CHAMBER CHAIRMAN MARC BERENFELD’S GOODBYE COLUMN

Marc BerenfeldBerenfeld Spritzer Shechter & Sheer LLPCGCC [email protected]

As I enter the final weeks of my chairmanship, I

can only marvel at the remarkable developments of the past year. As our economy underwent unprecedented changes, we have been forced to re-examine many of our old assumptions and consider our roles in the new order of global business. Many economists believe that the future

will belong to nimble establishments that swiftly adapt to the new realities of business and the new demands of our changing society. The greatest immediate challenge that we may face as business people and professionals will be embracing change and making it work for us.The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce

has taken a number of bold steps to adjust to the new economy by taking advantage of our strengths as a business community. Our recent Goals Conference focused on a number of important initiatives that will unite the local private and public sectors in a concerted effort to promote greater prosperity.By building powerful partnerships, we

will enhance Coral Gables’ economic development, increase local travel and tourism, and organize programs that will fortify our local business infrastructure. These initiatives will unite diverse elements of our community and increase opportunities for the broadest possible range of our members.I can think of no one better suited to

lead us in this new direction than Sarah Nesbitt Artecona, the incoming Chair of our Chamber. After working closely with her during the past year, I have come to appreciate Sarah’s very special combination of energy, vision and management skills. Therefore, I have every confidence that she will guide our Chamber to even greater achievements in the coming year. The job of Chamber Chair can be extremely

satisfying and rewarding, but it requires many hours of intensive work to make a meaningful difference. I am grateful to my wife and three daughters for allowing me to take the time needed to serve in this capacity during the past year. Additionally, I wish to thank my immediate predecessor, Carolina Rendeiro, for preparing me to lead. Our Chamber is fortunate to have a talented

and committed staff of professionals, led by our president, Mark Trowbridge. Mark, thank you for your wisdom and vision, as well as your friendship, which I hope will last a lifetime. We also are grateful to our Chamber employees for accomplishing amazing feats -- despite limited resources – that add excitement and panache to our year-round schedule of activities. We appreciate your many hours of dedicated service. To my fellow Chamber members, thank you

for allowing me to serve as your chairman this past year. I am honored to have received this opportunity and I look forward to an even brighter future together. As we enter a new era of opportunity, let’s

rally around the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and discover its many benefits to our businesses and our lives. Great Expectations result from collective action. So let’s commit our time and our resources to advancing our shared achievements and future success.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - The Summer Sizzles at Razzledazzle Barbershop!

3

Mark A. Trowbridge, President & CEOCoral Gables Chamber of [email protected]

This past month, my CEO Workday (Chamber Educational Outreach Workday) took place at a new business along Miracle Mile, Razzledazzle Barbershop.

Nestled gently in one of the paseos in the 200 block of Miracle Mile, this speak-easy style

barbershop is anything but quiet, and yet, everything quaint. The owner, Elena Linares, is a sparkplug of energy, creativity

and delightful pizzazz. She puts the fire in the screaming red walls laced with green ivy and trimmed with gorgeous fresh-cut roses. When you enter, you step back in time – when getting a haircut was an experience, not an errand.

You are greeted by a customer-service savvy staff dressed in a traditional style evocative of the 1940’s. There are numerous stations, including a high-backed chair fit for a king (in need of a shoe shine). Remember, this is for men only (and boys, too)…but ladies, pick up a gift certificate for the gent in your life.

Linares is one of nine children raised in New York who began cutting the hair of her brothers and sisters at a very early age – an experience that has lasted until this day. She is passionate about her work and she has transformed a traditional trip to the barbershop into an amazing experience. You will feel special from the minute you walk through the door – no easy feat these days.

During my day at Razzledazzle, I was outfitted from head to

toe in the traditional uniform for all male employees – black pants, crisp white shirt, black bowtie, black shoes and a vest emblazoned with the word Razzledazzle across the back. I was dressed to buff – shoes that is!

I took on the enviable task of shining shoes (Elena was sweet and caring when she suggested that I would not be the best choice to do haircuts or straight razor shaves) for those who wanted the full Razzledazzle experience. Josie trained me on my own shoes first (great idea!) and taught me that the key to a great shoe shine is allowing the paste to set for a few minutes on one shoe while you work on the other.

Step One: clean the shoe with a small brush to remove any debris or dirt

Step Two: apply the paste (and in the correct color)generously.

Step Three: use the buffing strip to remove the excess paste and work the creases

Step Four: brush the shoe to a high shine, and don’t forget the tongue and trim

Needless to say, I am a pro now…even after a very rainy day! I also assisted with answering phones, cleaned up around the shop and learned the value of white and brown sugar for a good customer. I must say, the Razzledazzle experience is second to none – whether you are getting your hair cut, a straight razor shave (my personal fave!), a mani/pedi (yes men, you can do this!) or a shoe shine.

Step back in time and visit the folks at Razzledazzle – you will be glad you did! They are located at 224 Miracle Mile and can be reached at 305-461-4666. Appointments suggested, walk-ins welcome.

Razzledazzle Barbershop, a 1940’s New York Style Barbershop, officially opened in Coral Gables on Jan. 15, 2009. The barbershop offers classic hot lather shaves, haircuts & shoe shines. “Let’s call it a throw back in time with a modern twist,” according to owner Elena Linares.

W \ell, if you didn’t make it to the Goals Conference this year, you really missed out! Our chairman, Marc Berenfeld, set the standard pretty high

at last year’s conference and incoming chair, Sarah Artecona followed suit by running another great program. Based on the sessions in which I participated and others which I heard about, every workshop produced creative ideas about improving our Chamber and the many services enjoyed by its members. Even more ideas came after the working sessions on Friday during the cocktail reception when serious networking took place.

Our next Trustee Reception will be at the new offices of Healthy Skin Therapy on July 14th. Be sure to come so you can see how easy it is to make yourself – men and women alike -- look younger! The next Trustee Luncheon will be on Wednesday, July 29th at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables and will feature Frank Armstrong, a principal with Investor Solutions, Inc., a nationally recognized financial advisor. He will be speaking about our retirement challenges and navigating our financial future, certainly a very timely subject!

The August Trustee Reception is being combined with our Interactive Luncheon & Trustee Invitational. It has strategically been scheduled for Friday, August 28th at the Biltmore Hotel and will go until about 3 PM. This would be a good time to think about taking the rest of the afternoon off to hang out with Trustee friends and do some serious networking.

Our April luncheon, sponsored by Colliers Abood Wood-Fay and Hyatt Regency Coral Gables, was quite informative. Karen Aronowitz, president of the United Teachers of Dade, gave us

the scoop about what is happening (or not happening as the case may be) in our county.

May’s reception at Foley & Lardner’s new offices gave us some insight into how forward-thinking the firm is with regard to technology to improve client satisfaction and employee comfort. We also were heartened to learn of the firm’s commitment to serving our community. May’s luncheon, sponsored by Coconut Grove Bank, was another eye opener. Speaker Erik Fresen, our District 111 State Representative, presented his perspective about Florida’s political scene and its impact on us.

Please welcome new Trustee Members Banif Finance Corp. USA, Coral Gables Dentistry, Healthy Skin Therapy, Mayfair Hotel and Spa and Universal Wealth Managers LLC. As always, remember to look for them at the next Trustee function, learn more about them and consider how you might help one another get more out of your Chamber memberships.

Trustees renewing their memberships since my last report are Aetna, Inc., Bank of Florida, Baptist Health South Florida, Barakat, Jacobs & Associates, P.L., BBU Bank, BlueCross BlueShield of Florida, Colliers Abood Wood-Fay, Doctor’s Hospital, Elliot, McKiever and Stowe, Inc., Family Resource Center, Forshee & Lockwood, Goldstein Schechter Koch, International Finance Bank, Miami Children’s Hospital, Montica Jewelry, New England Financial, Northern Trust, PhotoOffset, Smooth Sailing Executive & Life Coaching and the Allen Morris Company - all confirming value of active involvement in our Chamber during these trying times.

Another reminder that if you want to reach out to a particular Trustee member or company, visit the Chamber’s website or call one of the Diplomats, and ask for help. They include John Schoendorf, 305-669-7051; Thad Adams, 305-476-2532; George Feliciano, 305-446-8141; Martha Machado, 954-518-6129; Marti Mang, 305-476-6272; and Georgina Rangel-Marquez, 305-670-4668, and Raquel Hickey, 305-978-4696.
