rosa Rosa sits down to talk about her team on a

short break from overseeing the bottling of

every bottle of EO and Everyone product

here in our 40,000 square foot facility in San

Rafael, California. For the last five years Rosa

has taken a personal interest in the lives of

her team members. She’d worked at facto-

ries where personal problems were brought

to work and she’d seen the unhappy work

environments that created. Rosa resolved

that this place would be different. Rosa knew

from her experience of being a single mom of

four daughters that the surest path to suc-

cess was through communication and em-

powerment. She had her work cut out for her,

her employees had problems at home that

were significant and leaving those worries at

the door was a challenge. Rosa takes that

challenge head on. She begins every day with

music, dancing and hugs. She gives herself

and the team she oversees a chance to

shake off whatever may have happened

before they walked through that door. She

looks closely at her dancing, laughing group

every morning. “It’s easy to see the ones that

are still holding on to something,” she says,

“those are the ones I take aside. It doesn’t

take much for them to break and tell me

what’s worrying them. If there’s an answer,

we find it quickly. If not, we put it behind us

and move on. That’s how life is. Sometimes

we’re headed down a path and suddenly a

huge boulder just drops in front of us. That’s

when we get to see other paths that we may

have never taken.” She is psychologist,

mentor and friend to the people around her,

she is the matriarch of this family. The factory

is a bustling, happy and productive place.

People on the line come to her when product

looks less than perfect, there’s a sense of

ownership and pride in what is being made

here. “I show my people how to love life,”

says Rosa, “and that love goes into every-

thing we do. I tell them we don’t just come to

work for money, we come to work for a

sense of family...we come to work for love.”

There is an old Spanish legend that tells of a

benevolent witch who gives a man with six

children to feed six grapefruits.

Although confused as to how this could help,

he trusts the woman and brings the fruit

home. The next morning he woke to find the

grapefruits had become perfect, round orbs

of pure gold. Although not as precious as

gold, these amazing fruits are valued by both

traditional and modern medicine for their

countless health benefits.

Appropriately named the happy fruit,

Grapefruit has been ranked one of the

world’s healthiest foods. High in antioxidants

and vitamin C, grapefruit has been known to

help prevent certain types of cancer, fight the

common cold and even repair DNA.

Grapefruit has been linked to reduction

of cellulite, improving skin conditions like

acne, and stimulating the digestive and

lymphatic systems.

Grapefruit essential oil is as prized as the fruit

itself. This lighthearted and uplifting essence

is our reminder to be spontaneous and joyful.

Aromatherapists use this happy oil to awaken

body, mind and spirit. Diffusing grapefruit

essential oil is like breakfast in bed for the

spirit. This lovely oil is often used to assist the

user in shedding ego and regaining harmony

with the world around them.

When using grapefruit essential oil in

aromatherapy, be aware of how sudden

happiness can be and welcome that

spontaneous joy into your life. Grapefruit

mixes well with mint oils such as

spearmint and peppermint as well as

lavender, bergamot and cardamom.

Grapefruit & Campari Granita:

Serves 6

2 cups fresh ruby red or pink grapefruit juice, divided6 tablespoons sugar2/3 cup Campari1 tablespoon (packed) finely grated ruby red or pink grapefruit peelFresh Mint for garnish

In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup grapefruit juice and sugar. Heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Add the rest of the juice, Campari and grated peel. Carefully pour into a shallow baking dish and freeze overnight. Using a fork, scrape the frozen mixture into icy flakes and place directly into glasses. Garnish with fresh mint.

I: You mentioned the customer being ready, what do you mean by that?

S: Well, American women have been a little reluctant to embrace things like face oils. Pure plant oils are the cleanest and most regenerative way to get great skin texture and moisture, but if women won’t try it there’s no point in putting it on the shelves. There was this old fear that oil would make your face greasy or break out. In fact, synergistic oils actually help tone and balance skin, making oily skin less oily and dry skin less dry. It seems today’s customers are more savvy, more evolved, more open and aware and they’re ready for skin care that works.

I: You’re an expert on essential oils and you have a company that makes skin care for millions of people, so what do you use on your face?

S: (laughing) I use a Rose face oil that we made 20 years ago. Now it’s time has come. It will be part of the skin care line that we’ll be releasing this Fall. It works so beautifully. It’s a combination of 26 plant oils and essential oils. I think it’s the synergy of the essential oils with the plant based oils that makes it really special.

I: Talk to us about synergy.

S: I think synergy is so important. There are blends of essential oils that create a scent and effect that the individual notes just can’t reproduce. I see the same effect with people. For the last three years we’ve had an in house creative team. We have this group of creative individuals, each with their own talents, coming to work excited to be working with each other on our products. We end up with ideas that we would have never dreamed up alone. It’s synergy. I love it. These people love what they do, they respect and admire each other. The concepts that come out of this kind of collaboration are so exciting. It’s really inspiring to come to work these days.

I: Can you give us an example of what the team has helped create?

S: Well, yes. Basically everything we’ve created in the last three years. I suppose the biggest thing that’s happened is the launch of the Everyone brand. It’s been highly successful. Everyone has allowed more freedom with EO. We were hesitant to make EO too exclusive in past years because we wanted these plant based products to be available to as many people as possible. Now, with Everyone, we can start releasing the EO products that we’ve been dreaming of.

I: Want to give us a sneak peek at what to expect from EO?

S: Mmm, it’s going to be so lovely. We’ve just finished creating two body serums, those will be available this Spring. The next thing we’re working on is a face care line that we’ve scheduled for Fall. Luxury bath collections and advanced hair care are also being talked about. I’m most excited about finally being ready to create essential oil based perfumes. There really isn’t a non-synthetic fragrance in the luxury perfume market. We’re ready to create exclusive plant based scents. Our team is brainstorming on all of these ideas right now. Like I said, it’s inspiring to come to work these days.

Sitting down with Susan Griffin-Black, co-CEO of SWTC to talk about the evolution of the EO brand, skin care and synergy.

Issue: EO has been around for 20 years, where is it headed next?

Susan: Over the last twenty years, EO has grown both as a brand and a line of products. Plant chemistry has changed, and we have evolved with it. Plant based ingredients have progressed and are more readily available. I feel like the market has finally caught up to our original vision. We have had the dream of making skin care, luxury bath collections and perfumes from the purest essential oils. It seems like the customers are ready, the materials are there and we have the experience. It’s time to bring EO into the eco luxe world through the use of active, exotic pure essential oils.
