OPPORTUNITY TO GET AN UP-CLOSE, HANDS-ON VIEW

OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY IN NEW YORK CITY, THE

FASHION CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.

Summer Fashion Lab gives you the chance to explore a wide range of fashion-related careers. You’ll get a taste of what it’s like to study fashion at the college level as you begin acquiring the knowledge and skills you need to break into this exciting, fast-paced industry. Summer Fashion Lab runs four consecutive weeks, from July 6 through July 31. Students have a variety of credit and non-credit classes from which to choose.

So try on a fashion career—at the college devoted exclusively to the business of fashion. Explore career opportunities, meet industry professionals, experience LIM College— and have fun!

Non-credit: Open to high school students ages 14-18, recent high school graduates, and international students. Non-credit courses are one week long, with morning and afternoon sessions.

Credit: Open to high school students entering the 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2015 or non–LIM College students between the ages of 17 and 23. Credit courses meet Monday through Friday for two consecutive weeks. Students taking credit courses can expect to complete college-level academic assignments in and out of the classroom. Students will receive one credit for each successful course completed. Students may select one course per session.

THE PROGRAM OFFERS TWO TRACKS: NON-CREDIT AND CREDIT.

Morning classes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Afternoon classes from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

SUPPLIES: Students will receive a supply list from their instructor on the first day of class. Students will be responsible for purchasing supplies on their own and can expect to pay between $10 and $35 per course. Most supplies will be available for purchase at the College Bookstore.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

THE SKILLS OF CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Develop the skills you need to market and present yourself professionally. You’ll take a personality test and develop a tentative career plan.

THE STYLIST’S ROLE

Learn about fashion styling, from publications to live events, including how to conceptualize and execute a live fashion shoot.

SOCIAL MEDIA & MOBILE MARKETING

Explore the latest media outlets, from blogs to social media channels to guerilla marketing campaigns.

THE VINTAGE CLOTHING INDUSTRY

Study the history of vintage clothing and fabrics and their influence on fashion today. You’ll visit a garment center studio that merchandises vintage fabrics.

URBAN FASHION

Trace the origins of the hip-hop look and how it developed into a major force in streetwear. Major manufacturers are reviewed which will give you a preview into careers.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING & DISPLAY

Gain hands-on practice working with mannequins, props, and display cases to create powerful fashion statements with merchandise.

CREDIT COURSES

APPAREL MERCHANDISING

Take on the role of an apparel merchandiser in this workshop-style course. You’ll conceptualize and then develop several mini fashion collections, creating storyboards and working with the computer programs used in the fashion industry.

COLOR & DESIGN FOR THE VISUAL MERCHANDISER

Learn basic art elements, their relationship to art projects, and how they connect to visual merchandising by developing, composing, and completing two-dimensional art projects.

FASHION BUYING & RETAILING

Gain a comprehensive overview of fashion retail and the many aspects of buying through in-class workshops, store visits, and group projects. You’ll learn about retail channels in the marketplace today and how retailers target fashion consumers.

FASHION SHOW PRODUCTION

Learn how to plan, promote, and execute a fashion show, including concept, music selection, stage design, merchandise selection, styling, model selection, and public relations. You’ll participate in a fashion show on the final day of class.

FASHION WRITING & PUBLICATIONS

Learn all aspects of fashion writing and publishing, from fashion and film to art and design; politics and pop culture to photography and forecasting. This course includes industry visits and guest speakers. You’ll create and produce your own fashion publication.

FOUNDATIONS OF FASHION STYLING

Learn about the important role fashion stylists play in mediums including advertising, editorial, TV, video, and events. Hands-on learning will include a live photo shoot.

PUBLIC RELATIONS FOR THE FASHION INDUSTRY

Learn from an industry executive who will teach you the fundamentals of public relations and how it’s used to merge fashion and entertainment. You’ll conceptualize promotional materials and an experiential event.

NON-CREDIT COURSES

ART’S INFLUENCE ON FASHION

Visit museums in NYC to study the influence of various historical art movements on the fashion industry and on specific designers. This course will require significant walking.

BEHIND THE SCENES: FASHION FIELD TRIPS

Discover what it takes to succeed in the fashion industry by visiting buyers, publicists, trend spotters, stylists, and manufacturers on their own turf. This course will require significant walking.

EVENT PLANNING

Learn what’s involved in planning a fashion-industry “happening” and how such events relate to fashion.

FASHION BLOGGER BOOT CAMP

Learn how to write about fashion for an online audience and how to promote your site on various social media platforms through this workshop, led by a prominent fashion industry editor.

FASHION FORECASTING

Explore fashion forecasting at all industry levels, namely trend identification, analysis, and synthesis. You’ll learn terminology, timing, sources of inspiration, research tools, and presentation techniques.

FASHION MAGAZINES

Learn how a fashion magazine business is organized and operated, including the terminology used in the industry, and then create your own magazine concept.

FASHION MARKETING

Are you interested in learning how fashion products are marketed to consumers? In this class, students will learn how to understand consumer behavior, identify target market segments, and be introduced to the marketing concepts that are applied to today’s dynamic and global fashion business.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY

Study all aspects of fashion photography, including lighting, composition and balance, model casting, location scouting, and film editing, using your own digital camera. (Camera required.)

FASHION + TECH

Discover how design and technology merge to create new and exciting fashionable consumer products.

FASHION SKETCHING & DRAWING

Express your fashion designs and ideas by studying basic fashion illustration in this workshop-style course.

FASHION SPEAKER SERIES

Meet and learn from fashion industry professionals, including stylists, buyers, bloggers, and successful LIM alumni. You’ll also participate in roundtable discussions.

INSIDE THE FASHION BUSINESS

Gain an insider’s look at the fashion business by learning how merchandising, retailing, and forecasting all play a part in creating a fashion line.

INTRODUCTION TO FASHION BUYING

Learn what it takes to be a buyer in the retail industry, including selecting and developing products for customers.

INTRODUCTION TO FASHION PR

Learn the function of public relations in the fashion industry and how fashion events and social media are integrated into a company’s promotional plan.

PROJECT FASHION

Conceptualize and create a mini fashion collection by learning the process of fashion forecasting and product development.

LOOKING AHEAD TO YOUR COLLEGE YEARS

LIM College is dedicated exclusively to the business of fashion. You’ll learn from faculty who are industry professionals. You’ll meet fashion executives who frequent our campus. You’ll make on-site visits to nearby fashion firms. And you’ll gain industry experience yourself, allowing you to build an impressive résumé.

HOUSING

We will be offering housing for Summer Fashion Lab students in our 1760 Third Avenue residence, known as “1760,” located between 97th and 98th streets. The residence features secure, air-conditioned, double and triple rooms with private bathrooms. With a communal state-of-the-art kitchen, laundry room, fully equipped gym, and library, students are just steps away from the amenities they want and need. There is 24-hour front desk security and ID card access to enter the building and rooms. Student Resident Advisors (RAs) are present in the residence hall and help facilitate organized evening activities.

You can register online for Summer Fashion Lab until the first day of classes at www.limcollege.edu/summerfashionlab.

Tuition: $250 [per non-credit course], $425 [per credit course] Housing for Summer Fashion Lab: $495 [per person/per week]

Refund Policy: You’ll receive a 100 percent tuition refund if LIM College cancels a course. If you withdraw one week or more prior to the first day of class, you’ll receive a 100 percent tuition refund, minus a $25 processing fee. If you withdraw less than a week prior to the first day of class, you’ll receive a 50 percent tuition refund, minus a $25 processing fee. No refunds are given if you withdraw after the start of class.
