I am always amazed at the work our bereavement team does with

A Fun-Filled 4th of July in Ocean City, MDCongratulations to Peg Baliko for purchasing the winning ticket for the one

week vacation in Ocean City, MD at the Ocean High over the Fourth of July weekend. Thanks to Laurie Lee and Mark Mueller for donating this special gift to Hospice. Hospice collected $1,130 in raffle tickets. Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser!

with a horse, and through painting, could creatively express their feelings through this living art project. The horses stood so patiently while the children painted some of them from nose to tail! Diane facilitated the children’s grief work by spending time with each of them as they painted. When their projects were completed they were able to parade the horses for the rest of the group to admire. New to camp this year was Melanie Lohwater, OTR-L who is a licensed Occupational Therapist from Personalized Therapy, LLC. Melanie spent time with the children teaching them positive coping and stress management skills. Melanie taught the kids how to use these skills when they find themselves angry at the loss of their loved one. Another special surprise was the Double Deuce! Paul Collona (father of Tara Wood our Assistant Director) drove his tanker to Sotterley and

sprayed the kids—and some of us! The kids had a blast slipping and sliding on the 70 feet of plastic that Paul set up. The cold water was much appreciated on a 90 degree day! Camp concluded with a special butterfly release. The children launched beautiful monarch butterflies in memory of their loved ones. We almost had to let the butterflies go in the barn as a huge storm blew through right before the release. Just as families were arriving to participate in the release the rain stopped and the sun came out. Many tears were shed by all that participated in this moving ceremony. I would be remiss if I didn’t say a special thank you to the Tall Timbers Optimist Club. They raised $5000 at their Spring Dinner/Dance and donated it all to support bereavement care of children. Camp Sunrise would not have been the quality experience it was if not for the support of the Optimists.

Hospice of St. Mary’s invites you to celebrate the holidays and participate in the 4th Annual Festival of Trees to be held on

December 3, 2011 at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, 24005 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, MD. This year’s theme is “Holiday Memories”. Please consider becoming a Festival Sponsor by purchasing a tree or participate as a vendor, presenting your merchandise and wares for all to see and purchase. Memorial Brick Campaign

A recent memorial will soon be seen as an herb garden on the front lawn of the Hospice House.

Leading to the garden will be a lovely brick walkway. Plans are underway to launch a Memorial Brick Paver campaign where personalized bricks will be available as a memorial for a loved one for a donation to Hospice. Purchase of a brick will enable both the donor to honor a loved one and Hospice House to provide continued excellent care to our patients. Specific information will be available in the next edition of this newsletter.

The poignant theme of sailing away is captured by the peaceful fountain in the front circle of the Hospice House. The fountain and plantings were made possible through a generous donation from Phil and Judy Christie in honor of and in memory of their parents. The teak bench was donated by St. Mary’s Hospital nurses and provides a quiet place for patients and families to enjoy the surroundings.

News From the Volunteer OfficeBy Katy Crowell, Volunteer Coordinator

Many Thank You’s to Our Wonderful Volunteers!Spring has been a very busy time for Hospice of St. Mary’s with many fund raising events, and these events wouldn’t be the success that they were without the support of our wonderful volunteers! Our 16th Annual Run and Fun Walk for Hospice was held on April 16th, and the volunteers came out in full force to ensure that we had another successful event. We had more volunteer course marshals’ who were along the route working with our local Sheriff’s Deputies, and we had a lot of positive feedback from the extra folks directing the runners and walkers. We are always looking for ways to improve, so if you have any feedback, we would love to hear from you. Our “world famous” brunch provided a wonderful variety of great food, which was donated/purchased from many of our local stores and restaurants. Special thanks to Janet Padgett and Anne and John Richards for all their help, along with the many other volunteers that helped them with the brunch. The race would not be the success it is without Jim Dicus, Jamie Thomas, Jeff Thomas, Brian Buker and Mike Dailey. These men have worked this event for the past 16 years, and are the reason it is as successful as it is! The Spring Fling was held on May 1 in Leonardtown, and once again the volunteers came out in force to help solicit donations from people attending the event. It was a picture perfect day, and the crowds were very generous in supporting Hospice with their donations. May 7 was the Kentucky Derby Party at Sotterley, and without the help of all the wonderful volunteers who put in countless hours preparing for this day, our event wouldn’t continue to grow and become the “event” of the spring in St. Mary’s County! It was a beautiful day, and a great time was had by all. The Rockfish Tournament was held on May 14th – another beautiful day in St. Mary’s County, and the fisherman came out and helped raise more money for Hospice. Special thanks to our volunteers who were the “witnesses” to the weighing of the fish as they came in.

New Volunteers In May, we held two more Boot Camp Volunteer Training classes, and a total of 17 volunteers and new staff members attended the sessions. We have some very enthusiastic graduates from these classes who are very

anxious to get started volunteering at Hospice. They are interested in patient care, cooking, helping in the office and some fund raising work. I look forward to working with each of you very soon!!! Check out their graduation pictures in this newsletter, and be sure to welcome them next time you see one of them. More classes will be held in the August/September timeframe. If you know of anyone who might be interested in volunteering at Hospice, or would like more information, please have them contact me at 301-994-3075 or [email protected]

Volunteer Recognition We are going to do things a bit differently this year. Instead of the luncheon that has been typically held in May, we are going to have an Open House in November, during National Hospice Month, so that we can have a more social gathering and allow the volunteers and staff to mingle a bit more. Date and location will be announced very soon!

Cooks Needed for the Hospice House I am going to start another recruitment effort for volunteer cooks at the Hospice House – we have had some attrition and our staff would be so grateful to get more volunteers to fill in many of the gaps on our schedule. If you think you might be interested, or would like more information, please contact me. We can talk about what is involved, and you could also have the opportunity to “shadow” one of our volunteer cooks to find out if this is something that you would like to pursue.

Volunteer Waterers Thanks to all the volunteers who have been so kind to come and water our grounds and help to keep our plantings alive! It looks like we are going to have another “hot” summer, so the time that these kind people have been putting in is so appreciated! Many of the Master Gardeners in St. Mary’s County have also contributed their expertise and time to help make the Hospice House grounds look so pretty. Thanks to all of you!!!!

Hospice Cookbook Our cookbook is in full swing – we have received many delicious recipes that are being typed for the upcoming cookbook! If you have any recipes that you would like to share, please send them to me either by email at mary_

[email protected] or put them in the mail to me at Katy Crowell, Volunteer Coordinator, Hospice of St. Mary’s, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650. It is our goal to have the cookbook off the presses for holiday gift giving!

Meet our New Volunteers!

Become a Hospice Volunteer

Our volunteers are vital members of the Hospice of St. Mary’s team, helping the families we serve deal with illness, grief and loss. Whether you choose to work directly with patients and families or choose to participate in any other

Hospice of St. Mary’s volunteer opportunity, you’ll be making a difference in someone’s life. Many of our volunteers were introduced to hospice through the death of a family member and understand firsthand the value of hospice care. Volunteers consistently report that helping the terminally ill through hospice is not about dying but about living.

Darting for Hospice Once again – our partners at TRICODA (Tri-County Dart Tournament Association) lead by Jimmy Dillow - hosted a fabulous tournament the last week of February to benefit Hospice of St. Mary’s. Already raising over $18,000 for hospice the previous three years – TRICODA added an additional $5,000 to top their donations at $23,000. Hosted at the Holiday Inn in Solomon’s Island, the tournament starts with “luck of the draw” game on Friday – and proceeds to various events until Sunday evening. Major sponsors include: Coors, VFW2632 and AMEWAS and about 20 other sponsors. Thank you to Jimmy Dillow and all the darters in TRICODA.

Spring Fling Car Show on the Square in LeonardtownSome of the finest classic cars in Southern Maryland were on display May 1, 2011 for public viewing. Proceeds from the ‘bucket brigade’ brought in a total of $2,585 for Hospice of St. Mary’s. Hospice of St. Mary’s Board of Directors Ambassador Vince Merz accepted a check in the amount of $7,000 from the Rod & Classic Car Club at their July 4 monthly meeting. Thanks to everyone who made this event such a success!

Added Comfort at the Hospice HouseThe Hospice House now has a beautiful pergola on the back deck providing some shade for patients and families. The pergola was made possible through generous donations from St. Mary’s Garden Club, St. Mary’s Hospital Nursing Staff, and from contributions made “In Loving Memory of Patricia and Bill Sloat”.

Master Gardeners Receive Baywise Certification!

The Master Gardeners designed and planted a beautiful rain garden in what was our storm water management pond. The area is now filled with Red Maple, River Birch, and Fringe trees; Arrowood Viburnum and Inkberry shrubs, Black-eyed Susans, Monarda (Beebalm - two kinds,) Iris, Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), Goldenrod (Solidago), Lobelia Cardinalis, and ornamental grass plants. The garden plan was submitted to the University of MD Extension Service and was awarded the certification last week. Currently the bee balm is all in bloom and covered with butterflies and honey bees! Many thanks to all the Master Gardeners who work so hard to make our grounds beautiful for patients and their families.

16th Annual Run and Fun Walk for Hospice

On April 16, 2011 the 16th Annual Run and Fun Walk for Hospice

was held in Historic Leonardtown, Maryland. The usually large crowd was a bit smaller this year due to the forecasted inclement weather, but a hearty group of runners and walkers turned out to support this signature hospice fundraiser and, luckily, the rain held off until after the start of the run/fun walk. After the event, participants feasted on the fabulous buffet brunch that makes this run/fun walk so unique while the winners of the 5K and 10K runs received their medals. Hospice of St. Mary’s would like to thank all of the local businesses and contractors who support this event each year. We would also like to thank the town of Leonardtown for being such an outstanding host location for the Run and Fun Walk for Hospice. Finally, we would like to thank each of the participants, and their supporters, who showed up to run and walk and to raise money in support of hospice services. Plans have already begun for next year’s Run and Fun Walk for Hospice. Be sure to save the date of April 14, 2012. We look forward to seeing you at the 17th Annual Run and Fun Walk for Hospice.

Wayne Davis, of W. M. Davis, Inc., presents a check to Kathy Franzen, Hospice Director and Katy Crowell, Volunteer Coordinator, as a matching donation for monies his employees raised for the 16th Annual Run and Fun Walk for Hospice.

My Cause Water

Drink water and help Hospice of St. Mary’s!My Cause bottled water company will

3. Select Hospice of St. Mary’s.

Hospice of St. Mary’s depends on community support from individuals and organizations in order to continue to provide care and support to those who are in the final stage of their lives, and also to provide support to those in our community who have been touched by a loss.

Hospice of St. Mary’s wishes to extend a heartfelt thank-you to two wonderful individuals for their generous donations in honor of their loved ones:

Ms. Anne M. Margolis, sister of Jerome McCabe, donated $5,000 to Hospice to specifically go towards the continuing education for Hospice staff.

Mrs. Maureen Owens, sister of John Joseph Riley, donated $5,000 to the Hospice House

for the purchase of two needed electric lifts for our patients. Mrs. Owens also

wishes that any remaining funds be spent on a scanner, camera, and even a coffee/tea maker for the Hospice House. Again, many

thanks to all for your support!
