrated groups, children experience the joys of play and the abundance of the natural world where no two things are alike. This program benefits both the campers in it and their peers in other villages as children and young adults come to appreciate one another in new ways.

The MAC Program fosters development, independence, and joy in all of the campers who attend Frost Valley.

SUMMER DAY CAMP (Grades Pre-K to 10)Frost Valley YMCA Day Camp provides a magical summer experience to children from the local community who aren’t yet ready for overnight camp. In day camp, they learn Frost Valley’s timeless traditions (all-camp games, gunging the counselors, hoopla) and our eight core values (caring, community, diversity, honesty, inclusiveness, respect, responsibility, stewardship). Daily activities include arts and crafts, sports and games, hiking, climbing, swimming, and soaring on the flying squirrel!

THE TOKYO FROST VALLEY YMCA PARTNERSHIPThe Tokyo-Frost Valley YMCA partnership, a unique global collaboration between our YMCA associations, provides a home base for Japanese families living in America to take respite from the stresses of life in a foreign country. BEAR GRYLLS SURVIVAL ACADEMY TEEN SUMMER PROGRAMS (BOYS & GIRLS AGES 12-17) 5 ONE-WEEK SESSIONS STARTING JULY 10

Imagine you’re lost in the Catskill Mountains. The days are sweltering and the nights are frigid. There’s no cell phone service and no signs of civilization. In a wilderness survival situation, would you have what it takes to make it through the night? Through the week?

Frost Valley YMCA is now home to the world’s first Bear Grylls Survival Academy Summer Camp for teens. This six-day extreme course is led by survival professionals trained by the Bear Grylls Survival Academy. Through their guidance and supervision, campers gain dozens of skills as they’re put to the test in thrilling survival and endurance scenarios such as:

• Foraging for food & learning to set traps• Building fire to cook over & stay warm• Creating shelters to sleep in• Crossing waterways & rough terrain• Carrying out various methods of dynamic self-rescues

This is also the only Frost Valley program to REPEL DOWN HIGH FALLS!

Campers are outfitted in top-of-the-line essentials, so they can experience simulated, yet no less extreme, survival situations in the Catskill wilderness.

While building a strong sense of camaraderie with fellow survivalists, campers explore the natural world around them and take healthy risks that push them beyond their comfort zones. Campers choose their own challenges to ensure they strive to reach individual and cooperative goals.

Frost Valley’s renowned, values-driven summer camp programming is present in every one of these extreme expeditions, all of which take place in a fun and safe outdoor environment.

ADVENTURE VILLAGE (GRADES 5-9) AVAILABLE ALL SESSIONS

Adventure Village is broken into two minivillages, Woodwise (Grades 5-7) and Sequoia (Grades 8 & 9) with the same mission, to help campers become life time lovers of the outdoors! Combining the best of Overnight Camp and Adventure Trips, campers choose their adventure from activities like climbing, all day hikes exploring trails and creek beds, orienteering, ropes courses and outdoor survival skills. Campers in the village will also experience a multi night camping trip.

Adventure Village’s home base is tucked in the woods between two converging mountain creeks with a communal Mongolian Yurt in the center. Campers sleep in bunks in canvas platform tents where they drift off to the soothing sounds of frogs chirping, in the cool mountain air beneath the brilliant starlight.

The Rocks and Ropes climbing trip is an introductory climbing trip for the camper looking to conquer their fears and build skills as a confident climber. Located in the Shawanagunk Mountains, campers learn

climbing knots, belay techniques and more. This is a great first trip for campers looking to reach new heights.

CATSKILL BACKPACKING

This one-week, all-level backpacking trip in our own

Catskill Mountains is a trip for the camper looking to develop skills and themselves. As we

learn map reading, fire building, low-impact camping and much more, campers will also begin to develop leadership qualities and greater self confidence.

PATHFINDER TRIPS

(introductory) WEST VIRGINIA WHITEWATER

(GRADES 8-9) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 2 & 4

Spend two weeks learning the art of whitewater rafting in

the world-renowned New River Gorge. Frost Valley has over 25

years experience running this trip, and it is extremely popular – a

great next step in the Adventure program. Participants will also

experience caving and rock climbing. **Participants must be comfortable in water and know

how to swim**

ALLEGHENY ADVENTURER (GRADES 8-9) AVAILABLE

SESSIONS 1 & 3

The Allegheny Adventurer for the camper looking to slow down and enjoy an incredibly serene forest barely altered by man. This trip

exploring the only National Forest in Pennsylvania is perfect for

backpackers looking to disconnect from society and get in touch with themselves, nature, and

new friends. Come join us for this life-changing experience.

EXPLORER TRIPS (basic) ADIRONDACK HIKE AND CLIMB

(GRADES 7-8) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 2 & 4

The Adirondack Hike and Climb trip is an introductory trip for the adventurer at heart.

Campers learn backcountry skills like orienteering, fire building and low-impact camping. Campers will also test their limits and find the value of teamwork while hiking and climbing some of the highest peaks

in New York.

ADIRONDACK PADDLER (GRADES 7-8) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 1 & 3

The Adirondack Paddler is for the water-loving adventurer looking to develop their paddling skills

and themselves. From paddling small streams, to large lakes, to whitewater this trip offers

opportunities to build confidence and leadership in addition to mastering paddling. **Participants must be comfortable in water and know how to swim**

MAINE COAST (GRADES 7-8) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 2, 3 & 4

This trip in Acadia National Park is for the explorer interested in the challenge of climbing, hiking,

and paddling. Join us as we climb the Otter Cliffs, hike the highest peaks in Acadia, and kayak along

coastal islands all with Certified Maine guides. While exploring the coastal islands campers will get the unique experience of camping on these incredibly beautiful islands. This trip offers a little bit of everything. **Participants must be comfortable in water and know how to swim**

ADIRONDACK MOUNTAIN SUMMIT

MULTI-PITCH (GRADES 9-12)

The most advanced wilderness trip,

Adirondack Mountain Summit Multi-pitch is

nothing short of amazing. Campers summit the most

beautiful and highest peaks in the Adirondacks and climb the highest cliff

face on the east coast. They spend thirteen days backpacking

before spending five days of climbing. The

climbing section provides hands-on learning in setting up gear,

scouting climbs, and climbing safety. This trip

emphasizes becoming responsible outdoor

enthusiasts for life.

SERVICE TRIPS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY (AGE 16+) AVAILABLE SESSION 3

This trip is for campers who want to impact homelessness and make a difference helping Habitat for Humanity with everyday tasks that raise money to rebuild the local community here in the Catskills. Campers work with Habitat for Humanity to gain experience, make new friends, acquire new skills, and give back while earning 35 hours of community service. This trip isn’t all work though; campers will also enjoy the beauty of the Catskill

Mountains by climbing in the nearby Mohonk Preserve.

MAINE TRAIL BUILDERS (GRADES 9-12) AVAILABLE SESSION 2

Maine Trail Builders is for the adventurous camper who also wants to make a difference. On this trip campers explore the

beautiful area of Acadia, Maine, as they help maintain trails and complete service work with the National Park Service. Digging

in the dirt, trimming trees and completing various projects around the park, they earn up to 35 hours of community

service. On days off, climb cliffs above the ocean and hike the highest peaks with the best vistas in the National Park.

CATSKILL TRAIL BUILDERS (GRADES 9-12) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 1 & 4

Join us in the Forever Wild Catskill Mountains as we help maintain our trails and complete service work for our local community. Campers will learn all about trail building and

gain knowledge and skills in digging water trenches, clearing overgrown brush, creating vista points, and doing other

projects on the nearby trails. Campers will earn up to 35 hours of community service. On days off, we explore the best vistas

in the area and visit local fire towers.


HORSE CAMPS“Horse Camp is a place where

everyone is accepted and embraced for who they are and everyone has a

MUSTANG VILLAGE GIRLS ONLY (GRADES 2-5, AGES 7-10)

AVAILABLE ALL SESSIONS

Mustang Village, located on main camp, is designed for young girls who want to live the life of an equestrian,

but also participate in traditional camp activities. A great experience for first-time campers, Mustang Village is

designed for girls with little or no riding experience; however, all riding levels are accepted. Campers spend half of each day

learning the basics of horsemanship and developing riding skills, both in the saddle (for at least an hour) as well as on the ground learning about horses and their care. The rest of the day, girls enjoy Frost Valley summer camp favorites: swimming, hiking, rock climbing, making arts and crafts, playing sports, and much more. Girls live in a lodge with

counselors who have exceptional skills with both horses and campers. Riders are grouped according to skill and assigned their own horse for the whole session. For more information

Frost Valley YMCA’s equestrian staff is dedicated to providing the opportunity for riders to develop confidence and leadership skills while learning the fundamentals of riding and horse care. All of Frost Valley’s horse programs are designed to give campers at all levels of horseback riding the chance to increase confidence in their abilities and gain new skills in western riding. Our horse camps feature experienced staff from all over the world, over eighty well-trained and experienced horses, and two renowned equestrian facilities. Our programs are accredited by the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) and uphold the highest safety and educational standards.

NEW!DURANGO VILLAGE

BOYS ONLY (GRADES 3-7, AGES 8-12) AVAILABLE SESSION 4 ONLY

Durango Village at Main Camp is designed for boys ages 8-12 who want to gain horseback riding skills, but still participate in traditional

camp activities. Campers share a cabin and are paired with their own horse throughout the course of the session. Half the day is spent learning the basics of horse care and riding technique, while the remainder of the day is

devoted to a wide range of other camp activities including swimming, climbing, hiking, and more. They’ll even enjoy an overnight camping trip to

the barn! This program offers a great experience for boys with basic riding experience, although all riding levels are accepted. For more information

2-WEEK EAST VALLEY RANCH

PROGRAM GIRLS ONLY (GRADES 5 & UP, MIN. AGE 10)


East Valley Ranch campers learn wrangling, feeding, grooming, tacking, and cleaning, and each camper has personal responsibility for her horse throughout the session. Each day,

the girls spend an hour to an hour and a half in the saddle, focusing on their riding technique during ring lessons and trail rides. They’ll also learn about veterinary care, proper nutrition, and horse training skills. Another portion of each day is spent hiking, playing sports or

games, and making arts and crafts. Campers will enjoy swimming several times each week,

and a special East Valley Ranch event designed just for them! Girls grow leaps and bounds during this program, gaining confidence, centeredness, and a growing respect and

compassion for other beings.

4-WEEK EAST VALLEY RANCH

PROGRAM GIRLS ONLY (GRADES 7-11, AGE 12-16)

AVAILABLE DATES: JUNE 26-JULY 22 & JULY 24-AUG 19

Register early, space is limited.

Campers in this program must have attended EVR before and be approved by the Director. For experienced riders,

this month-long adventure provides new challenges and opportunities to perfect your riding techniques. Girls spend two to three hours each day in the saddle, and have the opportunity to achieve new milestones with their riding abilities. Throughout the month they will design and practice their own drill team, which is performed for the 2-week

campers. In addition they will learn how to assist an instructor, how to school a horse, and

about horse health and care. This program, which also included an overnight camping trip, helps build outstanding and experienced young

female leaders.

EAST VALLEY RANCHLocated just one mile from Farm Camp, East Valley Ranch

is set in a picturesque location dedicated to providing girls with an exceptional experience working with horses and enjoying summer camp. This program is designed for

girls with all levels of horse experience and our highly knowledgeable and passionate staff are eager to help them

develop confidence in their abilities. East Valley Ranch campers sleep in rustic yurts arranged by age, and enjoy

their own private dining hall, and a variety of program areas.


FARM CAMP (GRADES 2-10)


Farm Camp is a working farm set on 515 acres, with a barn full of animals and a colorful garden, both of which are tended to daily by our campers. Here, children learn

to care for all kinds of animals and cultivate and harvest the garden. At farm camp, children learn on a deep level what it means to live a healthy life, by eating the very

foods they’ve grown, and how important it is to be stewards of the earth.

Frost Valley Farm Camp’s rustic yurts are arranged by age and gender, and campers spend their days integrated as a whole group. This gives campers of all ages the

chance to learn from one another, mentor others, and develop skills at their own pace.

Campers also enjoy the simple pleasures of summer camp: swimming, boating, playing games and sports, making arts and crafts, and bonding with friends over the campfire. Farm Camp sows the seeds of our core values: Caring, Community, Diversity, Honesty,

Inclusiveness, Respect, Responsibility, and Stewardship.

TRADITIONAL CAMP ACTIVITIES

Swimming in the lake, boating and kayaking, arts and crafts, archery, sports and games, dancing, hiking, dam building, outdoor living skills, tetherball, carpet ball, singing, campfires, painting murals, putting on skits, making music, camping out under the stars, playing capture the flag, teambuilding, studying ecology and nature, creative writing, playing improv games, visiting the library and reading, and more!

FARM ACTIVITIES

Learn about the care of a variety of livestock including goats, sheep, alpacas, chicken, pigs, cows, and rabbits. Pick berries, learn where your food comes from, harvest, prepare, cook, pickle, make jams, compost, plant, save seeds, be a steward of our 3 acre garden space, and don’t forget your appetite for homegrown, healthy foods. Collect eggs, milk goats, muck stalls, harvest veggies, and enjoy family-style meals. Learn blacksmithing, wool arts, sheep shearing, candle making, soap making, yogurt and cheese making, and cooking in the kitchen.
