Greetings from BSHS President Dear Parents and Guardians, Greetings from Bishop Shanahan! May the peace of the Lord be with you and your families during these summer months. I hope that these summer days bring you an opportunity for some rest and relaxation after a very busy school year. The 2018-2019 academic year was a wonderful year and we are very pleased with the Shanahan students and all their successes. Extraordinary! We are very proud of our students who represent our school so well. GO EAGLES! Our recent graduation ceremony with Bishop Timothy Senior was truly one to remember. The students and their parents celebrated with great dignity and pride for a "job well done." With 100% college acceptance and $35,061,337 in scholarships, the Class of 2019 has left its mark on BSHS and we are grateful. Not only are we confident that they are academically and spiritually prepared for the next stage of life, but that they will also thrive as “People of God; People for Others.” Our newest Eagles are at the door and we look forward to welcoming the Class of 2023. We are still accepting applications for the fall, so please continue to be ambassadors and share the good news of Bishop Shanahan High School. Nothing makes us happier than to have a "full house" of energetic, enthusiastic teenagers. If you have questions regarding admissions, please contact Mrs. Carol Ferraro, [email protected] or 610-343-6206. All are welcome at BSHS! We extend a very warm welcome to all new and returning parents. We are happy to have you with us in the Shanahan community. Just as we encourage students to get involved, we ask that you do the same by being an active member of the BSHS Parents’ Association (BSPA), attend school events and explore opportunities to volunteer. Contact BSHS Advancement Director, Trish Kyle at [email protected] or 610-343-6255 to learn more. In the meantime, mark your calendar for An Evening at Shanahan, the annual auction and restaurant fair, on Saturday, March 28, 2020. This event is the biggest Shanahan social event of the year and you don’t want to miss it! Our school is open all summer from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, except July 4 and August 15. If you have any needs or questions, please do not hesitate to call us. Happy summer days! God bless you! Gratefully yours,

Sr. Regina Plunkett, IHM, ‘64 President of BSHS

Greetings from BSHS Principal

Dear Parents, Hello from Bishop Shanahan! Although the previous school year only just ended, it’s time to start thinking about the next school year ahead. The summer packet provides you with what you need to consider and perhaps act on in preparation for the coming school year. Please take the time to carefully read it and discuss it with your student because some of the information concerns what they should be doing. The summer break should be a time to rest and revitalize, but all play and no intellectual activity can make getting back in the swing of things in September challenging. Please encourage your student to do the summer reading and other summer assignments that some students have for their courses. Also, at the conclusion of the last assembly, I stressed to the students the importance of continuing their SAT prep work on Kahn Academy. This summer, all seniors, juniors and sophomores have a Kahn Academy summer assignment which will count as a Math and English grade. Details are included in the packet. If we can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are easily reached by phone or e-mail. The Main Office is open each day during the summer months from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM. School offices are closed on July 4 and August 15 (Feast of the Assumption). The school is not open during evening hours in the summer. I do hope that the summer is a time of togetherness, relaxation and rest for all our families. Best regards,

Mr. Michael J. McArdle Principal of BSHS

Greetings from BSHS Assistant Principal for Student Services Dear Parents, I hope you are all having a great summer! The purpose of this letter is to pass along a few changes and some reminders regarding the dress code, attendance policy and immunizations. Dress Code The dress code is, and has always been, an integral part of Catholic education and will continue to be strictly enforced; this will include random uniform inspections. The greatest number of infractions to the dress code result from untucked shirts, missing belts and IDs, sock and skort length, and incorrect shoes. Please review these items with your child and refer to the BSHS Handbook for details. Parking Parking is a privilege and students are expected to follow the appropriate traffic laws and have their Shanahan parking decal displayed on their vehicle. Any student who violates traffic laws, does not have a BSHS parking decal displayed, or who parks in an unauthorized space faces disciplinary action. Health Services All students who are entering 11th grade or are new students in Pennsylvania in any grade must have a copy of a physical on file in the health room. If your child has had a PIAA physical, please make a copy of it for the health room; the nurses do not have access to the Athletic Department records. Those students who did not turn in a copy of their physical prior to their Junior year must do so before their Senior year. The Emergency Medical Card will be mailed home with the student rosters. Please have the completed card returned to school by the first day. We are unable to treat students for whom we do not have a card on file. This will be the third year of the new immunization laws for all Pennsylvania schools. Students who do not have all the state mandated immunizations will not be permitted to attend school. This is a state law which impacts all public and private schools and must be adhered to by all Archdiocesan schools. Please note, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia does not accept religious exemptions from immunizations. Please refer to the BSHS website for details. Thank you for all you do in support of Catholic education and have a great rest of the summer. Regards, Mr. Robert F. Seefeldt Assistant Principal for Student Services

Greetings from BSHS Assistant Principal for Student Affairs Dear Parents,

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the summer with family and friends. I would like to take a moment to thank you for all of the support and cooperation during the school year for 2018-2019. It was a year of many blessings and great successes.

Most information is communicated, updated and published on our school website, shanahan.org.

The Calendar can be found in both the “About” and the “Parents” sections on the website and will be the most up-to-date resource to find information on what is happening in 2019-2020. We do not print the calendar, but there is a printable PDF version posted to the website.

The Student Life tab will bring you to the Student Affairs and Student Services links as well as information on clubs and activities.

I encourage all of our students to relax this summer, get their summer reading done, take up a hobby, and maybe consider doing something new this fall. We have many clubs and activities available for all students. Most clubs will have their first meetings within the first month of school; club meetings will be announced through the morning announcements which can also be found on the website under Quick Links on the front page.

The Fine Arts department has announced the Fall Musical: Rock of all Ages (High school version). Tickets will go on sale this fall through an online link at shanahan.org.

We hope the Freshman class will join us for the Freshmen Welcome Nights on either August 26th or 27th depending on their homeroom assignment. The first day of school for Freshmen is September 4th; for the Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors, September 5th; and all grades will report on September 6th. Homeroom begins promptly at 8:10 AM. Yearbook pictures will also be taken during this first week of school. Yearbook sales will be through Jostens and the link will be posted to the parents’ page once it is available in the fall.

I hope you have noticed our increased communications on social media, weekly Parent Newsletter and website. The Parent Newsletter will keep you informed of what is happening and also the great successes of the students. Our Director of Marketing and Communications, Meghan Cascarelli, has assisted this year in getting the information posted and communicated. If you have any information that you would like to share with the community please feel free to send her an e-mail at [email protected]. The school website is the best place to find out all of our current news and events.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me through e-mail. Have a blessed summer,

Mrs. Teresa Dellicompagni Assistant Principal for Student Affairs

Greetings from Fine Arts Department Fall Musical Information

We are pleased to announce that the Broadway Musical for the 2019-2020 school year will be Rock of Ages, The High School Edition. Show dates are: November 15, 16, 22, 23, 24. The annual Fall Musical has become a tradition not only among the Bishop Shanahan community, but within the greater Chester County community as well. It is a project that, unlike any other, involves the athletes, musicians, actors, dancers, artists, student leaders, scholars, and more. The state-of-the-art auditorium at Shanahan provides a facility second to none in which a project of this magnitude can be accomplished with relative ease. In order to meet the ambitious standards of our previous shows and support the academic requirements of Bishop Shanahan, an audition/rehearsal schedule will be carefully designed. BOTH PARENT AND STUDENT must visit shanahan.org/fallmusical to complete the application. Please be advised that a student’s previous academic success/failure will be a major factor in the casting process. This is done to prevent crisis from occurring during the rehearsal/performance times. In order to audition, all students must be registered at Bishop Shanahan High School. On JULY 17TH AT 7:00PM, we will have a PRE-AUDITION MEETING. During this meeting, we will introduce the staff, and review the show and audition expectations. Audition music will be available at this time. If you are not able to attend this meeting, music will be available online at shanahan.org/fallmusical. Auditions will be held on August 13th and 20th from 6:30 PM to 9 PM, with callbacks on September 3rd and 5th at 6 PM in the auditorium. Stay good and enjoy the summer, and we’ll look forward to seeing you on July 17th. Sincerely,

Mr. Chuck Keating Fine Arts Department Chair

Dear Students: I sincerely hope your summer vacation goes well. The busy school year and its many demands should be rewarded with some freedom from schedules and serious responsibilities. However, now is the time to make the necessary plans and design schedules that will allow next year’s continued success! This summer, the band will be rehearsing Wednesday evenings in July and August from 5 to 9 PM beginning July 17th. We will also rehearse the week of August 5th through 9th from 3 to 9 PM. Students need to bring sneakers, snacks, dinner, and bottled water. We will be rehearsing marching and playing during these rehearsals. Students with no experience are welcome. There is no charge for summer band. You need only to log onto shanahan.org/bands and fill out the form by July 5th. This will allow for the staff to make the necessary arrangements. There will be a BAND PARENTS MEETING on Wednesday, July 17th and Friday, August 9th at 7:00 PM. All Band Parents are welcome. Sincerely,

Mr. Chuck Keating Fine Arts Department Chair

Greetings from Fine Arts Department Choral Program & Summer Clinic Information

Dear Students: The Fine Arts Department of Bishop Shanahan High School is well known for the many opportunities offered to the students through performances. The choral program extends a special welcome to the incoming freshmen, as well as to any new and returning sophomores, juniors and seniors! We invite you all to participate in a choral workshop for both male and female voices. The workshop will introduce basic skills and serves to inspire and motivate students. No previous vocal experience is necessary. We will also be holding practices throughout the summer to introduce new music and give an opportunity for students to prepare for upcoming auditions for Ensemble and SHA-capella, our a capella ensemble. Please visit shanahan.org/choirs to register. The choral clinic will take place August 26th through 29th from 9 AM to 1 PM and the Ensemble and SHA-capella Clinic on July 23rd and 30th and August 13th and 20th from 5 PM - 8 PM. The following is a summary of the policies and activities of the Choral department for the 2019-20 school year: Mixed Chorus (90 voice ensemble) is a ½ credit class, for the year, open to any student who has the desire to sing. No experience necessary for participation. This chorus affords each student the opportunity to develop musically, intellectually and aesthetically. This choral group performs in the Christmas and Spring concert series at Bishop Shanahan High School and annually is in concert at different venues in New York City. Choral Ensemble (26 voice) is a choir whose members are chosen by audition. The advanced choral literature includes a wide variety of composers and styles. This choir performs in both the Christmas and Spring concert series of Bishop Shanahan High School, as well as, Trinity Church, Wall St., Saint Patrick Cathedral and Saint John Divine Church in New York City. This choir is featured at various diocesan and local events. SHA-capella (12 Voice) is an ensemble whose membership is gained by invitation only. Their repertoire is highly stylized a capella music and in the style of Pentatonix This ensemble performs in both the Christmas and Spring Concert series of Bishop Shanahan High School and at different venues throughout the year. Mixed Chorus choir classes are scheduled on Monday and Wednesday from 3:00-4:00. The Ensemble and Select Choirs rehearse after the Mixed Chorus. The times of the rehearsals are designed to meet the needs of scheduled performances and are posted at the beginning of each semester. Lessons are available for all voices (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). Each week, professional vocal instructors teach half hour private lessons during the school day on a rotating schedule. All students who meet the high standard are encouraged to audition for the All Catholic Choir (a festival choir). Students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade are also encouraged to audition for the PMEA District 12 Chorus. Those who qualify earn membership in the PMEA Region Chorus and PMEA All State Chorus. Sincerely, Mr. Chuck Keating Fine Arts Department Chair

Greetings from BSHS English Department Summer Reading Program Information

All Shanahan students are required to participate in the Summer Reading Program.

This year we are engaging in a One Book, One School initiative to bolster our students’ awareness of global issues.

The entire school is required to read the universal book. Students will take a Reading Counts test on

this book. The test can be taken during the summer on the days listed below, or when classes resume in the Fall. The required book will also be analyzed and discussed in their classes throughout the year. AP English students are provided a separate reading list by their AP English teacher.

Each grade also has a selection of books from which a student must choose two. Students must then read the books, and be prepared to take a Reading Counts test on them during the summer on the days listed below, or in the fall with their English class. The average of the three tests will count as a major test grade for the first quarter.

The tests will be administered three times during the summer for those students who choose to take them before school resumes in September. The dates will be: July 176h, August 6th, and August 21st.

All testing is conducted on campus. Freshmen may report for testing between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors may report between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.

Drivers are encouraged to wait since each test should take only 15 minutes.

It is highly recommended that students take notes while they are reading each of the three books. Suggestions for note-taking include:

Note the time, setting, action, plots, turning points, and themes of each book. Write down each character’s name as he or she is introduced and describe each one. As you

read, indicate the importance of each character. Summarize what happens in the book. What are the important conflicts?

Put down a few statements or ideas from each book that are especially noteworthy or meaningful. Include page numbers.

Is the ending satisfactory? What are the implications of the ending and its effect on the main character? How much do you relate to him or her?

To what extent do you think that the book is worthwhile? Did it help you to gain some insight or to come to a greater understanding of yourself in anyway?

Sincerely, Stephanie Belefonte English Department Chair

Greetings from BSHS English & Math Departments Khan Academy Information

Dear Parents: This summer in an effort to keep the students’ engaged in critical thinking, we are requiring students to complete SAT practice skills based questions on Khan Academy during the months of July and August. We are asking that within each grade, 10 skill sets be completed for Math and 10 skill sets be completed for Critical Reading/Writing in both the month of July and August. Students will be monitored for completion, effort and improvement in July for 50% of an assessment and in August for the other 50% of that assessment. This will count as a grade in the first quarter for both Math and ELA respectively. Ms. Belefonte and Mrs. Moore will be monitoring your child’s progress each month. The first 10 skills of each subject must be completed by July 31st and the second set between August 1st and August 31st. Failure to complete any, some or all of these activities in either month could affect this grade. It is our hope to continue to strengthen these skills throughout the summer. Please find set -up instructions at shanahan.org/khanacademy. Sincerely, Ms. Stephanie Belefonte Mrs. Janet Moore English Department Chair Math Department Chair
