From Our Lay Reader Barbara.

Spring is a time of renewal, hope and new beginnings. We can begin to see the beauty all around once again in the flowers, the colours, and the textures of nature. Longer days are with us and we feel the suns warmth on our faces. My border in my garden is a carpet of red with red tulips and Geums, punctuated with the blue of forget- me- nots. My red current bush which I bravely cut back last year is showing signs of an abundance of fruit this year, so I am excited for the time I will see it covered in shiny red berries. A fitting metaphor for when Jesus said I am the vine, you are the branches. (John 15: 1-8). After we emerge out of darkness and having our wings clipped, will we emerge fresh ready to give an abundance of faith and love? Fruit that will shine out to all. We are beginning to conduct weddings and Baptisms, and once again our community will be able to show a living faith, that is both busy and active, bursting through like spring to bring fresh hope to all as we move into the warmer days of summer. Spirits are lifted as we now move forward to what we hope is a better future after feeling anxious for a long time. We are moving towards a date when society will be opening a little bit more and we shall all be feeling that we have more freedom and hopefully safety to enjoy this freedom due to the vaccinations.

Here at St. Andrew’s, we give thanks that our church has remained open throughout most of the pandemic, either through the church building or by online Zoom. This has been made possible by everyone’s commitment and support both through the ministry team and the congregation and we have witnessed how strong we are together. We have many changes ahead not least through the ‘Shaped by God’ initiative and I know that all of us will face these challenges with prayer and further commitment, supporting each other as we anticipate what lies ahead. We are Easter people who rejoice in the Living Christ; Here at St. Andrew’s may we outwardly show our community spirit, actively spreading the Good News that so many people need to hear, right now. Barbara.

ST. ANDREW'S IS GOING GREEN!

It's tragic and it's frightening, but we cannot deny that the world'sclimate is changing due to the effects of human activities. Unless weall make some changes in our lives, both as organisations andindividuals, catastrophic climate change will blight the lives of futuregenerations - precious children and grandchildren, throughout the world.

Our church, along with the Leicester Diocese, has signed up to theinter-denominational environmental charity A Rocha's Eco Church scheme, which uses an award system to help churches identify their areas ofstrength and those which require progress, to achieve a moresustainable church. The areas that we are asked to consider are: Land, Buildings, Community & Global engagement, worship and teaching andLifestyle.

By using A Rocha's questionnaire we have begun the process of looking atall aspects of church life in the context of the headings above. Wehave made considerable progress in some areas and in others we havesurprised ourselves by being further along the road than we had thoughtbecause small changes can often make a big difference. However, thereis still much to do and much that is do-able. We have agreed to moveforward by convening a working group, drawn from all parts of ourcongregation, to identify and initiate actions on what can be donereasonably easily, what we might realistically achieve and how we shouldmove forward on more difficult areas. We need volunteers to join theworking group. You do not need to be on the PCC or to be already activein other church committees etc. This is such an important area of ourchurch's work. If you have an interest in environmental issues andfeel you have something to contribute, please get in touch. You can email [email protected] or phone me on 2832978.

Anne Hayto.

Lay ReadershipLeadership of God’s People

Barbara Paget – Lay ReaderBrenda Spencer – Reader Emeritus (Retired and still very active within her Role).

One evening on our discussion group on Zoom, Brenda and I talked about Lay Readership.I had a couple of reasons why I wanted to do this-To highlight the role of readership, so our congregation would have a better understanding of what readers do within worship and beyond. To obtain feedback on our value as Readers within our Church today. To give insight of the role to those who may feel called to Reader Ministry. Since the meeting on Zoom we have all heard there is going to be significant changes within our parishes, which could mean that Readers may become more involved within the Church/Parish as a whole. So, I feel this is an appropriate time to inform our congregation of our Role. Some of our roles noted below have been understandably restricted due to COVID19.

As of October 2019, there are approximately 160 Readers working across the Diocese of Leicester.Reader Ministry has been around for over 150 years and is constantly evolving. It can take approximately four years on the Ministry Development Team to study for the role as a Lay Reader. Non- paid role. Voluntary. Readers share their roles whilst juggling family life as well as full and part time working and other pursuits.

Lay Reader Roles-Teaching Helping and leading Sunday Clubs for children and teaching through our preaching alongside Bible and Lent groups.BaptismMeeting and preparing the families for this important event and assisting at the service. Our aim is to keep in touch with the families either through ‘Teddies club,’ which we advise is there for the children or by other means.

Smile

A smile costs nothing, but gives a lot.It enriches those who receive it without making poorer those who give it.A smile takes only a moment, but the memory of it can last forever. No one is so rich, or so mighty, that they can get a long without a smile. And no one is so poor that they cannot be made richer by a smile.A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business and is thecounter sign of friendship.A smile brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to thesad and is nature’s best cure for troubleYet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen for it is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give a smile so give them one of yours as no one needs a smile so much as he who has no more of his own to give.

I went to the chiropodist , I'd never been before.I walked across the patio and knocked upon his door."Come in "he said "and take a seatLet's get started on your feet.Tell me now what is the problem?"" I can't get low enough to sort them.""Common problem at your age,But let's just soak them at this stage"Ooh that water was so warmIt soothed me gently and kept me calm.He set to work with clippers and fileAnd chatted along to me all the while. He pared and filed and trimmed each toe,And while he did I got to knowThat years ago when he was a ladI taught at the school that he was at.He was not in my class 'cause they were the youngestAnd he was much bigger so one of the oldest.Time passed by without any botherAs we talked about this and that and the other. He told me all about his mumFor she was the cook at the school back then.I remember the puddings ,oh they were the bestCourse not to forget about all the rest.By now my feet felt so much better,But the one last thing was the best thing ever. The cream on his hands was such a treatAs he rubbed and massaged it into my feet. When I went out I was walking on airBut best were the memories while I was there. So you never know where in whatever you doYou'll find good memories, just for you.

Note from the Treasurer

It is good that our Church building has been able to reopen for services again as the community cautiously emerges from the pandemic restrictions. However, the Church finances have been severely impacted through the crisis and can only recover over time with your help. The inability to hold fundraising events also means that the Organ Restoration Appeal is short of the restoration cost by approximately £7,500 at the time of writing. A Quinquennial inspection report on the church building is imminent which could identify further essential repair costs. Your Church is now approaching a situation where it will struggle to remain solvent. The Clergy and PCC are appreciative of your contributions and recognise that many of you have your own financial challenges at this time, but please maintain your giving and if anyone feels they can give more this would be very welcome. If you wish to make a donation then you can do so in the following ways:-

1. By direct debit through the Parish Giving Scheme. It is now possible for you to register and to manage your giving online at www.parishgivingscheme.org.uk or contact them by telephone on 0333 002 1260.

2. By cheque made payable to “St Andrews Parochial Church Council” and post to me at 67 Conaglen Road, Leicester LE2 8LE. If your donation is for the Organ Restoration Appeal then please make the cheque payable to “St Andrew’s Initiative Account”.

3. By a direct online BACS payment to the church account, St Andrews Parochial Church Council, account number 77068302, sort code 090151. For the Organ Restoration Appeal it should be to St Andrew’s Initiative Account, account number 44551186, sort code 090156. Please quote ref “donation” in all cases.

4. It is now also possible to donate to the Organ Restoration Appeal by debit and credit card online by following the link on the Church website.

Thank you very much for your support, John Robb
