Eat five or more fruits
and vegetables every
day.
Fruits and vegetables provide
vitamins, minerals, and other
nutrients that are important for
growth and development.
Different cooking styles can change
the flavor and texture of your food. If
you do not like carrots raw, that does
not mean you will not like them
roasted!
Some healthy ways to prepare your
vegetables are steaming, sautéing,
boiling and roasting.
Not every food is love at first bite. It
can take up to 7 to 10 tries before
your child will like a new type of
food, so keep trying it! You never
know which new food might become
their new favorite snack.

Healthy Hands
Handwashing is an
easy, cheap, and
effective way to
prevent the spread
of germs and keep
kids and adults
healthy. Teach
kids five easy steps for
handwashing. 1. Wet your hands
2. Lather the soap 3. Scrub your
entire hands 4. Rinse clean 5. Dry.
Make handwashing fun by turning
it into a game or singing a favorite
song while you scrub!

Schools across the county have partnered with the Florida
Department of Health in Okaloosa County to present Healthy
Okaloosa Schools. Together we are making Okaloosa County a
Healthier Place to Live, Learn, Work and Play!
Limit recreational
screen time to
two hours or less
each day.
A great way to reduce screen
time is by getting outside! The
backyard provides a wonderful
ecosystem for kids to study.
Search your plants and yard for
living creatures, such as insects,
birds, fungi, worms, and more!
Record the wildlife you find and
keep track of how it changes
over time. This is a great way to
discover our environment.

Be physically
active at least
one hour every
day.
Kids and teens need 60 minutes
of physical activity every day to
stay healthy!
Some easy ways to get more
activity into your daily routine
are:
• Take a family walk around
the neighborhood
• Have a family dance party in
your living room
• Toss or kick a ball around in
the yard
• Do morning stretches or yoga
• Play tag in your backyard
Good brushing habits keep your teeth
healthy! Brush for at least 2 minutes, 2
times a day. That is just 4 minutes every
day. And never share a toothbrush! This
spreads germs and could make you and
the person you share with sick.

Eliminate use of and exposure to
tobacco and nicotine
products.
Smoking is one of the worst
things you can do to your
body. Smoking can cause cancer and
heart disease. It can also make your
breath smell bad, turn your teeth yellow,
make you sick more often, make it hard
for you to play sports, and empty your wallet (cigarettes and
tobacco products are expensive). Do yourself a favor and don’t
start!

popsicles sticks or molds that have

It can be hard to get kids to drink water, but it is very
important during the summer months. Our bodies lose
water through breathing, sweating, and digestion. Use
these tips to help your kids stay hydrated and energized:
• Use frozen fruit instead of ice cubes
• Flavor water with fruits like cucumbers, lemons, and limes
• Give your child his or her own “special” drinking cup
• Set up a reward system for drinking water Source: Fresh From Florida
