ABOUT NORTHLANDNorthland College is a private liberal arts college with a progressive focus on the environment and sustainability. In the summer, we open our doors and invite high school students to explore and experience our unique offerings.

LOCATIONWe are located in the heart of Ashland, Wisconsin, on the south shore of Lake Superior in a spot like nowhere else on Earth. We’re surrounded by a million acres of forest and the largest freshwater lake in the world. Both of these amazing natural resources serve as living laboratories and natural playgrounds.

ARRIVAL & DEPARTUREUnless specified on your confirmation, please adhere to checking in between 2-2:30 p.m. on the first day of your session, and checking out between 11-11:30 a.m. on the last day of your session. We can provide transportation to and from Duluth International Airport.

HOUSINGYou’ll room in one of Northland’s residential halls, unless you are on a camping trip. Roommates will be assigned by gender, two students to a room.

MEALSMeals are served in Northland’s cafeteria from a kitchen staff skilled at providing well-rounded and creative meals, while accommodating dietary restrictions. Vegetarian and vegan options are available at all meals. On field days, you’ll assemble a brown-bag lunch. On camping trips, you will have hot or cold breakfasts, brown-bag lunch, and a hot dinner cooked over a camp stove or fire.

HEALTH, SAFETY & WELLNESSOur goal is to provide a supervised, safe, and positive environment where you can experience personal growth and enjoyment. Our program is state licensed, and our staff is fully trained in safety, CPR, lifeguarding, and first aid.

Geology & Rock Climbing: Learning From RocksExplore scenic waterfalls, rock outcroppings, and stone beaches as you learn about the geologic history of the Lake Superior Region, including Copper Falls and the Penokee Mountains, with local expert Professor Tom Fitz. Spend time in the Northland College geology lab to preview rocks and minerals, then explore in the field. Spend an afternoon learning to rock climb with Assistant Professor of Outdoor Education Elizabeth Andre.

Upper Namakagon Expedition: Downstream WildernessExplore the Namakagon watershed through this canoe and camping adventure. No previous experience required! Practice paddle skills on Lake Namakagon while learning about water quality, natural history, and loons. Experience nocturnal birds of prey during an owl prowl. Then enjoy running a few rapids on the Namakagon River for two days while learning about wildlife, invasive species, and river protection. Spend an afternoon with the National Park Service practicing Tenkara, the Japanese method of fly-fishing, which uses only a rod, line, and fly. Gain teamwork skills, learn to set up camp, and cook over a fire.

North Country BackpackerHike through the Penokee Mountains on the North Country Trail, America’s longest national scenic trail. These rugged hills, within sight of Lake Superior, inspire plenty of awe. Northland College instructors guide you along a twenty-mile stretch, where wildlife abounds and immense timber stands prevail. This section of trail intersects granite overlooks, clear lakes, narrow waterfalls, and hemlock forests on its 4,600-mile course from North Dakota to New York. Track ‘n Howl: Wisconsin WildlifeExplore northern Wisconsin’s lakes and woods as you hear from experts about creatures that fly and run wild here. Learn about the northwoods keystone predator, Canis lupus—the grey wolf—and participate in a tracking and howling adventure. Spend a day aboard a pontoon boat learning about loons and another day tracking elk around Clam Lake.

Field Skills CertificationGain field skills by practicing orienteering and GPS navigation, chainsaw safety, and become certified in first aid, CPR, and boater safety. Build leadership and teamwork experience while acquiring these valuable skills. Whether you want to go into a natural resources career, join the military, apply for an outdoor job, or simply hone your skills, this program is for you!

Storms ‘n Stars Get ready to investigate local meteorology and climate, and explore astronomy of the dark northern sky with regional experts and Northland College staff. Students will spend a day in Duluth, Minnesota, learning the basics of weather forecasting from a meteorologist at the WDIO-TV weather station and viewing constellations of the night sky using the Spitz A3P Star Machine at the Marshall Alworth Planetarium.

Drawing from NatureIllustrated nature journals help us observe, understand, and communicate nature through the lens of art and writing. Try your hand at drawing and painting techniques using pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, and colored pencil to create nature journals that tell your story of the Lake Superior area. Explore basic plant taxonomy, tree identification, geology, ecology, and natural and human history of this region. Hone your descriptive journaling skills and illustrations as you take part in inspirational readings, group discussion, guided exercises, and field visits to various landscapes and ecosystems including lakes, forests, wetlands, and meadows.

Mysteries ‘n Histories of Lake SuperiorExplore Lake Superior through the best recreation activities available on the Lake. Spend an afternoon on the water learning about the history of the Apostle Islands and shipwrecks, still visible. Learn about the region’s cultural history in a Voyageur canoe. Explore the Lake Superior sea caves by kayak and practice paddle boarding on the Chequamegon Bay.

Aquatic Ecology Field AcademyThis fun and intensive field academy will give you hands-on experience in water resource management with Northland faculty and College interns. Use professional water testing equipment, conduct stream discharge measurement, discuss ecological climate change adaptations, and study beach health management, water chemistry, lake ecology, invertebrate ecology, and watershed restoration. As you develop leadership, teamwork, and boat safety skills, you will gain exposure to laboratory safety and procedures in Northland’s state-certified Applied Research and Environmental Lab.

All-Girls Namakagon Canoe AdventureExplore the Namakagon River on this all-girls adventure. No previous experience required. Practice your paddle skills on Lake Namakagon while learning about water quality, natural history, and loons. Experience nocturnal birds of prey in the northwoods during an owl prowl. Outdoor SurvivalHave you ever wondered if you could spend a night in the woods without bringing any food or a tent? In this exciting and adventurous session, you will practice the skills you need to survive a night in the northwoods, including edible plant identification, building debris shelters, knife skills and safety, fire by friction (bow drill), orienteering and map reading, water treatment, and more.

Life Ways of the Ojibwe and the VoyageursBegin your exploration focusing on traditional crafts and life ways of the Ojibwe people, including tanning deer hides, beadwork, basketry, quillwork, traditional and medicinal plants, and storytelling. Then explore similarities of the Voyageurs’ life ways in culture and tradition and gain an understanding of the relationships between these two cultures. Become familiar with the Voyageurs’ life, including the importance of fur trade, paddle, portaging, and song. Paddle a Voyageur canoe on Lake Superior, build a fire with flint and steel, cook a meal over it, and make your own birchbark basket.

policiesREGISTRATION PACKET

The online registration, packet must be completed, signed, and returned one week prior to the start of your session. Students will not be allowed to attend their session until all necessary paperwork has been received. Items in the packet to be signed and returned include:

CONFIRMATIONEmail confirmation will be sent immediately upon completion of online registration and payment.

Confirmation will be sent within two weeks upon receiving registration materials and payment.

Be sure to read through the Summer Handbook. It contains important information on what to expect, answers to your questions, and a packing list.

STUDENT CANCELLATIONCancellations received before June 1, 2015, will be refunded; however, a $150 administrative fee will be withheld. Cancellations made after June 1, 2015, are non-refundable.

Cancellations must be in writing and can be submitted to [email protected] or faxed to (715) 682-1218. If a cancellation is due to a student’s illness or medical reasons, or other uncontrollable circumstance, the registration fee may be refunded, minus the administrative fee, if a doctor’s note/official letter accompanies the cancellation.

If a student has a significant discipline problem during the session, we reserve the right to dismiss him or her, without refund, for the remainer of the session.

Session days missed for incomplete or missing paperwork are non-refundable.

SESSION CANCELLATIONNorthland College reserves the right to cancel a program. Should this occur, Northland College will refund tuition paid or a free session transfer will be available.

Registration DeadlineRegistration closes fourteen days prior to thesession start date, unless session is filled. Full

payment must be made at registration. You may register for more than one session. Space is

limited. Click here to register.

It’s a great place to learn, play, and explore. Our programs are designed for all skill levels and no

previous experience is required. Just come with an open mind and be ready for some adventurous fun.

Financial AssistanceNorthland College welcomes all who wish to participate in our sessions. Limited financial

assistance is granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call (715) 682-1264 for

an application. Deadline is May 15, 2015.
