Summer Fete 2013

2 - Parish Fete News

The parish Fete was held on 29th June in very good weather and was very well attended.Catering was by Victorian Mobile Catering from the Lizard who provided burgers hot dogs andcold drinks as well as baked potatoes - and a donation towards our funds - whilst our ownkitchen provided pasties, cakes and other items. We also had, for the first time, a number ofclassic cars present including a contingent of local MG owners, several tractors in show-roomcondition and a steam roller. The Committee would like to express their thanks to all who gavetheir time to support this growing event. The profit was, as usual split 3 ways with the Gwennap

Parish Council, the Friends of Cusgarne schooland the Fete Committee each receiving justover £300.Readers will recall from the last magazine thatthis was the parish’s 30th Anniversary Fete. Itwas therefore felt appropriate for it to beopened by Mr Tony Walker, who with otherscame up with the idea of a parish playing fieldand changing rooms and without whose effortsthese facilities would probably not now exist.

We also had the Fowey Town Criercirculating the field.

Thank you to Lanner Silver Band, the schoolchildrens performance, the stationaryengines, and the MG, tractor and otherowners who brought their vehicles along.

The committee would like to thank everybodywho contributed with their time and financiallyto make the day a success.

Crofthandy Village Hall

We have all enjoyed a good summer so far this year at least compared to the last two or three. Our main eventshave been well attended and have brought many people together to enjoy common interest. The annual ClassicMotorcycle show was a great day with many bikes trikes and quads of all makes and sizes, from vintage to brandnew. There was a very strong showing for the British bike class this year, well done to all.

The village Barbecue was also blessed with good weather and lots of people. It was fitting that this was the firstevent to use our new patio. Although there is still a little paint and plaster needed to be finished, we are all veryproud of the hard work that has been done. Also on the improvement front we have managed to get the accessto our field surfaced.

Future projects will include lighting and some outside furniture for the patio when funding is available. As wellas our regular classes of keep fit and Pilates from September we have an art class beginning, more info as I getit on this one sorry it’s a bit sketchy.

6 - L J Richards and Football Club News

One of the Oldest Family Businesses in the Parish

L J Richards & Sons garage at Point Mills is a family business that dates back to 1921 – although it wasn’t a garageback then. In 1921, Fred Richards of Perranwell Station established himself as a dealer in coal. He rapidly builtup a good trade mainly in house coal. In 1927 he expanded his interests by opening a garage at the same PointMills premises. He was so good at repairing his own ‘fleet’ that others asked him to repair their vehicles, and a

garage was born!

An article about him in “Town & Country News” in 1932reported him dealing in steam coal, anthracite and coke, as well as house coal. It reported that the garage side ofthe business also grew rapidly stocking all proprietary petrols and oils as well as having his own petrol electricplant for generating light and for recharging batteries. The picture above (apologies for the quality) shows coal being loaded onto one of his lorries for delivery in thearea.

Fred’s brother Louis (LJ Richards) then took over the reins and theblock building replaced the sheds, with Polrose, the domestic housealongside, being partly used as the garage showroom.

In 1945 “LJ” put the running of the business in the hands of his sonDerrick, who is still involved today, although after almost seventyyears he is entitled to let his sons take some of the strain. The garage stopped selling fuel in 2010 – the supermarkets wereselling it to the public cheaper than LJ Richards could buy it in.However, it is still a fully functioning vehicle repair and MOT centreand along with the adjoining hairdressers and bakery, keeps PointMills on the map.

8 - Cottage Industries and Football Club

Gwennap may be a quiet rural parish, but there is still a lot going on out there to shout about. We have touched on some in previous editions - Rippons Bakery and James Barry Hairdressers, both opened inrecent times at Point Mills, are examples of small successful local enterprises – and we would like to tell our readersabout your “Cottage Industry”. Let us know about what you do because it’s probably the only way we’ll get to know –we can then tell everyone.

hubble PRESERVES is based in the home of Sue Hubble at Cusgarne where she has lived with her husband Bobfor the past 22 years. Sue was a TV Production Manager in London and Bristol before she and Bob had their family. When their children became more independent Sue decided a change of direction was needed. She had a goodknowledge of cooking and it was also something she enjoyed, so three years’ ago hubble PRESERVES was born, albeit on a small scale, at a school Christmas Fair.

This third year has seen production already double last year’s output and her artisan products can be found locally atPicnic Cornwall, Church Street, Falmouth; ‘Holefoods Deli at Mousehole; St Agnes Bakeryand Lavender Deli in Truro as well as online at www.hubbles.co.uk and direct sales tothe public.

Earlier this year, Sue entered her “Mighty fine Marmalade” at the World’s OriginalMarmalade Competition and it won a Gold award from over 1,000 entries! Marmaladeseven came from overseas and the judging panel included representatives from Fortnum& Mason, River Cottage and Sainsbury’s Magazine. What a result for a first-time entry!

Despite the growth and success, hubbles PRESERVES is very much a ‘homemade’business, with everything taking place in her domestic kitchen using the age-old traditionalpreserving pan and spoon. Demand for products sees her working every day, but it is stilla labour of love. All products are what Sue personally likes ensuring a high level of qualitycontrol!

The range available is extensive, with nine Jams & Curds, four Marmalades & Mincemeatsand eleven Chutneys, Relishes and Jellies. Quite some “Cottage Industry”, and madeusing local ingredients wherever possible.

If your attempts are like mine, Sue has nothing to fear. One batch might rival superglue, another just won’t set. Suestresses the importance of hygiene, especially when using old jam jars. Sterilise everything and keep to the balanceof ingredients in your recipe.

Sue also recently had an unannounced visit from Food Hygiene inspectors (she scored top rating) - another reasonto keep my efforts in my larder.

Dear Residents

It was good to meet so many people at the village fete which celebrated its 30th year it was a great afternoon and yes I didbuy lots of good quality bargains.

You may have recently driven past Cusgarne Community School and seen the newly painted zig-zag lines on the roadoutside, these safety works had been carried out following a meeting I had with the Head Teacher Wendy Nicholls andthe staff at the school, and parking outside of the school was a real issue. I then arranged a site meeting with Cormac tosee what could be done to resolve the problem. I am delighted that the necessary works were carried out so quickly.Favourable comments from the Head Teacher demonstrated how much these safety measure were needed andappreciated.

You may have read in the local papers or seen on the television the concerns that I have raised regarding the new roadlayout near the Plume of Feathers at Scorrier, having witnessed for myself vehicles trying to access the A30 the wrongway and instructed Cornwall Council, the Highways Agency and the police to carry out a road safety audit. Whilst theywere conducting the audit 3 vehicles including a large mobile home had driven past them to try and access the A30 sliproad. Luckily they saw the last sign which was a No Entry sign. When questioned by the police they explained that theirSatellite Navigation Systems were directing them in this direction and they had not been looking at the new signs that hadbeen put into place. I then had additional signage put up which clearly states “NEW ROAD LAYOUT IGNORE SAT NAV”,unbelievably drivers are still not seeing these signs and my concern is that a serious accident will happen. So if you doexit the A30 at Scorrier please take care.

As a Cornwall Councillor I do have a pot of money known as the Community Chest and this year I have £3,000 to sharewith community groups and organisations in St Day Carharrack and Gwennap, in the past I have helped with funding forthe St Day Christmas Tree Festival the Lantern Event, equipment for Sunny Days Nursery, I have also helped Carharrackand St Day Silver Band, St Day WI., St Day & Carharrack School and Cornwall Deaf Centre. if you would like to applyfor a grant please feel free to contact me.

A date for your diaryI did promise those who came on my last fund raising guided walk that I will be doing another which will be around CarnBrea and the Great Flat Lode, this walk will take place on Saturday the 5th of October starting at 10am, parking will be atthe Countryman Inn at Piece near Carnkie. There will be a collection on the day for Cornwall Hospice Care and for thosebooking a lunch at the pub the landlord Nick Lake has agreed to make a donation towards this charity.

Kind regards, Mark

Bakewell Tart Recipe - 13 and Odds ‘n’ Ends

AUTUMN FRUIT BAKEWELL TART

Blackberries are beginning to ripen on the bramblesand my thoughts are turning towards making beautifulBlackberry & Apple Jam which I love. During the coldwinter days every time I open a jar of this darkwonderful jam it so reminds me of the soft days of latesummer. Recipes are easily available either incookery books or, more often these days, online so Ithought I would give a recipe for a lovely Bakewell tartusing blackberry & apple jam rather than the usualraspberry. I have given the weights in grams and alsoounces for our older residents. I have often made thisrecipe and it is delicious.

Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 622cm / 9” flan tin

300g/10½ oz shortcrust pastry100g/3½ oz softened unsalted butter100g/3½ oz caster sugar2 large eggs (125g/4½ oz), beaten130g/4½ oz ground almonds½ teaspoon almond extract6-7 tablespoons blackberry & apple jamHandful of flaked almonds (if you have them)

Roll out the pastry on a floured board and line the flantin. Put in fridge to rest the pastry.

Using a food mixer blend the softened butter with thesugar till light and fluffy. Mix in the beaten egg andalmond extract then the ground almonds.

Take pastry-lined flan tin out of fridge. Spoon jam intothe centre and spread it out to the edge of the base.

Gently dollop the almond mixture on top of the jam tocover it – it will spread itself out in the oven so you donot need to be too precise.

Sprinkle over the flaked almonds.

Bake in the oven for about 25 minutes (check it at 20minutes). Turn the oven down to 160°C/140°Cfan/gas mark 3. Open oven and flap the door a fewtimes to cool it down. Cook for a further 10 minutesuntil it looks lovely and brown on top. Take out ofoven and place on a cooling rack.

Before serving dust with icing sugar if you have it.This tart is delicious warm. Of course custard, vanillaice cream or clotted cream goes fantastically well withit.

Enjoy!

UNITED LANDFILL SITE.SITA have provided us with an update of progress from the closedLandfill Site at United Downs.

● ·82,000m² of capping was completed in January 2013, butbecause of the heavy rain that had been experienced at theSite the contractors were unable to complete the final grading.

● The contractors returned in May 2013 after the Site had driedout sufficiently to complete the final grading.

● All remaining areas have also been hydro seeded now so thegrass spraying is completed for the whole site.

● Tenders have gone out for the reinstatement of the twobridleways that will run across the top of the Site, these workswill include any fencing and gates that are required as partof the restoration plan. It is hoped that this work will startbefore the end of the year.

● The tanks at the Leachate treatment plant have been paintedgreen so that the will blend into the background, these worksare also complete.

● The Weighbridge and subsequent building has been removedfrom Site and the remaining building that were associatedwith the Landfill i.e the Site garage and sheds etc will beremoved soon.

● There is a major contract that will take place at theAttenuation pond at the Sparry Lane end of the Site, theseworks have been delayed due to legal issues. Sita are tryingto push for these works to start as soon as possible to takefull advantage of the Weather.  The works include the removalof the current liner within the pond and making it a morenatural feature.

OVERHANGING HEDGE GROWTH - Some of the hedges on thenarrower roads and lanes are extending out into the road, causingproblems for pedestrians and vehicles. So - a reminder to those whose boundary hedges meet the highwayor a public byway, – it is your responsibility to cut them. CornwallCouncil only carry out minimal work at crossroads and danger spots. If they have to cut an area that has been neglected, they will bill thelandowner. This also applies to households where vegetationextends over pavements, causing problems for pedestrians.

RAGWORT - It’s also been quite a growing season for Ragwort. Apretty yellow flower, but deadly to horses if eaten. If you haveragwort on your land and it is near a field where horses graze, youshould remove it by pulling it up (with gloves) by the root and burningit. If horse owners are experiencing problems with neighbouringlandowners that refuse to do it, there is a contact number they canring. It is 03000 601112 or email [email protected]
