A SUMMER REID BE A PART OF IT & GET IN
ON THE
HEALTH CARE
CONVERSATION!
Join the Summer Movement - Read
T.R. Reid’s “The Healing of America:
A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper,
and Fairer Health Care” Aligning Forces for Quality - South
Central PA has teamed up with the
Central PA library systems, as well as
WITF to encourage residents to start discussing health
care in our communities and ideas for
making improvements.
Pick up a copy of the book at your
local library. To help jump start the conversation,
the public is being asked to participate
in A Summer Reid - a special program
that invites residents to visit local li-
braries to borrow The Healing of
America: A Global Quest for Better,
Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care,
written by New York Times bestsel-
ling author T. R. Reid and hold a dis-
cussion with their book clubs, friends,
family members, co-workers and etc. In the book, T.R. Reid explains the
handling of health care in other coun-
tries, including France, Britain, Germa-
ny, Japan and others. He shares the
details of his tour of successful, afford-
able universal health care systems.
Using a plain-English explanation, T.R.
Reid helps individuals understand the
state of health care in the United
States and around the world. Individuals who read the book also
have the chance to win a copy of the
book, attend a private book signing
with T.R. Reid and enjoy an invitation-
only dinner hosted by Aligning Forces
for Quality - South Central PA on
Wednesday, September 11, 2013 to
hear him speak. Thirty winners will be
chosen. After reading the book, participate in
a discussion and complete a survey to
be entered into the drawing.
AT THE
ANNVILLE FREE
LIBRARY Stop in to look at our display and pick
up a copy of the book to read. After reading the book go to the web-
site: www.transforming health.org to fill in a survey for a chance to meet
the author.
We will be having a speaker and a discussion session sometime in Sep-
tember , dates and times to be
announced later. We have several copies of the book
and it is available on Amazon (as of
this writing the hardcover price was
lower than the paperback) and there
is a Kindle version too.
GEEK NIGHT @ AFL
Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint
PowerPoint uses a graphical approach to presenta-tions in the form of slide
shows that accompany the oral deliv-ery of the topic. It gives you every-thing you need to produce a profes-sional-looking presentation. Power-Point offers word processing, outlin-ing, drawing, graphing, and presenta-tion management tools- all designed to be easy to use and learn. This pro-gram is widely used in business and classrooms and is an effective tool when used for training purposes.
Join us on Monday, July 22 at 6:00 pm when Art Murray will demonstrate how to create a great looking slide show presentation of your own.
This program is free! Bring a friend!

Extended Use Fees And
Replacement Costs In
Library Land Dear Library Patrons, It has come to my attention that there is some confusion about fines on overdue materials somehow being viewed as re-placement costs. I have to say this just puts a twist in my dust jackets. Let me explain. It goes without saying that a per-son with a library card has signed a legally binding docu-ment declaring that they will obey the rules of the library. Most libraries have lending peri-ods for their materials so that everyone has a chance to use them. (Ours is 3 weeks for most things, 1 week for DVDs.) To encourage compliance with this rule a sort of tax is levied ( For most items it is 25 cents a day per item, for DVDs it is $1.00 a day per item.) on items kept longer than the lending period. This fine has nothing to do with the worth or condition of the item. It is, plain and simple, an extended use fee. There are, unfortunately, times when library materials, oh the horror, are not returned. A pa-tron in this situation will be sent long overdue notices in the mail.
If the items are not returned they will be charged a replacement cost for the item plus a pro-cessing fee plus the accrued overdue fines. Needless to say, this can add up to a fairly hefty amount rather quickly. What most people do not realize is that keeping library materials is actually a felony offense. Now we are certain that most folks would rather not be known as a felon. It does not look good on a resume. So the next time you find your-self facing an extended use fee please try to refrain from saying the items you have out are not worth the cost of the fine and you might as well keep them. It is our sincere hope that you now know the difference between an extended use fee, a replacement cost and a library felony. Yours truly, Mildred Bunn, MLS
LUNCH TIME
TAI CHI Laura Reazer will be teaching the short Yang style form – a slow graceful form of exercise that can be done seated or standing. It is helpful for improv-ing balance, reducing stiffness in joints, and increasing range of motion.
It is an excellent way to refresh and reduce stress. This form can be modified to suit any physical ability. Tai Chi has re-
cently been recognized by Har-vard Medical School for it’s many contributions to over all health.
It is no impact, and we never get down on the floor. It is truly an exercise you can do all throughout your life.
The 8 week class at Annville Free Library will begin Tues-day July 9 th at 12:10 – 12:50. Class meets every Tuesday for 8 weeks, and costs $40.
Please register in advance by contacting certified instructor,
Laura Reazer either at 717-272-3148, or through her website at
lebanontaichi.com.
Class will be cancelled if we do not have 10 minimum.
YA BOOK REVIEW by Kate Foley
Maya Delaney's town is small--very small. It consists of about two hundred people and doesn't even show up on the map in Cana-da. Tourists aren't
common--new residents are even less so. So when a new guy shows up in school, Rafe, everyone immediately pays at-tention to him. He's the bad boy in town and all of the girls are swooning over him--except for Maya. But for some reason Rafe is only interested in Maya. He's also interested in her paw print birthmark.
The Gathering is the first book in the Darkness Rising series. A perfect blend of humor, fantasy, and adventure, the characters in the Darkness Rising series will stay with you forever.
