Summer Camp Opportunities
ELP Parent Partnership

The information about the camps in this presentation was provided by parents at the January 2014 ELP Parent Partnership meeting. The ELP Parent Partnership is a pilot program for the 2013-14 school year. The Partnership’s mission is to create avenues for support, networking, information and advocacy for high-ability learners and their families. Most of the camps in the presentation were attended by students who attend the West Des Moines schools and who had good experiences at camp. For questions about the camps, the websites have been provided.
At the end of the presentation, there are some other opportunities for families of high-ability students as well as a list of camps for students interested in math and science.
This is not an exhaustive list of summer options, but rather a good place to begin your search.

Central Iowa Mock Trial Camp

Camp will be held on Drake’s campus – Meredith Hall
Featuring: Critical thinking skills, public speaking skills, communication skills, courtroom procedures, thorough understanding of Mock Trial, analytical thinking, extemporaneous argument, lectures by attorneys and law students. Will be using a civil case this year as practice.
Cost: $140.00 (includes Mock trial t-shirt, notebook, paper, hand-outs, and pizza party). Application must include a $50.00 deposit – remaining amount is due Registration Day.
WDMCS – SEA Summer Enrichment
Adventures Two-week course (M-F mornings); a variety of classes offered. Options change each year. Students may choose up to 2 different classes. 9-10:25 and 10:30-11:55 slots. Usually taught by WDMCS teachers.

Students are nominated by their school for this program. The Blank Summer Institute for the Arts & Sciences is a one-week residential summer program for 120 of Iowa’s gifted students who are currently in grades 7 & 8. The Institute provides exceptionally talented students with an intensive and advanced educational experience designed to enhance their intellectual and social growth. Each student selected will receive a $300 Myron and Jacquelin Blank Scholarship to cover a portion of the cost.
Courses offered: Advanced Science, Math Problem Solving, Global and Cultural Studies, Creative Writing, Invention & Innovation, Visual Arts, Performing Arts.
Students are housed in a residence hall located near the Blanks Honors Center on The University of Iowa campus. In addition to academic programming, students will be able to participate in a variety of cultural and recreational activities.
Session is held June 22- June 27, 2014 Information and forms available online Nov. 2013; Nominations completed by
Jan. 21,2014. Final selection February 22, 2014. Online acceptance due March 28, 2014.
Program eligibility: Iowa Assessment, samples of student’s work, teacher recommendations, awards/honors, current grade report, involvement in co-curricular activities, hobbies and other demonstrated ability and talent in the course areas, awards or participation in competitions/contests. No real cut-off scores specified – assume that the entry eligibility is based on a high achieving individual for chosen core.
Belin-Blank (JSI)

Students who are currently (academic year 2013-2014) in grades 6-8 may nominate themselves for the Junior Scholars Institute (JSI), a one-week residential summer academic program. JSI consists of nine classes. Students take a single advanced level course for the entire week. Each student selected will receive a $300 scholarship to cover a portion of the cost of the Institute. Students do not need to be in a talented and gifted program to nominate themselves.
Courses offered: Project Discovery-Finding your Writer’s Voice, Designing Mobile Apps, Leadership for Students Who Want to Make a Difference, Animal Behavior, Stop Motion Animation, Future Cities, An Intro. To Pre-Calculus, Intro. to Engineering.

OPPTAG Summer Programs(Iowa State University)

Camps: 1 or 2weeks. Jun-Aug, M-F, 9am-5pm, held on prestigious college campuses. Students (teens) may stay in the dorms (additional fee), supervised by camp counselors who lead evening activities. Kid camps have 2-3 breaks directed by activity counselors.
Taught by professionals in the industry, tech educators, or advanced graduates of technology. All classes have a teaching assistant, and residential camps have youth activities counselors.
Class numbers are kept small; Ratio 8:1
Our son attended 2-week teen programming academy, University of Chicago campus. He learned 2 programming languages. They had 1hr mid-day break for lunch, socializing, and recreation.

Adult classes offered at same time so parent can take classes too. (I did - was quite fun!!)
Our son LOVED this camp and made fast friends. Every day was an adventure and he regaled me with stories from class about what he’d learned and what they had performed/created. Counselors and teachers were kid-friendly and made class and breaks fun. Good class management, students always engaged.
We chose this atypical option because our son is a perfectionist and sometimes doesn’t enjoy working with others. 2nd City teaches how to deal with mistakes (there are no mistakes, only opportunities), work with other people, say “yes AND” to build on each others’ ideas, etc. A perfect learning situation, especially for a kid that loves performing.

CTY Online—Johns Hopkins Univ.
A distance learning education offering eligible students academic acceleration and enrichment at home or at school.
Honors Pre-algebra class fall 2010 (as a 6th grader).
Individually paced session--time based enrollment and tuition, on 3, 6, 9 months basis. Session can be extended with re-enrollment or one month extension.
School and College Abilities Test (SCAT, offered through the CTY Talent Search year-round ) to qualify for Grade 2 to 6 courses. SAT-I, ACT, or PSAT for students in grades 7-12. Scores for each individual courses are posted on CTY website*. Provisional admission available*.
Each student is provided with a login i.d. and a password.
Course material recorded by videos; notes, sample problems with solutions, and practice problems are posted online.

End of Chapter test, mid-term exam and final exam to receive a grade.

SENG Supporting Emotional Needs of the
GiftedMost conferences about giftedness focus primarily on educational issues. While they may include a few presentations about the social and emotional development and needs of gifted people and the challenges facing the gifted population, these presentations play a minor role.
SENG conferences reverse the priorities. They believe that recognizing, understanding, and accepting the social and emotional needs of this population are the first priorities for teachers, parents, and counselors. SENG supports strong gifted education programs, but believe the emotional piece is the foundation for the development of healthy, happy, well-adjusted, appropriately educated, and contributing gifted members of society.
