TINKERING

Grades 6-12

Students learn basic tinkering skills by deconstructing household items (appliances,

toys, etc.) purchased from the Goodwill. Each student will receive one “gadget” for the

course to focus on. Using the design process students will explore different uses of

simple machines within their gadget and work to understand how it works, and more

importantly, how materials available to them can be used to replicate, change, or

improve their gadget’s function. Some circuitry and soldering may be involved, but

there is less of a focus on electronics and more of a focus on using simple machines to

complete complex tasks.

What does this look like?

Each session will begin with a conceptual mini lesson featuring the six classic simple

machines or an introduction to a relevant tool or skill, such as soldering. At the initial

sessions, students will engage with their personal gadget and focus on deconstructing

and understanding how it works. As they learn more about simple machines, the

tinkering time will begin to focus on modifications and rebuilding their gadgets using

their new knowledge to achieve a different purpose for the gadget. For example, a past

student turned an old coffee pot into a functioning automatic pancake maker.

MATH

GEOMETRY FOR SA CREDIT

Grades 9-12

Please note: This is not an honors course AND Sewickley Academy students younger

than rising Grade 9 should not register for it.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra I, including mastery of radical

expressions.

Students will explore both Euclidean and solid geometries, with emphasis on plane

geometry. Topics will include: logic and proofs, polygons, perimeter and area, surface

area and volume, and similar shapes (ratio and proportion). Lessons and homework

assignments will challenge students to apply these concepts, developing both inductive

and deductive logical reasoning skills.

Students will earn one credit towards Senior School graduation through successful

completion of this five-week course.

This course will be taught using the flipped classroom approach. Students will need a

valid email account that they can access. Part of the student’s homework will be to

watch lessons online and take notes. Class time will be used for expanding upon the

online lessons by participating in a variety of activities which will include hands on

activities and individual and group work.

Please Note: The instructor will post videos for every lesson but not all lessons will be

taught using the flipped method. Some of the videos are there simply as a resource and

for students that miss class.

Visiting students are responsible for verifying that credit for the course will be accepted

by their own schools.

Vacations/Missed Classes: The instructor is making videos to go with every lesson.

Students that miss should watch these videos to help them learn the material they

Page 14: Summer Programs 2019 - Sewickley Academy · 2019-05-30 · Course registrations can be canceled in no less than 10 business days before the beginning of ... Unstoppable and Promised

missed. If a student needs to miss due to a vacation, they should inform the instructor

before the class begins. Students that miss are still responsible for all tests and

homework.

Textbook will be available through Sewickley Academy’s bookstore.

Withdrawal/Refund Policy: In order to cover an entire year of geometry in five weeks

(24 classes) the course moves at a fast pace. Teaching it using the flipped method will

allow more time for student questions in the class. Students that struggle in math may

find the pace of this course challenging. Students who formally withdrawal by the third

day of class, will receive a 67% refund. After the third day no refunds will be given.
