Financial pressure almost stoppedBrian From Finishing his degree.

Even as a teenager, Brian Bussiere of Somersworth, NH, had a vision for his career. When I was in high school, I started a mentor program at the middle school in Somersworth. I started working one-on-one with kids who have high energy and behavior challenges as students. When I saw the program making a positive impact, I decided that I wanted to study education and become a teacher.

Brian went on college campus tours and applied to his top two choices, getting accepted to both. In the fall, he moved into his dorm room ready to work hard, prepare for his career as an educator, and soak in the traditional college experience.

he was loving his degree program and the campus life, but a harsh financial reality was on the horizon: he couldn’t afford to finish his degree. When I was deciding to go back for my second year, I could only afford one more semester. I really liked the campus. I never wanted to leave, but I’m putting myself through school and I just couldn’t afford it anymore.

Driven by his goal of launching a teaching career, Brian didn’t let the financial hurdles slow down his education. He transferred to his local community college to work on his general education classes. While he was there, he learned about the options for completing his bachelor’s degree.

I heard about Granite State College. It was the most convenient option and the tuition wasn’t too much more than the community college.

By that time, I was working full-time at Somersworth Middle School. And at Granite State, I could continue to work while pursuing an education degree. At other schools, you need to take a year off for student teaching. I can’t take a year off and not get paid, so the fact that I can get my student teaching and clinical hours done while I work full-time made the difference.

In addition to balancing his career with his degree, Brian also makes time to give back.

I played baseball and soccer in high school, so coaching is

something I care about. I coach soccer and volleyball at the middle school, which has been a lot of fun.

Although Brian’s original college plans changed, he began to see a lot of benefits emerge that made him confident in his decision to finish his degree at Granite State.

I think the best way to learn something is when you’re doing it. Working full-time allows me to connect what I’m learning about in my online classes to everyday practice. Each day when I go into work, I get the opportunity to use what I’m learning in my role as a paraprofessional.

Financial setbacks stop millions of Americans from finishing their degrees each year. Brian knows this struggle and shares this advice with those facing a similar plight:

I had a lot of adversity thrown my way financially. I couldn’t afford the college I originally chose. If you logistically plan it out, and sketch out your path to success, you’re still able to obtain that degree. It takes a lot of hard work. There’s definitely some long days, but if you keep pushing through and stay focused on your path, you’ll get there.

Brian Bussiere has maintained his focus and will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Math Studies with Teacher Certification this June. He looks forward to building his degree as a middle school math teacher.
