Summer PlacementsEven if work placements are not integrated into your degree you can still apply for summerplacements / internships which can range in length from 1-12 weeks over the summer.

Some summer placements are unpaid, others offer to repay travel expenses whilst a few are paid. Unpaid placements are still good opportunities for you to gain new skills, network and showfuture employers that you are dedicated and committed to their degree subject and have somerelevant work experience to back up your claims.

Interested in a Summer Research Placement?Notes from informal meetingComments from Prof Greg TuckerProf Greg Tucker has managed for a number of years the summer placements awarded to the Schoolof Biosciences by the BBSRC.

Key points from Prof Tucker- When you leave university and think about getting a job maybe that job will be research?

What does research mean? A summer research opportunity gives you the opportunity tospend 10 weeks in a research lab working alongside a team to give you a feel for whatresearch is like

    - For you as students it is an ideal opportunity to get experience is this (research) what I wantto do when I finish university?

    - The summer research experience is good for academic members of staff you are a veryuseful pair of hands maybe the academic staff has an idea for a research project but justneeds someone (you) to do the work

    - You may get a research paper out of the summer research opportunity- You need to be on target in your studies for at least a 2:1 to be considered for a BBSRC

summer research placement in School of Biosciences- You will receive a payment around 200 /week for approx 10 weeks- Prof Greg Tucker manages summer placements awarded to the School of Biosciences by the

BBSRC. In previous years there has been an element of flexibility in terms of what thestudents can do research wise.

    - There are additional opportunities with other sponsors (described in this leaflet). Make sureyou find out what it is the sponsors need they maybe prescriptive about you being a 2

    ndyear

student for example.- It is rare for the sponsors to state a particular nationality they are looking for.- Identify an area that interests you

Comments from Dr Simon WhelhamDr Simon Whelham had a summer placement student in 2012 funded by The Endocrine Society

Key points from Dr Whelham- Do something you are interested in approach lecturers / academic staff whose work you are

interested in- How do you identify lecturers / academics? Maybe it is from the lecturers whose lectures

have you liked? Whose lectures have you found interesting? look at staff profiles on theSchool webpage www.nottingham.ac.uk/biosciences

    - Once you have approached an academic the academic can generally supply the text for theapplication (Project brief)

    - Your output can be phenomenal; you can be part of a publication; your outputs can enablesubsequent projects

    - if you are interested in doing a PhD you are already known to staff; the experience can setyou apart when it comes to PhD applications;

Comments from Dr Sarah McMullenDr Sarah McMullen has successfully applied to sponsors for a summer research placement (Organix,Rank Prize for example)

Key points from Dr McMullen- In terms of how you approach academic staff take suggestions to supervisors take the

leaflet handout with you so you can suggest sources of funding- In terms of where else to look for sponsorship make sure you understand what the sponsors

require some are quite general some are very specific -- For the sponsored summer research placements the application often needs to be a joint

application between the student and the supervisor- Be proactive talk to academic staff at the end of lectures ust because a lecturer is

lecturing on a particular topic this doesnt mean this is their area of research- Talk to your tutor tell them about your interests in this

    - Try and find academic staff working on things you find interesting each member ofacademic staff will have a profile on the university webpage - find out what various staffmembers areas of research are

    - Talk to academic staff / your tutor - it maybe they have contacts / can recommend colleagueselsewhere if you want to do a summer research placement in a university close to yourhome town for example

    - Maybe you can approach 2 academic members of staff so they put in a oint proposal thiscan be better for academic staff so they share the workload

    - For academic staff having a summer research project student can be one of the mostrewarding and satisfying teaching experiences you get to know a student very well and getto see a keen student develop research expertise.

Comments form LizaLiza is a final year animal science student and competed a summer research placement with SimonWelham at the end of her 2

    ndyear

    - Ive learnt so much in 10 weeks more than I ever feel I could have learned as my degree- I want to do a PhD the experience confirmed my interest in research it did not put me off- Search for academic staff / ask your tutor _ Im interested in xxxxxx- IT wasnt easy often I was working 9-6pm without lunch!

    - Getting results was exciting often the practicals as part of our degree are just protocols experiments designed to give particular results this was real research

    Comments from Louise

Louise studied Nutrition at University of Nottingham and had 3 funded summer research placements from Rank Prize at the end of her 1

styear; from the Physiological Society at the end of her 2

    ndyear

and from Organix at the end of her 3rd

year. 2 were lab based and the Organix placement was aliterature review

    - You will often receive training often from a PhD student / postdoc in the lab but once youhave been tried you will need to be able to work independently. Campus can be quite quiet

over the summer when most students have disappeared- It can benefit your 3rd

year project you are technically more able; have an understandingabout research planning experiments and so on

    - Its great for your CV both in terms of work experience and research output- You can network and make new contacts-
