Crime Lab #37-Instructor Andrea Brown. Grades 6-8. Come be a detective! Work like a CSI to solve crimes using forensics skills. Students will learn to lift finger prints, measure blood spatter, observe characteristics as a sketch artist does, identify mystery powders and liquids, and other crime scene activities. The last day, students will be in-volved with solving a crime in a "set up" crime scene using the skills they learned all week.
CSI Jr. Solve Mysteries Like the Big Kids with New Crimes! #63-Instructor Patrice Stanzione. Grades 2-3. Learn how fingerprints, mystery fluids and powders, and paper chromatography can solve a silly crime using your brain and your senses. Using the same strategies and activities the big guys do, problem solve to a logical conclu-sion while learning new things. Be a science detective and save the day! In those same 10 years, how we consume information and leverage technology every day has evolved before our very eyes. In turn that has changed the risks associated in modern computing. In Defending Against Hackers - CyberSecurity 101, we will be diving into the inner workings of modern day computers, defendingthem against potential attackers, and increasing awareness of cybersercurity by delivering a basic cybersecurity education that enhances leadership, communication, cooperation, and critical thinking amongst students. In Part 2 of this class, we're going to be diving into more complex cyber security issues, including encryption, decryption, advanced cyber-security concepts and configurations for applications.

Electrify Yourself! #4, 42-Instructor Lyle Majeska. Grades 4-5 and 5-8. Become an Electronics Technician. Learn how to solder and identify components to build a fun take-home project. Emphasis will be placed on reading a schematic diagram and handling tools safely.
Engineer Like a Superhero #24-Instructor Andrea Brown. Grades 3-5. Come be a "Super" Engineer. Use your powers to plan, design, build, test and revise strongest structures, tallest skyscrapers and other "Super" STEM projects. We will investigate simple machines, making "super" games. Students will use math and language arts skills as superhero powers to assist with their engineering skills. We will incorporate some art to make this class STEAM (Science, Technolgy, Engineering, Art and Math). This is a double-length class ending at 11:45.
EV3 Go Green #6, 28-Instructor Kim Bach. Grades 4-5 and 5-8. With the new EV3 Robotics, you will work in pairsto go through a series of training exercises to prepare you to guide your robot in solving real-world engineering chal-lenges related to renewable energy. After training, you will go on a simulated mission to solve a real-world problem by fixing a power plant, a wind turbine, solar panel on the house roof, a dam, and more. Can you make your city GREEN? This is a double-length class ending at 11:45. Fantastic Flyers #56-Instructor Vanessa Lozano. Grades K-1. Make, fly and take home a variety of airplanes. Learn some of the important physics that make these projects fly.
Fishline Physics #45-Instructor Robert Smith. Grades 2-6. Make a working phone, create a string musical instru-ment, create static electricity. Create giant bubbles and clouds in a jar. Create a stream of water on a string. Illus-trate diffusion of molecules.

Fossil Hunters #62-Instructor Vanessa Lozano. Grades K-1. In this fun and interactive class, you will learn all about fossils: What are they? How are they made? Where do you find them? What tools do you use to excavate them? Go on a wild fossil hunt! Create your own fossil and excavate it as well, just like a Paleontologist!
Geology Rocks! #16-Instructor Pat Smith. Grades 4-6. Journey to the center of the earth as we explore streams, volcanoes and mountains. See how sediment settles, do a core sampling, make a topographic map in 3D, and check out our YSC Augmented Reality Sandbox. Rock cycles and mineral resources are investigated. This class meets most of the requirements for BSA merit badge – Geology. This is a double-length class ending at 11:45.
Get STEAMED! #73-Instructor Patrice Stanzione. Grades 2-3. The interrelationships of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math make for some wonderful inventions. Create tessellations like Escher, using math and art. Build structures using engineering and math. Use technology and science to invent amazing things. Get the DIRT on Soil #72-Instructor Vanessa Lozano. Grades K-1. Come and and explore the exciting world of mud or more commonly known as Soil Science, determine the composition and texture of soils, use a Munsell color system and learn about soil colors, make your own soil profile with a centrifuge and learn about particle sizes and density, then create your own dirt pudding soil profile that you can eat! Create your own soil filter to learn about contaminant hydrogeology. Create a Berlese funnel and learn the importance small critters play in keeping our soils healthy. Make your own soil drawings and soil crayons to create your own soil painting masterpieces to take home! This is a double-length class ending at 11:45.
Go Fly a Kite (and a Plane) #14-Instructor Robert Smith. Grades 2-6. Design and test model paper planes, mini-rockets, tetrahedral kites, box kites, flying saucers, and other flying objects.
How Stuff Works: The Dissection Episode #5, 18-Instructor Jennifer Collins. Grades 4-5 and 6-8. Students will study the anatomy and physiology of common vertebrates and invertebrates through the dissection of up to 5 species. See how common organisms in our world function and move. "Let's Go Outside! #7, 40-Instructor Pat Smith. Grades 4-8. In this energized class, we will be designing experi-ments (STEM) that focus on Ecology, Air, Water and Land pollution and discussing possible negative consequences to wildlife, people, and the environment. Which animals are endangered in California? What role do bees play? Then we’ll go outside and study two habitats with different plants and animals. Minecraft Science & 3D Printing #74, 85-Instructor Nathan Wu. Grades 3-6 and 4-8. Explore the exciting worlds of physics, computer science, architecture, and electricity with Minecraft! Learn how to build Redstone electrical cir-cuits and machines, work in Adobe Photoshop to create graphics for blocks and items, and experiment with WorldEdit to mathematically create massive structures quickly! Design contraptions, skyscrapers, and use physics to create rollercoasters and launch projectiles. Team up with classmates on our multiplayer server to build amazing creations! At the end of the course, students will take home a 3D printed copy of their favorite Minecraft creation.
Minecraft Survival World Geology and Topography Parts 1-4 #15, 25, 33, 83-Instructor Jim Pike. Grades 3-6 and 3-8. If you love to explore, conquer, and build this is the perfect class for you. Playing in survival worlds is the purest way to play Minecraft as the goal of the game becomes to Mine and Craft. In this class we will explore where coal, iron and other ores come from and how they are found in real life as we search for them in Minecraft. Also we will examine topographical structures in our Minecraft worlds and relate that information to the real world as well. Parts 1 through 4 are not required to register for any of these classes.

Music Video Production #65, 75-Instructor Kwesi Johnson. Grades 5-8. Create awesome music videos using a HERO 4S GoPro camera. Learn how to edit, direct, and write short videos. Leave with a copy of your own movie.
Natural Disasters #64-Instructor Stephanie Bendlin-Trevino. Grades 4-6. We're not in Kansas anymore...learn the science behind earthquakes, volcanoes, tornados, huricanes, and floods. Create a building and see if it can stand the test of an earthquake. Build a seismometer, create tornadoes in a bottle, and build an anemometer. Explore and create various models of volcanoes.
Robotics Go Green #34-Instructor Kim Bach. Grades 4-5. You will work in pairs to go through a series of training exercises to prepare you to guide your robot in solving real-world engineering challenges related to renewable energy. After training, you will go on a simulated mission to solve a real-world problem by fixing a power plant, a wind turbine, solar panel on the house roof, a dam, and more. Can you make your city GREEN? Slimey Science #2-Instructor Patrice Stanzione. Grades K-3. If it's disgusting, we'll make it. If it's icy, oozy, or slimey, we will create it. If it runs, grows, bubbles, or burps, we will conduct experiments with it in this totally hands-on class of activities and discovery. STEM- Renewable Energy #69-Instructor Stephanie Bendlin-Trevino. Grades 5-8. Harness the power of the sun and wind during this class. Learn how solar enery and wind energy can be turned into electric energy. Engineer a solar car, eat smores from a solar oven built at camp, make wind turbines, race sail boats and more.
STEM-Toy Creation #10-Instructor Stephanie Bendlin-Trevino. Grades 6-8. Students will explore different types of science (chemistry, physics, electricy, and magentism) and engineer a variety of toys. Students will create and en-gineer a remote control snake, a doodle-bot, magnetic slime, and so much more. This is a double-length class ending at 11:45.
That's Gross, Don't Eat That! #77-Instructor Patrice Stanzione. Grades K-2. What's yummy to some cultures is just plain weird to others. Come see, feel, smell, and even taste some exotic foods from other cultures. Understand food chains and webs, and dissect an owl pellet to see what and owl eats. This class changes and varies it's foods and cultures each year so children can return summer after summer and still make new discoveries!
The World of Microrganisms #55-Instructor Stephanie Bendlin-Trevino. Grades 6-8. Ever wonder about the things we can't see? Well this class will explore micorogranisms or creatures that are too small to see with our eyes alone. We'll be using microscopes, learning how to make our own slides, and test for bacteria.
Tune In To Nature #32-Instructor Robert Smith. Grades 2-6. Study nature, conduct snail races, direct/assist snail painters, examine ladybugs, conduct cricket- jumping contests, examine mealworms, earthworms, and pillbugs. Sketch and study other insects and small creatures.
Woodworking #60-Instructor Lyle Majeska. Grades 5-8. Learn to make toys and useful projects out of pine wood. Emphasis will be placed on using hand and power tools safely. Older students will make a wooden writing pen.
Zany Hands-on Science Experiments I-IV #81, 82, 84, 86-Instructor Haley Chappell. Grades K-8. Come join us for all new activities this year! Students will learn about various science topics all while doing hands-on science ex-periments. Students will learn about entomology, biology, general science, astronomy, chemistry, physics, agricultural science, and much more!
Weird Science #50-Instructor Vanessa Lozano. Grades K-1. Make an aircraft that is 3 feet long, a density rainbow, styrofoam gliders, silly putty and flubber! Learn the science behind all the experiments.

Important Information about Registering Your Children for Classes
When Should I Register?Registration is first come, first served. Register early to avoid disappointment.
What Age Must My Child Be to Participate?Grade level is listed on the class schedule. Thhis is the grade your child wil be entering in September, 2017. Preschool Students must be 4 years old as of December, 2016 and must be registered for the school year beginning in September, 2017.
Where Are the Classes Located?Bixby Elementary, 16446 Wedgeworth Drive in Hacienda Heights (Across the street from Wilson High School).
What About Lunch Time Supervision?Your child’s safety and comfort are extremely important to us. Any child who is enrolled in one or both morning classes and a 12:30 PM class the same week will be supervised during the lunch time. Students must bring their own lunch. Activities will be provided when the students have finsihed eating. There is no additional charge for this supervision.
How Do I Register?
1. Use a separate class application, or photocopy for each student.2. Fill out all requested information at the top of the application.3. Fill out all requested information for the classes you want.4. Unless you have previously purchased a life membership fee, your membership expires on May 1. If you are joining or rejoining YSC now, write the membership fee. Add this to the TOTAL FEE.5. Write the TOTAL AMOUNT ENCLOSED.6. Cancellation PolicyIf you must cancel your registration, notify us on week prior to the start ofclass IN WRITING. Mail your can-cellation or change to P.O. Box 5723 Hacienda Heights, CA 91745. Youmay also e-mail us at [email protected] cancellations can be accepted over the phone. After our summer session has begun, written cancel-lations will be accepted in the library(Bixby Elementary School) on Mon-days. A credit slip redeemable for any YSC class or YSC store purchasein the next year will be issued for the value of the cancelledclass minus a $20 per class processing fee. Credit slips will be mailed seperately within three weeks. A refund will be issued only if the class is closed or cancelled by YSC. Please allow three weeks for refunds to be processed.
