This seminar is designed for health professionals who work with clients wishing to enhance their performance in avo-cational or professional sports, the performing arts, or their daily work and to enhance patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, and communication skills. Learners have a lack of skill in identifying states of performing excel-lence and the factors that contribute to the development of performance. Both in the own performance and in clients/patients wishing to improve performance excellence, in sports and in the worksite and the arts. Participants will learn a variety of psychological methods used in sports psychology as well as body/mind training techniques drawn from the meditation traditions. We will review biological, psychologi-cal and socio-cultural factors, which improve peak perfor-mance. The main emphasis will be on learning a variety of peak performance interventions: 1) psychodynamic, cogni-tive behavioral and hypnotic methods for eradicating factors which hinder peak performance. 2) body/mind training methods such as physical conditioning methods, concentra-tion training, awareness training, and techniques for cutting off scattered thought. The educational presentation will include lecturing, demonstration of methods, practice, case presentation and Q & A. Case presentations will be drawn for recreational and professional sports, dance and music performance, and managerial worksite training. This semi-nar is designed to develop competence in implementing the following interventions: concentration training, maintaining concentration during distracting conditions, visualizing and refining peak performance, developing the optimal level for peak performance, identifying cognitive and affective factors that interfere with peak performance and developing effec-tive coping strategies for correcting these; identifying and developing goals that consistently challenge the individual to maintain peak performance states.

Contemporary Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: An Integrative Approach

MarthaStark,MDJuly 6-8, 2012 • Friday - Sunday

Dr. Martha Stark has developed a comprehensive theory of therapeutic action that integrates the interpretive perspective of classical psychoanalysis (which speaks to the power of insight); the corrective-provision perspective of self psychology and other deficit theories (which speaks to the importance of corrective experience as compensation for early-on deficiencies); and the contemporary relational perspective (which speaks to mutual enactment and negotiation by both patient and therapist of the entanglements that will inevitably emerge at the intimate edge of their authentic engagement). For many psycho-therapists a gap exists between their knowledge about psychodynamic therapy and their feelings of competence in how they perform it. The therapists that attend the course sometimes intuitively know what to do but can’t begin to put the words to it, theoretically, as to what they’re doing. People are longing to formulate their stance. Dr. Stark focus throughout the seminar will be on the interface between theory and practice; and Dr. Stark will demonstrate, by way of numerous clinical vignettes and prototypical interventions, the ways in which the three modes of therapeutic action (knowledge, experience, and relationship) can be used to accelerate the healing process.

Educational presentation will be in seminar format and include lectures, participant discussions and Q & A.

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:• Examinethetherapist’s“useofself”toinformboth

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy: A Clinical Update

RobertGoisman,MDJuly 30-August 3, 2012 • Monday - Friday

The influence of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is widening as the importance of cost-effective, empirically validated, shorter-term treatment increases. From its beginnings as a treatment for specific phobias, CBT is now indicated for a wide range of mood and anxiety disorders. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a highly effective and very popular form of cognitive-behavioral treatment for patients with borderline personality disorder. Newest on the scene is the application of CBT to the treatment of psychotic symptoms. Topics to be covered will include a brief review of the development of behavioral and cognitive treatments; anxiety disorders, including panic, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder; mood disorders; DBT; and social skills training for schizophrenia. We will include a discussion of CBT for bipolar disorder and also discuss new applications of cognitive therapy to the treatment of delusions and hallucinations. We will in part utilize a case presentation format, in which a typical case will be presented at the beginning of each session and then later discussed using the principles developed that

morning. Live role-playing exercises will also be used in order to illustrate the application of social skills training principles. Participants will be invited to present their own cases for cognitive-behavioral consultation.

Many clinicians received their training in psychotherapy before the advent and/or popularity of CBT. These clini-cians have found that the climate of the mental health field has changed and there is a greater requirement for the prescribing of evidence-based practice. For those cli-nicians who have not been trained in CBT, acquisition of these skills has become very important. This seminar will be helpful to clinicians with no experience in CBT and DBT, as well as clinicians with a knowledge base in these areas. The seminar is an evolution of prior such courses and should prove helpful to past participants.

New Innovations For the Treatment of ADHD and Psychological Brain Health

JohnRatey,MDJuly 30-August 3, 2012 • Monday - Friday

This seminar will focus on specific approaches and interventions to patients with ADHD, Aggression and Mood, the Addictions, and Social disorders. Treatment issues will be emphasized and we will explore new

medications and alternative strategies that are shown to be effective in these psychiatric problems. We will take brief journeys into the brain and at the synapse to help understand what conditions we are aiming to change and why. We will discuss the use of combination of treatments, both medical and non-medical. We will study controversies of diagnosis: 1. Bipolar or ADHD or both and what this means for treatment; 2. Asperger’s or Autism or Social Dyslexia – does it matter and are there any relevant medications and behavioral interventions for these developmental differences; 3. Relevancies of DSM-IV-TR to the real world and the issue of subthreshold diagnoses of the “Shadow Syndromes” and 4. The effect of exercise and other environmental factors on the brain and psyche. This seminar will address current gaps in knowledge and competence with regard to specific approaches and interventions to patients with ADHD, Aggression and Mood, the Addictions, and Social disorders. Mind/Body Medicine: Components, Research, Techniques and Applications with the Emphasis

on the Relaxation Response HerbertBenson,MDandAnnWebster,PhD

August 6-10, 2012 • Monday - Friday

Health care is changing. The new model, often referred to as mind/body medicine, states clearly that the causes, development and outcomes of an illness are determined by the interaction of biochemistry and physiology with psychological, social and cultural factors. Recent data establish that the relaxation response beneficially alters genomic changes. Yet most health care providers do not communicate with their patients about these issues nor do they understand mind/body medicine interventions.

This seminar, which will be both didactic and experien-tial, will focus on understanding the foundation of mind/body medicine, the role of stress in illness, recent research advances, and techniques and applications of mind/body medicine. Learners will come to understand how the causes, development and outcomes of an illness are deter-mined by the interaction of biochemistry and physiology with psychological, social and cultural factors. Meditation and Mindfulness in Clinical Practice: Enhancing Treatment Effectiveness

and Personal WellbeingChristopherGermer,PhD

August 27-31, 2012 • Monday - Friday

Meditation is currently one of the most widely researched treatment methods. Mindfulness, in particular, has been shown to change the structure and function of the brain within 8 weeks of daily practice, and the benefits extend from alleviation of a wide array of mental and physical disorders to enhancing the wellbeing of clinicians and cultivating positive attitudes associated with patient care.

But what is meditation exactly? What is mindfulness? How do we integrate meditation into psychotherapy, especially in the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, and couples therapy? What scientific evidence supports its use and what are the contraindications? This program is an up-to-date review of the theory and practice of meditation from the Buddha to modern brain science and psychotherapy. Participants with no meditation experience, as well as seasoned practitioners, will find this course helpful in their clinical work.

The purpose of this seminar is to offer the partici-pants an up-to-date review of the theory, research, and practice of meditation in health care (especially as it applies to the practice of psychotherapy), to increase the effectiveness of behavioral treatment, to enhance the wellbeing of clinicians, and cultivate positive attitudes associated with patient care. This seminar is designed to enhance patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, and communication skills. Educational presentation will be in seminar format, include lectures, participant discussions and Q & A.

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:• Identifythethreemainformsofmeditation--

The Psychology of Investing in 2012JohnSchott,MD

August 27-31, 2012 • Monday - Friday

This seminar studies the development of behavioral finance from its infancy shown in the 17th century tulip mania through current research in neurofinance. The first day is a workshop examining the origins of the participant’s personal attitudes toward money. In-depth looks are made into historical market manias, herd mentality, the development of investment heuristics, investment psychology research and neurofinance. The role of money in transference and countertransference is also discussed. The seminar also explores the psychology of the market as opposed to the emotions of individual investors.

This seminar will address the gaps in clinician knowledge and psychotherapy skills pertaining to the symbolic nature of money and the payment of fees. It will help clinicians understand communications from patients regarding conflicts about money, power, and self-worth that are disguised as money issues. This seminar has been designed to enhance patient care, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills and professionalism. Educational presentation will be in seminar format and include lectures, participant discussions and Q & A. There is ample opportunity for attendees to discuss their own clinical experiences.
