Balance lies at the heart of Cataldi Madonna’s vineyard and winery philosophies. The focus in the vineyard is on achieving equilibrium in the vine in order to best express the characteristics of the territory, rather than achieving a specific yield. This approach is continued in the winery, where alltechniques are oriented to preserve the grit, freshness and distinct flavors of the grapes as they naturally occur. Since 2003, Lorenzo Landi has consulted with Cataldi Madonna’s agronomist and winemaker, Raffaele Orlandini, in order to achieve to ever increasing levels of quality in the wines, showcasing the potential the Alto Tirino through its native varietals: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano, and Pecorino.
Located in the “oven of Abruzzo,” Cataldi Madonna resides in Ofena, a kind of amphitheater at the foot of the only Appenine glacier on Calderone in the Gran Sasso mountain range. Sitting at an elevation well over 1,000 feet, Cataldi Madonna’s location is a unique intersection of natural gifts which causes significant fluctuation in day and night temperatures, critical to the development of the grapes. Luigi Cataldi Madonna, a professor of philosophy at the renowned Universita` dell’Aquila, has
employed his profile as a great academic to explore and enhance the traditional image of his region’s wines, inspiring his fellow producers to create a modern-day renaissance in the region’s wines. In this context, Cataldi Madonna has made their signature rich, modern wines that are an intelligent expression of great drinkability.
Cataldi Madonna produces wines from the native Abruzzese grapes Montepulciano, Pecorino, and Trebbiano. Five of these wines are available in the United States:
• Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC• Cerasuolo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC• Cataldi Madonna Malandrino Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC• Cataldi Madonna Tonì Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC• Giulia Pecorino Terre Acquilane IGT
The name Pecorino means “little sheep” and is perhaps more widely associated with Pecorino cheese, which is made from ewes’ milk and is entirely unrelated, save for its etymological link. The grape is so called supposedly because it was a favorite treat for flocks of sheep driven to lower pastures. Pecorino cheese is, coincidentally, a surprisingly good food match for Pecorino wine.

Founded in 1920, Cataldi Madonna has been carried forward by three generations of the family. Consisting of just over 65 acres, the estate is home to Abruzzo’s native varietal range and has been bottling its own wines since 1975.

In 1990 I went to Rauscedo to taste a micro–vinified Pecorino, a grape variety that had been rediscovered 7 years earlier by my friend and agronomist Vincenzo Aquilano in an 80 year-old vineyard located in Vittorino, a village 20 km away from my hometown of Ofena. At the time, I was looking for an alternative to the most popular grape in Abruzzo, Trebbiano, and I was intrigued by this discovery. It was love at first sight! Firstly, because of the characteristics of the wine, with its
unexpected explosion of acidity and secondly, because I fell in love with the name; so evocative and unique. I immediately took action toward obtaining an IGT appellation which allowed the name on the label, and soon, the IGT “Alto Tirino,” was born. Today it is incorporated in the larger “Terre Aquilane,” IGT (which is still not so crowded). In 1996, I bottled the first Pecorino wine in Italian wine history. For me, at the
time, the name Pecorino was a form of protest against the
excessive elitism of wine, which was causing the estrangement of
young people and other potential consumers.
Frontone Pecorino comes from the first Pecorino vineyard that I planted in 1990.
The extension is of 8,000 mq (0,8 Ha) with 1,800 vines. After the first agronomical misadventures, due mostly to my ignorance of the grape, I was able to bottle the vintage 1996 (2,000 bts) with 9 g/L acidity, a pretty nice feature for the people who like lemon soda like me, but it was definitely not for everybody. It was a new, sharp, “alien,” wine, in a time when the most fashionable wines were smooth and round. The swing of judgements made me uncertain and I began to experiment with different winemaking and vineyard management
techniques, such as late harvest, fermentation in oak barrels, and malolactic fermentation. With no success, my doubts about
the grape variety increased. For the 2005 vintage, together with
oenologist Lorenzo Landi, we began working with the grape operating on two assumptions (that later proved to be valid): one, that Pecorino is an aromatic grape variety, but its aromas tend to volatize quickly; and two, Pecorino is genetically acidic. If you don’t respect these characteristics, you can produce a good wine, but not a true Pecorino. Trying to reduce its natural acidity means to trasform it. Pecorino, because of
its “shameless” acidity, has become the symbol of a new wine trend: freshness vs. richness. We aimed for this result starting from the work in the vineyards, and with a reductive vinification.
In 2007, with the availability of Pecorino grapes from newer vineyards, we could once again begin to produce a Pecorino wine using fruit from the original vineyard planted in 1990. We also did this in 2008 and 2009, and soon realized that the Frontone Pecorino was superior to the Pecorino from the new vineyards, so we decided to start producing it regularly again. In the following vintages, other incidents, such as spring frost and an earthquake, delayed the project. In 2016 we finally released our Frontone 2013. In 2010, using grapes from our newer vineyards, I produced a new Pecorino called “Giulia,” to celebrate the 18th birthday of my daughter. The winemaking style is the same as for Frontone, but the yield per hectare is slightly higher, and as opposed to the natural longevity of Pecorino, it is conceived as a fresh wine to be enjoyed while young. It’s like the difference between an adult and a young person: Frontone is wise, composed and serious, while Giulia is impetuous, restless, and joyful.
This is the story of Pecorino for now, but it is not over, Giulia and I promise there will be more surprises. The next vintage, 2017, will be presented at Vinitaly in 2019.

Aneri was created through the expertise of Giancarlo Aneri, known by some as the “prince of wine marketing,” with extensive experience in the industry of over 20 years. In 1998, Giancarlo decided to create his own brand. The story of Aneri started out by choosing one product, Prosecco; a versatile, fruity, fresh and sparkling wine that is distinctively. Nowadays, Aneri controls the production of three vine farms that produce Prosecco grapes at the highest level of quality. They were honored to have their Prosecco served at the Juventus F. C. 100 Years Celebration, the election celebrations of Presidents of the Italian Republic Ciampi and Napolitano, and United States President Barack Obama. From the precursor Prosecco, the range of Aneri wines has grown over time and now includes Amarone Stella, a special wine given as a gift by Italy’s former Prime Minister to all 25
of Europe’s Prime Ministers at the European Union Constitution signing in Rome in 2004; as well as the Great Eight of the Earth during the G8 Summit held in L’Aquila in 2009. These wines have been appreciated by Président Sarkozy, President Bush and Prime Minister Cameron; they are served regularly at Palazzo Chigi, and Quirinale. They can be found worldwide at many prestigious and fashionable locations, such as the Four Seasons in New York City, Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Starwood’s Luxury Hotels, Orient Express Hotels, Sir Rocco Forte Hotels, Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, L’ Anima Restaurant in London, Cipriani in Montecarlo, Le Stresa in Paris, San Pietro in New York and Ristorante Cracco in Milan, just to name a few. Aneri’s philosophy is to produce only premium quality wines in limited quantities respecting the tradition of the land, the vines,
and of good living.
