    How do you create a procedure for deciding thewinner of a summer reading contest based on thenumber of books read, the variety of books, thedifficulty of the books, the length of the books,and the quality of written book reports?

    RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES FOR ALLMODEL-ELICITING ACTIVITIESIt is recommended to have all of these supplies in a central

    location in the room. It is recommended to let the students

    know that they are available, but not to encourage them to

    use anything in particular.

    Overhead transparencies and transparencymarkers/pens, whiteboards and markers,posterboards, or other presentation tools suchas a document camera.

    CalculatorsRulers, scissors, tape

    Markers, colored pencils, pencils

    Construction paper, graph paper, lined paper

    Paper towels or tissues (for cleaningtransparencies)

    Manila folders or paper clips for collecting thestudents work

    Optional: Computers with programs such asMicrosoft Word and Excel

    WHAT ARE MODEL-ELICITING

    ACTIVITIES (MEAs)?Model-Eliciting Activities are problem activitiesexplicitly designed to help students developconceptual foundations for deeper and higherorder ideas in mathematics, science, engineering,and other disciplines. Each task asks students tomathematically interpret a complex real-worldsituation and requires the formation of amathematical description, procedure, or methodfor the purpose of making a decision for a realisticclient. Because teams of students are producing a

    description, procedure, or method (instead of aone-word or one-number answer), studentssolutions to the task reveal explicitly how theyare thinking about the given situation.

    THE Summer Reading MEA CONSISTS OFFOUR COMPONENTS:1) Newspaper article: Students individuallyread the newspaper article to become familiarwith the context of the problem. This handout ison page 7.

    2) Readiness questions: Students individuallyanswer these reading comprehension questionsabout the newspaper article to become evenmore familiar with the context and beginningthinking about the problem. This handout is onpage 8.3) Problem statement: In teams of three orfour, students work on the problem statementfor 45 90 minutes. This time range depends onthe amount of self-reflection and revision youwant the students to do. It can be shorter if you

    are looking for students first thoughts, and canbe longer if you expect a polished solution andwell-written letter. The handouts are on pages 9-12.4) Process of sharing solutions: Each teamwrites their solution in a letter or memo to theclient. Then, each team presents their solution tothe class. Whole class discussion is intermingled
