Everyone knows the importance of reading for academic success. Parents often ask “What can I do to instill the love of reading in my child?” Here are some of our suggestions: Allow your child to be part of their summer reading selection process. Find out their reading interests, and let THEM decide what THEY would like to read. Whether it be a particu- lar series of books, a favorite author, a comic book, or magazine, the em- phasis should be on reading for FUN! READ EVERY DAY! PreK to Grade 3 students may fill out the Bedwell summer reading calendar and return it to school in September for spe- cial recognition! Summer Reading 2013 Marion T. Who is Mo Willems?

Bedwell students love reading Mo Willems! Mo Willems, a New York Times bestselling author has been writing children’s books since 2003. He has won three Caldecott honor medals for his picture books, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Knuffle Bunny : a Cautionary Tale and Knuffle Bunny Too : a Case of Mistaken Identity. Mo Willems has also written the extremely popular Elephant & Piggie books. The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award (established in 2006) is given for beginning readers. Two Elephant & Piggie books have won this award, There Is a Bird on Your Head (2008), Are you Ready to Play Outside? (2009). Three additional titles are Geisel Honor winners, We are in a Book!
