Issue 514 Summer Term

Year 2 started the new term with a visit from Mrs Forsyth who works for Action Aid. On Tuesday morning she gave the year group an interesting introduction to our new topic on Kenya, with a slide show and talk on her fascinating travels and personal experience of the country. In the afternoon, each class enjoyed a hands-on session, where we dressed up in Kenyan clothes, handled some wonderful artefacts and even played Kenyan instruments. Football v The Elms

SPORTS REPORTS

Wednesday 28th March saw the final football game of the season as we welcomed The Elms, renowned for being

strong at football.

The early stages of the game were nip and tuck, with most of the action in the middle of the field and chances few

and far between. The Elms, however, finally made a break-through after a mix up at the back.

The second half was very much the same as the first, chances went begging for Fairfield, a couple just the wrong

side of the post, and even one surprisingly hitting the keeper in the face. Again, The Elms made the most of their

chance, bagging a second goal.

Final score; Fairfield 0-2 The Elms.

Congratulations on a fantastic season boys, I am extremely proud!

Mr Rennie.

U11 In2Hockey Regional Finals Cannock

SPORTS REPORTS

On Friday 20th April, Fairfield U11 boys Hockey team represented Leicestershire in the Midlands In2Hockey Championship at Cannock. Fairfield were in a pool of six other schools and their results were as follows:

Fairfield 0 RGS Worcester 1

Fairfield 1 Linby and Papplewick 0

Fairfield 0 Bilton Grange 1

Fairfield 0 Abbotsholme 1

Fairfield 1 Spratton Hall 1

All games were incredibly tight with few chances being created at both ends. Fairfield were unlucky not to have achieved more favourable results but they were placed in the most difficult pool with both Bilton Grange and RGS Worcester going on to contest the final. Their final match was against St Peter’s who had finished 4th in the second pool. The result was 1 – 0 to St Peter’s.

Well done to all those who played and also to all those pupils who have represented the school throughout the term. Mr Pitts.

Despite still being on their Easter holidays and looking well relaxed, the girls arrived at the tournament with plenty of energy and enthusiasm. Drawn in a pool of seven teams from across the Midlands, it was evident that the girls were going to need to work hard and with good teamwork to ensure they progressed into the Semi-Finals. They got off to a terrific start against Abbotsholme and secured a well deserved 4-0 win. With confidence levels raised, they then played a more competitive game against Croft and despite taking a little while to get going ran out 3-0 to the good. The third game against Linby and Papplewick allowed the girls to work in a variety of positions whilst still maintaining their shape and their efforts were justly rewarded with an excellent 6-0 victory. With their confidence ever growing, the girls now played Shrewsbury School who offered little in the way of attack and allowed our girls to penetrate the D on numerous occasions to give a score line of 3-0 to Fairfield. With no goals yet conceded and sixteen scored, the girls’ mood was buoyant and with only two pool matches left looked to be well placed. However, their last two games were against two strong schools, namely RGS Grange and Spratton Hall. The girls had played RGS in the IAPS competition earlier in the year so they were prepared for a hard game. Despite numerous attempts and continuous pressure on their defence, the girls could not get the ball in the net and on the only occasion that RGS got into the Fairfield D they took their chance and scored, giving them the 1-0 win. Undeterred and focused, the team then faced Spratton Hall who proved to be the strongest team of the day. We had limited attacking chances and were well marked by the opposition who pressed our players well to overturn possession. Sadly the girls could not turn the game around and lost 1-0 to a well taken goal. Although the girls had scored more goals and conceded less than any other team in the group, they were just two points short of qualifying as a result of the last two games and it was Spratton and RGS who went through. Although we all felt a little deflated at not progressing to the Semi-Finals, the girls should feel justifiably proud of their performance. They played some excellent hockey and worked hard for each other, never letting their heads drop and giving plenty of encouragement. They have been a delight to coach this year and I wish them all the very best for their hockey yet to come. A word of appreciation too to all the wonderful parents who gave up their time to give the girls such wonderful support. Mrs Sutcliffe.

The U10 girls were a little doubtful that the rounders game would be played due to the weather. However, Wednesday afternoon turned out to be quite sunny. We had one very wet rounders practice before this game and the girls demonstrated just how much potential they have. It was a lovely way to start the rounders season with a fixture against Foremarke. The fielders showed promise, making several catches in the outfield from some big hits. They were also fantastic at backing up on a backwards hit. The girls enjoyed having a 30 ball innings giving them an opportunity to practise their batting and ball placement. It was an enjoyable afternoon. Well done girls!

Mrs Lewis and Mr Wilson.

Rounders v Foremarke Hall

SPORTS REPORTS

The U11 Rounders season got off to a great start against Foremarke Hall on Wednesday. Despite scattered showers and some doubts over the match going ahead we managed to play, even with some patches of sunshine! Both teams displayed some good periods of fielding and made good contact with the ball. They should be commended on their teamwork and the lovely atmos-phere in which the game was played. A fantastic start to the season with both teams recording victories. Well done and thank you to Mrs Love for coaching and umpiring.

Mrs Webster.

SPORTS REPORTS

Cricket v Oakham

On Wednesday 25th April, the U11 ‘A’ team played Oakham away. Once the rain, thunder and lightning had cleared, we took to the field. The boys bowled and fielded very well for their first match. However, the catching is something we need to work on. It was then our turn to bat and because of some needless run outs, we came up well short of our target. I look forward to next week to take on Spratton Hall. Well played boys!

Mr Young.

On Wednesday 25th April, Fairfield U11 ‘B’ team played away at Oakham School. Despite the thunder and lightning a break in the weather meant we managed to complete all but two of the allocated overs. Fairfield batted first in pairs for four overs each with runs being scored off the bat. Oakham bowled a consistent line and length and this restricted Fairfield to a modest total of 265. Fairfield were not as consistent in line and length when they bowled. Oakham had a couple of big hitters and this resulted in them attaining a total of 327.

Fairfield were against boys that were up to two years older than them and this was shown by their additional game understanding and strength.

Well played everyone. We must now work hard in practice to improve our fielding and our ability to remain focussed for the duration of the innings.

Mr Pitts.

The thunder and lightning took centre stage for the first half an hour of the U10s first cricket match of the season against Oakham on Wednesday. Luckily, this was short lived and the boys managed to get a full game – many thanks to the Oakham ground staff for managing the ground!

The boys bowled first in a pairs cricket version of the game, allowing everyone to bowl and bat equally. There was definitely some first game inconsistency amongst the bowling. However, as the game went on, everyone improved and bowled really well. The most impressive thing shown by the Year 5 boys was the fielding, some excellent diving stops and 2 direct hit run outs! Oakham managed a score of 318 (starting on 200).

Next was the batting; against a more experienced side the boys found it tricky. Having said that, they didn’t give their wicket away easily and stuck at the task well, amounting a respectable 245 from their overs.

Lots to work on in all areas. Well done boys, an excellent start to the season!

Mr Rennie.

You should have now received the proofs of the Winter Team Photographs via your child. If you wish to order a photograph, then please do so directly with Gillman and Soame by Tuesday 1st May. Otherwise, you may incur a late charge.

We have had some very interesting photos of children with sculptures they have seen over the holidays. It is

not too late to bring in a photo to your class teachers or email them to [email protected].

If you got creative with natural materials on the beach or in the woods, we would love to see a photo of what

you made.

Upper Prep

Years 3 – 6 can still bring sculptures they have made to the Art room in the mornings. Method and materials

their choice, but it should be their own work.

Look out for all the photos on Firefly!

A huge well done to Mr Sheikh who ran the London Marathon last weekend in an amazing time of 3:34:46, despite the heat-wave! In total he has raised the magnificent sum of £5,814.43, which he couldn’t have done without lots of help from everyone at Fairfield

Well done Mr Sheikh!

Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets for the Easter Egg Raffle. It was a fantastic success as always and we raised a total of £463.11 for Rainbows Children’s Hospice. This year, we had extra super prizes due to the very kind and generous donations from Rio Dasani in Year 3.
