Welcome to the Summer newsletter, it’s so lovely to be able to sit in the garden and enjoy a warmer breeze. As our needs have outgrown the space of the building we have had to take positive action. To this end and to enable us to realise our vision for the future we are starting a capital appeal to raise £550,000 to raise the roof of the building, making more space for workshops, better toilets facilities and meeting rooms. Plans are already in progress for the Summer Fair on 28

th July and I look forward to seeing everyone there. We

are also looking for volunteers to join a fundraising team to assist with all aspects of our fundraising to bring about the vision we have.

Carers Pamper Evening

Our carers group is an opportunity to meet other

people in the same situation, to value each

other’s ideas and experiences, to have a break

and get practical information.

Fundraising enabled us to treat members of our

carers group to have their hair styled, nails

painted, facials and a massage, whilst we

looked after their partners and children.

Our carers group meet every month.

If you would like more information

please call Jamie 01743 365565

Volunteers Week

At Headway Shropshire we are very

fortunate to have an amazing group of

volunteers that dedicate their time every

week throughout the year, at our

rehabilitation centre and share their skills

with our clients. To show our appreciation

we treated them to lunch.

The Headway Shropshire garden has had a much needed garden makeover in May. The ‘DIY SOS’ style event has come into fruition following Headway Shropshire’s call for help to improve our outside facilities for clients – including adding a new sensory garden, vegetable garden and rockery, new seating area, addressing accessibility issues for wheelchairs and giving the whole garden area a much needed facelift, such as painting, weeding and mending fences etc.

A team of volunteers, from BT came to Headway Shropshire to assist for the day, offering the manpower and time, to ensure the work was completed. Local businesses also rallied round the charity’s call for help, offering an excellent range of resources, such as plants, trees, gravel, rocks and paints, as well as their expert landscape and planting advice.

Jean Robinson, Headway Shropshire CEO, added ‘The garden provides a vital source of rehabilitation and enjoyment for our centre’s clients. Improving the accessibility to the garden is important so all clients can enjoy the resource. Due to the generosity of the BT team, our volunteers and all the local businesses who have all been amazing with their kind donations, the garden can now have its much needed makeover’.

Headway Shropshire would like to thank the following businesses for their kind support of time and resources:

BT Topnotch Gardens Powys & Marches Stone Supplies

Travis Perkins Woodland Timber Love plants at Salop Leisure

Wickes Ludlow Plant Centre Boys & Boden Severn Trent

On 17 March 2016, we held our most successful conference yet, ‘Surviving

Brain Injury - The Journey’, which took place at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury.

I am very proud to be able to write and reflect on the event having been one of

the main organisers.

Approximately 250 delegates and exhibitors attended from across the county and beyond from

charities, health, and social care organisations. It was fantastic to see a number of clients and

other delegates who had sustained a brain injury, attending with their families and support

workers, all interested to hear and discuss how brain injuries affect people’s lives.

Amongst the speakers were Dr Nicholas Crombie for Air Ambulance, Sr Aisling McLaughlin from

the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr Andrew Worthington and Jayne Brake from Headwise, Neil Da-

vies at Lanyon Bowdler, Alison McNamara of AJ Case Management, Jean Robinson of Head-

way Shropshire and Pauline Holbrook at the Movement Centre.

A proportion of the ticket sales have been donated to Midlands Air Ambulance, Headway

Shropshire and The Movement Centre.

If anyone would like a copy of our information booklet ‘Understanding Brain Injury’ or would like to speak to one of our Brain Injury Specialists then please get in touch with us on 01743 280280 or email us at [email protected]
