A MESSAGE FROM JOE PIPER A new year is upon us and with 2014 ahead, it’s a great time to start planning your learning journey. As Victoria’s largest provider of adult education delivering over 900 short courses annually, CAE has brilliant ways to engage with like-minded people who appreciate the joy of learning something new.

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s vibrant arts and café precinct, CAE provides an exciting range of short and accredited courses that will inspire, excite and engage you. Start your summer with Bird Watching for Beginners (p11), learn to spin a yarn (p15) or Creating Contemporary Soft Toy Characters with Cat Rabbit (p13). While creative personal skills, like languages, photography, cooking or arts and craft are also available.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION AND SKILLSWelcome to the CAE 2014 Summer Guide.

With on-going changes to Australia’s economic and industrial landscape, understanding the skill level required to ensure a job ready workforce is essential to Victoria’s success, both nationally and internationally. The ability to develop and maintain a highly skilled work force is integral to meeting this need; skills training and support are essential. The Victorian Government recognises this and is committed to delivering a robust and sustainable education and training system for Victoria.

In the spotlightEd Weiss joined CAE in 1978 and has since lectured on an ongoing basis, and has seldom repeated a subject. He was president of the Tutors Association, Board Member, introduced location lectures, including Botanic Garden walks, and led CAE tours to Russia, Mexico and East Africa. Ed is a specialist in tropical agriculture, worked as a consultant to the UN(FAO), Ford Foundation and international companies. He has published six text books for university students and co-authored several more, including three on his experiences in Africa between 1949-1966. Ed also founded two successful businesses after coming to Australia in 1971. Ed continues to lecture for CAE and U3A.
