National Credit Union YOUTH Month was held during the month of April. The main purpose of YOUTH Month is to encourage kids to set up savings accounts, learn how to manage money and become more financially literate. The theme this year was ‘The Future is Your$’. Valley 1st held a coloring contest for Dairy Queen Gift Cards! Congratulations to our winners!
Enjoy the great outdoors. Do a quick search on state parks in your area. Chances are, there are a few parks that are an easy drive from you. Some parks might charge a small entry fee per carload, so do your research before you go. Pack a picnic lunch and your own snacks. Throw in a kite, a kickball, and a sketch pad for drawing birds, and you’re set for the entire day! Nothing beats the great outdoors!
Cook outside. You bought that grill for a reason, so use it. If you don’t have a grill, make a fire pit and roast some hot dogs. Cooking outside keeps your house cool and the AC bill low. Throw in some yard games, and you’ll create memories for a lifetime—something money can’t buy.
Host a lemonade stand. Now here’s a way to have fun, make money, and show your kids the value of hard work! Host a lemonade stand in your neighborhood, and let your kids manage it throughout the day! Plan out the details and gather your supplies a few days in advance.
Annual Meeting Valley 1st Community F.C.U. celebrated its 84th year with an annual meeting and banquet on Friday, April 26th. More than 200 members and staff attended the meeting, which was held at the Historic Summit Inn in Farmington. A beautiful table of hors d’oeuvres was presented as an appetizer and guests had a choice of filet or stuffed chicken breast as their entrée. The business meeting followed dinner. It was during the meeting Shirley Lazar and Mark Soboslai were both re-elected to the Board of Directors. Entertainment was provided by DJ Bill Lemon with Disc Inferno. Valley 1st gave away over $2,000 in cash and prizes to the members that attended! Next year let’s STRIVE to attend our BIG 85!! We’ve worked hard through the years, and thanks to you we THRIVE, so plan to join us when we turn Eighty-Five!

Certificates of deposit tend to have the highest interest rates among savings accounts. The downside is the loss of access to your money for a period of time. Something to consider when looking at investing or reinvesting your funds into a CD program is a laddering approach.
What is a CD Ladder?A CD ladder is a way of setting up multiple CD’s so they mature at staggered intervals. As opposed to repeatedly renewing a single CD that holds all your money, a CD ladder will get you higher interest rates without sacrificing accessibility. For example, if you had $20,000 to invest, you could put your entire amount into one (1) CD for 5 years, or you could spread your money out as follows:
$4,000 in a one-year CD$4,000 in a two-year CD$4,000 in a three-year CD$4,000 in a four-year CD$4,000 in a five-year CD After your one-year CD matures, you can reinvest that money in a new five-year CD and you can continue this pattern each year as maturities will occur. Eventually, your entire portfolio will be made up of five-year CD’s, one will be maturing every year, providing the option for reinvestment or moving the proceeds to your savings or checking account. The benefits of employing a CD Laddering program are:
• Increased accessibility: Your funds will become available to you at frequent intervals
• Flexibility: You decide the appropriate ladder arrangement that works for you.
• Better interest rates: You’ll have the ability to select longer-term CDs with higher interest rates while CD’s will be maturing on a regular basis.
• Peace of mind: If rates rise you will have funds to invest in a new CD. If rates fall, you still have funds invested in long-term CD’s that carry higher rates.
See us if you are looking to invest in a CD program. Your credit union has the CD options to provide the best alternative to your strategy.
