Summer Programme 2005 A Photo Journey
This is a 6-week programme which includes 2 weeks of field trips in China from 5 – 17 June 2005. 30 students and 2 faculty members from the Department of Real
Estate participated in the programme. Some RE Year 3 students currently studying in China for their SEP/NOC
semesters also participated in some of the field trips and lectures. The group visited real estate institutions in both
the public and private sectors, as well as development projects in the residential, industrial and commercial
sectors of Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing.
The group being briefed by Karen Tee of Ascendas on industrial property development and management at the Singapore-Suzhou Industrial Park….
望房兴叹 is a problem related to housing provision in Shanghai. Jeremy understands the situation only too well…
Madeline Ong of CapitaLand China briefs the group on the Oasis Riveria project and highlights the inside stories about the local market, such as skipping the
number “13” in the addresses of residential units….
In one of Shanghai’s high-class residential projects,Jun Wei is seen here making use of the fitness corner in yet another feat to beat the world’s current chin-up record.
(Check it out with him on a surprising discovery – gravitational forces in Shanghai are less intense than what we experience in Singapore!)
The interior of a show flat in the Shanghai Racquet Club and Apartments, an ING project in suburban Shanghai…
The Bund Centre, a commercial project in Shanghai - waiting to use the toilet in the office tower (?)
Fook Jam is captivated and amazed by the posh interior design found in the bathrooms of the units in Binjiang Shimao, a top-end residential project …
All the sub-groups succeeded in locating the 断桥残雪 in Hangzhou… (Do you know why it is called the Broken Bridge? After supporting our weight, it
will be!)
Much to our relief, a policeman left the session after being satisfied that nothing illegal was discussed…
Splitting the gain or cost (?)… Yingying and Serene have just clinched a high-valued real estate transaction, calibrated to the nearest
fen (Chinese RMB cent) …
This old comrade was on guard to stop the class from stepping onto the manicured lawn in the campus of Nanjing University.
Then he volunteered to take a group photo for the class… one, two, three…
In the prime residential district of Nanjing - Professor Yao highlighting to us the architectural and cultural history embodied
in these buildings that are worthy of preservation …
A presentation by Derek in Xuanwu Lake, Nanjing…anintellectual discourse held in a tranquil environment ….
Interacting with students from the Department of Urban and Resources Science, Nanjing University …..
Enriching, Worthwhile and Unforgettable - Lim Chiu Ling
“This first-hand experience and knowledge you gain will not be written in the books you read. What you shall learn will serve to inspire and criticize what you know, and to uncover the paradoxes and intricate matters of the real estate in China. The sheer size, dynamism and potential of China’s real estate warrants a close look. It’s a once in a lifetime experience in which I have had a lot of fun and made many good friends. To sum it up in 3 words: Enriching, Worthwhile and Unforgettable.”
A Trip Beyond Expectations – Ong Jun Wei
“I signed up for the Summer Programme expecting to see much, do much, and learn much. At the end of the trip, I achieved all these and beyond. The programme was certainly an enriching one, with lectures by eminent academics from Tongji, Fudan and Nanjing University as well as seminars by renowned organizations in China such as CapitaLand and Colliers International. Through the visits to residential and commercial projects in China, we managed to gain a quick understanding of how the real estate mechanism worked e.g. regulations, trends and characteristics of the various sectors. Very importantly, the participants bonded closely throughout the whole trip - to the point of sadness upon foreseeing the impending mornings without the sight of one another as the end of the trip drew nearer.”
Feedback from Summer Programme Participants
An Eye Opening, Learning Experience – Annabel Siow Ker Sin
“I heard about China, seen her, touch her and did the Summer Programme - China. Nice food, great bonding with my course-mates and lecturers (The only chance you can ride bicycle with your lecturer!). And…the scale of real estate developments in Singapore is nothing compared to China. It makes me feel that Singapore is really small. You should go and experience all yourself. An eye opening, learning experience!”
Impressions From Inter-City Travel – Michelle Tam Ray San
"The Summer Programme gave us a great chance to understand how different real estate markets operate and function in other places. Even the coach rides from one destination to another were an eye-opener to us. The coach ride from Hangzhou to Nanjing left me the deepest impression, as I was able to watch buffalos working in the muddy fields in the suburban areas. It was definitely a valuable experience and a meaningful trip for me."
You Must Be There To Experience It - Tan Wen Pin, Brian Patrick
“No one can ignore China’s rising influence and economic clout. When I heard of the Summer Programme I jumped at the opportunity to see for myself the development of China from a real estate perspective. I was impressed with the level of sophistication, scale, development and planning that shaped Shanghai’s urban land form. To fully appreciate the extent and dynamics of the Chinese real estate scene you must be there to experience it. It was definitely an eye opening programme!”
