national competitions in 1902. In 1959 the Soviet participants in Paris won the team com-

petition. And in 1980 the USSR won at the Olympic Games. Horses have been domesticat-

ed for over 5000 years. Scientists believe that horses have evolved over the past 50 million

years from much smaller creatures.

Paintball sitesDid you know?

The first paintball game was held in New York in 1981. The game was attended by the jour-

nalists of three major American sports media. It had been almost a year since the publica-

tion of the articles about the game before they attracted the interest and response across

America. Inside the first balls for paintball was oil paint, which was impossible to wash off.

Therefore the appearance of water-soluble gelatin balls in 1984 gave a new impetus to the

development of paintball. In February 1985 came the first paintball gun. Since 1993 paint-

ball has flourished in Russia.

Golf courses Did you know?

While the modern game of golf originated in 15th-century Scotland, the game's ancient

origins are unclear and much debated. Some historians trace the sport back to the Roman

game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. The

world's longest golf course is the international golf club that is located in Massachusetts. The

course has a length of about 7600 meters. About 25% of the golfers in the world are women.

The chance of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf is 67 million to 1.

Mini-Golf coursesDid you know?

Geometrically-shaped minigolf courses made of artificial materials (carpet) began to emerge

during the early 20th century. The earliest documented mention of such a course is in the 8

June 1912 edition of The Illustrated London News, which introduces a minigolf course called

Gofstacle. Playing miniature golf courses requires mentally figuring unusual angles and

carom speeds as balls rebound from bricks and stones. Golfers will definitely need to carom

off a stone or brick since more than one hole will lack direct routes to the holes. Players

should think of miniature golf as billiards or snookers with a golf ball and putter.

Rugby groundsDid you know?

Rugby is known for the use of oval-shaped balls. However, this hasn't always been the case.

Initially, the balls were plum-shaped due to the shape of pigs' bladders that they were made

from. They became more spherical towards the end of the 19th Century when they began

being made using rubber inner tubes rather than the bladders of pigs. However, to distin-

guish the balls used in rugby from the balls used for football, Rugby School requested that

their balls remained slightly egg-shaped.

Gorodki game spaces Did you know?

Gorodki is an ancient Russian folk sport whose popularity has spread to Karelia, Finland,

Sweden, Lithuania, and Estonia. The concept is similar to bowling, the aim of the game is to

knock out groups of skittles arranged in various patterns by throwing a bat at them. The skit-

tles, or pins, are called gorodki (literally little cities), and the square zone in which they are

arranged is called the gorod (city).

Cycle lanesDid you know?

Before 1840 bicycles did not have cranks until a Scottish blacksmith Kirkpatrick Macmillan

made the first modern bicycle, which also featured iron rims. The bike was not a success.

Before that, you had to kick yourself forward. About 100 million bicycles are manufactured

each year worldwide. You can park about 15 bicycles in the same space that one car takes.

The Tour de France is one of the most famous bicycle races in the world. Established in 1903,

it is considered to be the biggest test of endurance out of all sports.

Tennis courtsDid you know?

Historians believe that the game's ancient origin lays in 12th century northern France, where a ball was struck with the palm of the hand. Louis X of France was a keen player of jeu de paume (“game of the palm”), which evolved into real tennis, and became notable as the first person to construct indoor tennis courts in the modern style. Yellow tennis balls

were used for the first time at Wimbledon in 1986.

In India, catamarans have been used for centuries. When the English adventurer William

Dampier first spotted one, it was nothing more then a raft made of logs. Catamarans of this

type are still used in India today. The basic difference between a boat and a ship is that boats

are designed for rivers and inland waterways, ships for seas and oceans.

you from going hydrated during night.

Wear clothes from natural tissues, like cotton or silk.

Do not buy fruits along the big streets, choose supermarkets.

Go to the parks or out of the city for the weekends and holidays, for example to the Moscow Region, where the air is much less polluted. Be especially cautious with the street food; it is advised to check that all the ingredients are fresh (refers particularly to meat and milk products) and are stored in the right

conditions.
