  • MYRTLE HILL FARM $500 HUNTER DERBY

The courses for the Hunter Derby are designed to more closely resemble the hunt field with fewer groundlines, coops, oxers, ditches, gates, banks, walls, hedges, natural foliage and more. The

approaches to jumps vary greatly, from short to long to serpentine, and are negotiable. Riders are rewarded for choosing more difficult routes, which include optional jumps. They differ from current hunter classes primarily in the construction of the fences and the track between them.

You must impress the Judge with your horse’s jumping style and the brilliance of the round. In normal hunter classes, horses are marked down for behavior like shaking heads after a jump or swapping leads. In the Hunter Derby however, these behaviors are allowed as the horse showing a little life. Balance, straightness, and good jumping style are still important, but horses who are daring, athletic, and show some expression will be rewarded. As this is a schooling show, both courses will be judged by a single judge (r) rather than the standard team of judges (R & r/R).

Formal attire (shadbelly, dark coat, white/buff breeches, and white shirt) recommended but not required. Horses will show in traditional hunter tack including snaffles or pelhams and double bridles. Braiding of manes and tails is optional. Standing martingales are permitted whereas running martingales are NOT permitted.

Prize money to be paid to a minimum of 12 places as follows:

    1st – 30% ($150) 7th – 4% ($20)

    2nd – 22% ($110) 8th – 3% ($15)

    3rd – 13% ($65) 9th – 3% ($15)

    4th – 8% ($40) 10th – 2% ($10)

    5th – 6% ($30) 11th – 2% ($10)

    6th – 5% ($25) 12th – 2% ($10)

If there are fewer than 12 entries in the class, prize money must be paid according to the breakdown through the last placing entry. Any remaining prize money not awarded due to fewer than 12 entries may be split and awarded equally to all entrants that place in the class.

  • Myrtle Hill Farm Hunter Classic Round I The first round shall be judged on performance, hunter pace, jumping style, quality and substance, and movement. After the Judges base score is given, one point will be added for each high option fence jumped. The Option Bonus Score of one additional point must be awarded even if there is a refusal, rail down or loss of good jumping style at that higher height option fence, providing that the horse-and-rider combination does jump the higher height option fence. (Maximum of four points.)

10 jumps minimum with fence height ranging from 3’-3’3”. A 2″ difference is required for the back element of all oxers. Four 3’3” fences in the course, set as option jumps. Ground lines not to exceed 18”. For appropriate jumps, no ground line is acceptable. At least one in-and-out, one bending line, one long approach and one line with an unrelated distance.

Myrtle Hill Farm Handy Hunter Round II The second round shall be judged on performance, hunter pace, jumping style, quality and substance, movement, handiness and brilliance of pace. Handiness is defined as ground saving movement without adversely affecting performance or style. Brilliance of pace is defined as a faster pace than ordinary, without sacrificing performance or style. Handiness is taken into account in the Judges’ base score. After the Judges’ base score is given, one point will be added for each high option fence jumped. The Option Bonus Score of one additional point must be awarded even if there is a refusal, rail down or loss of good jumping style at that higher height option fence, providing that the horse-and-rider combination does jump the higher height option fence. (Maximum of four points.) The top 12 entries from the first round will return for the second round. If 12 or fewer show in the first round, all horses will return for the second round.

8 jumps minimum with fence height ranging from 2’6”-3’3”. A 2″ difference is required for the back element of all oxers. Four 3’3” fences in the course, set as option jumps. Ground lines not to exceed 18”. For appropriate jumps, no ground line is acceptable. The course should simulate riding over hunt country & must have a minimum of 2 handy options such as: tight turns, different tracks, clever options for jump approaches, pen type obstacles, hand gallop a jump, trot a lowered obstacle not to exceed 2’6” in height, halt and/or back.

All ties in all rounds will be broken by the base score (before adding height bonus points) of that round. All ties for overall first place will compete in a jump-off round. The final score from each round will be added to obtain the overall total for each horse.
