Summer Literacy Initiative Dear Parents/Guardians: It is my great pleasure to announce the commencement of Lakewood School District’s Summer Literacy Initiative! I’m excited to provide for all of our students grades K-12 the opportunity to reinforce their literacy skills throughout the summer months. Research shows that students who continue to read throughout the summer are typically not subject to what we call “slippage,” which is to say that they maintain or improve their literacy skills over the summer, rather than experiencing any kind of skills regression brought on by not reading for consecutive months. As with everything else in life, practice makes perfect, so I strongly recommend that every student feed his/her brain with some good books! For your convenience, the district provided lists of recommended books that are appropriate to grade-level and age, along with a series of activities through which students will build the skills and habits of mind that they need to be successful in their English Language Arts Literacy classes. To access these book lists and the accompanying assignments, please visit www.lakewoodpiners.org. There, you’ll find the following grade-level combinations: Kindergarten, Grades 1-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. While each grade-level has its own suggested reading list within these documents, the assignments are the same for each group of grade-levels. Please be aware that students have many choices to make. They have to select books that interest them and then they need to select assignments that are appropriate to their books. In order to receive credit for participating in the Summer Literacy Initiative, students must complete the appropriate activities to demonstrate their learning. These assignments must be brought to school and given to students’ English Language Arts Literacy teachers on the first day. Finally, the librarians at the Lakewood Branch of the Ocean County Library have been kind enough to volunteer to help our parents and students to find appropriate books and to guide students through the completion of their Summer Reading assignments. We’re very thankful that the librarians are so supportive of our Summer Literacy Initiative and I cannot stress enough that our librarians are terrific resources! If you’re interested in visiting the library, please note t he following: The Lakewood Branch of the Ocean County Library is located at 301 Lexington Avenue. The library can be reached via phone at (732) 363-1435 and their hours of operation are Monday - Thursday 9-9, Friday & Saturday 9-5, Sunday 1-5 (September - May). Please become a part of our Summer Literacy Initiative and encourage your child to read and to complete the appropriate assignments. Together, we can make a difference in your child’s education and we can inspire your child to love reading! Sincerely, Tracy Paolantonio Supervisor of Humanities, World Languages, Bilingual & ESL

Summer Literacy Initiative

Dear Parents/Guardians:

It is my great pleasure to announce the commencement of Lakewood School District’s Summer Literacy Initiative!

I’m excited to provide for all of our students grades K-12 the opportunity to reinforce their literacy skills throughout the

summer months. Research shows that students who continue to read throughout the summer are typically not subject to

what we call “slippage,” which is to say that they maintain or improve their literacy skills over the summer, rather than

experiencing any kind of skills regression brought on by not reading for consecutive months. As with everything else in

life, practice makes perfect, so I strongly recommend that every student feed his/her brain with some good books!

For your convenience, the district provided lists of recommended books that are appropriate to grade-level and age, along

with a series of activities through which students will build the skills and habits of mind that they need to be successful in

their English Language Arts Literacy classes. To access these book lists and the accompanying assignments,

please visit www.lakewoodpiners.org. There, you’ll find the following grade-level combinations: Kindergarten, Grades

1-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. While each grade-level has its own suggested reading list within these

documents, the assignments are the same for each group of grade-levels. Please be aware that students have many

choices to make. They have to select books that interest them and then they need to select assignments that are

appropriate to their books.

In order to receive credit for participating in the Summer Literacy Initiative, students must complete the

appropriate activities to demonstrate their learning. These assignments must be brought to school and given to

students’ English Language Arts Literacy teachers on the first day.

Finally, the librarians at the Lakewood Branch of the Ocean County Library have been kind enough to volunteer to help

our parents and students to find appropriate books and to guide students through the completion of their Summer

Reading assignments. We’re very thankful that the librarians are so supportive of our Summer Literacy Initiative and I

cannot stress enough that our librarians are terrific resources! If you’re interested in visiting the library, please note the

following: The Lakewood Branch of the Ocean County Library is located at 301 Lexington Avenue. The library can be

reached via phone at (732) 363-1435 and their hours of operation are Monday - Thursday 9-9, Friday & Saturday 9-5,

Sunday 1-5 (September - May).

Please become a part of our Summer Literacy Initiative and encourage your child to read and to complete the appropriate

assignments. Together, we can make a difference in your child’s education and we can inspire your child to love reading!

Iniciativa de conocimiento práctico de lectura

Queridos padres/tutores:

viernes y sábado 9-5, y domingo 1-5 (septiembre a mayo).

Sinceramente,

Tracy Paolantonio
