In a special way, the events of the final weeks of the school year bring into clear focus the proud accomplish-ments of our students. The spring concerts, field days, picnics, awards programs, moving-up ceremonies, and high school commencement all provide glimpses into what makes our District special. It is a time when the talents, dreams, ambitions and aspirations of all stu-dents come to the fore.
These sentiments were echoed in my remarks to 8th graders at their Moving-Up Ceremony and to our gradu-ating seniors at High School Commencement. Middle school graduates were asked to set their sights and goals high as they faced new opportunities and chal-lenges of high school. This quote from entrepreneur and author, Jim Rohn, was referenced:
Let others lead small lives, but not you.Let others argue over small things, but not you.Let others cry over small hurts, but not you.Let others leave their future in someone else’s hands, but not you.
To the graduates of Eastchester High School, I noted in their accomplishments as high school students a magnificent capacity for the extraordinary. Employing the words of American author, Jean Houston – “We all have the extraordinary coded within us, waiting to be released,” – I urged them to find it; release it in them-selves; and then release it in others. As they move beyond the familiar boundaries of Eastchester, to dare to be extraordinary. We wish our graduates well, con-fident that they will bring the very best of Eastchester with them in their new adventures.
Summer provides a welcome and necessary time for reflection, rest and regeneration. I hope that you and your family will have an opportunity to enjoy many spe-cial moments during these months of July and August.
To all returning students, staff and families, we look forward to another great school year. Thank you for the privilege of serving as superintendent in this wonderful community.

Eastchester Relay for Life Night Raises Over $30,000At this year’s Relay for Life, a community based fundrais-ing event of the American Cancer Society, over 130 Eastchester High School students raised more than $30,000. The top five fundraisers were Lindsey Moy ($6,050), Joanne Georgiou ($1,675), Zach Shearon ($1,630), Sedona Paykin ($740) and Ralph Medici ($620). Advisor Lina Astarita thanked all those who made the night possible, noting that Jamie Sokol (Co-President of Habitat) went beyond her duties to ensure that this year would be successful.
Holocaust Survivor Addresses EMS Students At the suggestion of then 8th grader Jenna Ginsburg, EMS hosted a Holocaust survivor as part of the 8th grade ELA and Social Studies collaborative unit on World War II and the Holocaust. Jack Trompetter, a lively narrator, told the story of how he was one of the “hidden children” sent to live with others during the escalation of the war and anti-Jewish sentiment in Europe, stressing that talking about his experiences keeps alive the stories and memo-ries of those who suffered or perished during this dark period of history.
Dancing with Our Stars and Cupcake WarsThe tenth annual Dancing with Our Stars and the sixth annual Cupcake Wars raised $19,000. The proceeds benefit Gilda’s Club of Westchester and the Sopho-more Class. The complete listing of the winners can be found on the district web site.

EHS Student Wins “Chester” for Best FilmEHS film students made a strong showing at the West-chester County Future Filmmakers Festival at the Pelham Picture House. 2016 graduate Bobby Martin took first place, winning the “Chester” for best film for his companion films, A Guy’s Guide to Getting Girls - Every Guy Needs a Little Help to Find That Special Someone and A Girl’s Guide to Getting Guys - Every Girl Needs a Little Help to Find That Special Someone. The follow-ing students also had their films screened at the annual event: Daniel Cho, Ryan Gray, Brandon Marku, Kyle McKintyre, Jack Murtha, Keisuke Nojima, Jose Sala, and Kevin Wingertzahn.
Cherry Tree Dedication The bonds of friendship between Japan and the United States were celebrated locally with a sakura cherry tree planting ceremony at Eastchester High School. East-chester parent Mrs. Chiaki Umemoto initiated a drive to raise money for the purchase of sakura cherry trees and plaques for each of the 5 Eastchester schools. Sakura trees are widely celebrated in Japanese literature, poetry, and art and the cherry blossoms are viewed as living symbols of friendship.
Generous donations by the Japanese PTA, the Eliza Scidmore Cherry Blossom Society and the Eastchester School Foundation made the project possible.
The keynote address was given by Mr. Koji Abe, Deputy Consul-General of Japan. EHS and EMS students, directed by Don Olsen, played the American and Japa-nese national anthems. Refreshments were provided by the High School PTA.
The Eastchester Music Boosters hosted a Career in the Arts event in June– the first district event focused solely an arts careers. The Music Boosters invited Eastchester alumni who work or are studying in the arts, to speak about their career path, challenges and advice to current Eastchester students. Waverly Wins GrantsSixteen Waverly kindergarten and first grade teaches were awarded grants, ranging from $100-$500 by the Teacher Center of Central Westchester. Many of the grants will support a program entitled A Google Garden in Kindergarten.

Volunteer Medal AwardedYun (Jacob) Hur, EMS 2016, has been awarded the President’s Volunteer Bronze Service Award by Corporations for National and Community Service. He has been playing the cello since he was in 3rd grade, often visiting nursing homes to play for the elderly. He is also a member of the New York Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Two new elementary principals will be joining the ranks of Eastchester administrators, beginning in July, 2016. Mari Doyle, who has been an ESL/ENL (English as a Second or New Language) teacher at Waverly for the past 13 years will replace Dr. Jeff Melendez as Waverly principal.
Annette Keane, Ph.D., will become the new Anne Hutchin-son principal, taking over for Theresa Cherry, who has retired. Water ReportThe District has received the results of testing conducted to determine levels of lead in water. The District followed EPA pro-tocols and employed the services of an outside consulting firm, Regulatory Compliance, to test all sources of water, district wide. Most water fountains primarily used by students and staff have had filters for many years and did not indicate any need for action.
The District is now in the process of remediating any remaining sources of water with actionable lead content levels. Buddy BenchA fundraiser has been started to honor the spirit of Greenvale second grade student Lily Love with a project that embodies Lily’s caring and loving nature. Donations will go toward the funding of Buddy Benches in the elementary schools. A Buddy Bench is a specially marked bench that helps children recognize when others are in need of a friend. Donations can be mailed to: Eastchester School District, Attn. Business Office, 580 White Plains Road, Eastchester, NY 10709. Checks should be made payable to Eastchester School District. In the memo line please clearly write “Lily Love Buddy Bench.” Donations may be tax deductible.

District Calendar The District will not be printing or mailing calendars for the 2016-17 school year. There will be a version on the web site that can be downloaded and printed. In addi-tion, the District will continue to post events on the web based calendar that can be downloaded to a smart phone or PDA.
Reducing ExpensesAt the July 5th Board of Education meeting, the Board authorized the refunding of two outstanding serial bonds, one a construction bond issued in 2009 and one a tax certiorari refund bond issued in 2008. The refunding of these two bonds will generate a savings of approximate-ly $31,000 per year over the next 12 years while maintaining the original term of the bonds.
