ASCLS-IL
Insights LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Kate Bernhardt, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM, LSSGB
Hello ASCLS Members,
It is with great excitement
that I am writing this letter
and beginning my term as
President of ASCLS-IL!
I've been a member for
over 10 years and am
grateful for all the
opportunities this
organization has provided
me. I look forward to this
opportunity to serve the
organization and provide
mentorship, support, and
encouragement to
members, especially those
who are new to our
profession or getting more
involved within ASCLS.
The ASCLS Annual
Meeting took place this
June in Charlotte, North
Carolina. In the past,
ASCLS and AACC would
hold a combined meeting
in late July. Despite it
being the first year the
meeting was not held with
AACC and being held a
month earlier, ASCLS had
a record number present.
Combined with the
Association of Genetic
Technologists (AGT),
nearly 700 laboratory
professionals and
colleagues came together
to learn from one another
and network. Beginning
with this event, ASCLS
and AGT will hold a
single meeting,
integrating their
educational programs,
abstracts/posters, and
industry engagement
platforms. This will allow
the two groups to have an
even broader educational
program. Some of the
outstanding topics this
year included:
• Violence in Healthcare
• Preventing Healthcare
Acquired Anemia
• CRISPR Analysis for
Hemoglobinopathies
• Genetic Variations of
Learning Disabilities
• Review of
Hematopathology
• Car-T Cell Therapy from the Perspective
of the Physician, Patient, and Caregiver
Immediate Past President
Toula Castillo represented
our state at the Annual
Meeting. Notable
accolades for our state
included:
• 1st place award for the ASCLS-IL website (Amy Weaver)
• 3rd place award for ASCLS-IL Insights newsletter (Masih Shokrani, Michelle Campbell) • Alex Boryszczuk was awarded a plaque for
Developing Professional of the Year
• Amy Liu was awarded a plaque for Member of the Year
• Additionally, Nick Moore was inducted into the Alpha Mu Tau
Fraternity. He was

nominated by Toula Castillo and Kim Von Ahsen, our Region VI Director. Alpha Mu Tau is an honorary fraternity that raises money for student scholarships and members are inducted based on their degree of professional service to ASCLS.
Thank you to all our Illinois representatives, which also included Dan Sharp, Lisa Bakken, and Dianne Cearlock. While I unfortunately could not attend the meeting myself this year, I am looking forward to attending the meeting next year in Louisville! During my year as President, I plan to continue participating in the By-Laws Committee, led by Elaine Nicholas. Last year, we made tremendous progress revising our state by-laws. Our State By-Laws had not been updated since 2007 and require many changes to align with the National By-Laws. We did much of the hard work last year, so we will continue this momentum to get formal approval at the National Level. We will also begin working on our branch by-laws. Additionally, I plan to provide mentorship, encouragement, and support to our new President- Elect (Nick Steder), members of the Board of Directors, committee chairs, and committee members.
On a personal note, this is a busy year for me. Not only am I serving as President of this organization, but I am also a Mother, Manager, and Marathoner-in-Training! Like so many people, we seek to find balance in our professional and personal lives. Burnout is everywhere in healthcare and we have to take care of ourselves, and each other. My husband, Mark, is also a Medical Lab Scientist who works in industry as a Blood Bank technical trainer. We have a 4 year old son, Nathan, who says he wants to be a Core Lab Manager and runner like me! I've been running a lot these days, as I'm training for my very first full marathon. I think it is very important to say I am not doing anything alone. While I navigate my year as President, I am thankful for the support of my ASCLS colleagues who are another kind of family. Together, we do meaningful work for the organization and our profession. I look forward to cultivating new connections and enriching existing friendships this upcoming year. Thank you to everyone for all you do every day as a laboratory professional! If you haven't renewed your ASCLS membership yet, please do! The new year starts on August 1.
