and jazz fans is to keep the musicalive. Clint Baker, in the past 30years, has done much, much morethan most people to achieve thatgoal. Clint has played numerousinstruments with a large number ofwell-known jazz bands. In sportsthey have box scores. If Clint had abox score, it might read somethinglike this: Cornet/trumpet in 20 bands, clarinet 11, trombone 14, tuba 11,guitar 14, tenor banjo 19, string bass15, and drums 19.

For the past 24 years, Clint hasbeen the leader of a New Orleans-style jazz group at Café Borrone inMenlo Park, California. He will bewith us at the 2016 Festival playingcornet with Grand Dominion Bandand tuba with Yerba Buena Stompers— both top jazz festival fan favorites.

He has been labelled a multi-instrumentalist and a born jazz

naturalist. He is a lecturer at SanMateo Community College. One ofhis other interests is teaching musicto children in elementary school aswell as teaching music in college andadult jazz camps. In January he willbe the cornet/trumpet instructor atthe AFCDJS Adult Jazz Camp. TheBakers have twin teenagers,

In 1937 he relocated to NewYork, where he was reunited withJack Teagarden in PaulWhiteman’s Orchestra. After ashort time Lavere moved to LosAngeles, where he worked formany years on the radio and as astudio pianist, often accompanyingsome of the biggest names in showbusiness — such as Bing Crosby,Bob Hope and Dick Haymes.Between 1944 and 1950 heorganized some of the bes tJazzmen in Los Angeles to recordfor the Jump label. For thesesess ions , “Lavere’s ChicagoLoopers” included Joe Venuti,Jack Teagarden, Nick Fatool,George Van Eps, Matty Matlock,Billy May, Floyd O’Brien, RicoVallese, Artie Shapiro and others.Jazz aficionados consider theserecordings to be some of the best“Dixieland” music ever recorded, and one of the sides was Lavere’scomposition “Love Lies” — oneof Teagarden’s greatest perfor-mances. In 1948 Lavere’s vocalon Gordon Jenkins’ record of“Maybe You’ll Be There” was amillion-seller.

In 1951, Lavere p layed aconcert in Pasadena with LouisArmstrong’s All-Stars. The bandat that time was in a state oft rans i t ion ; Jack Teagarden ,Barney Bigard and Arvell Shawwere set to leave the group. EarlHines had already departed and apermanent drummer had not been

decided upon. Teagarden andBigard were still around for thePasadena date, but the rhythmsection on this occasion consistedof Angelenos: Lavere, bassistMorty Corb and drummer NickFatool. Fortunately, the concertwas recorded and was la te rreleased on a GNP-Crescendo CDentitled “Louis and his Friends.”

Later, Lavere worked with TomAdair to write the material thatwas used in the “Golden HorseshoeRevue” at the then-new Disney-land in Anaheim. Besides contri-buting to the show, Lavere alsoperformed in the revue. Between1955 and 1960 he worked with

George Burns and Judy Garland, then relocated to Las Vegas. Hewas reunited for a short time withWingy Manone, worked with RussMorgan’s Orchestra and helpedbandleader Bob Crosby reorganizethe Bob Cats. Lavere moved backand forth between Las Vegas andSouthern California during the ’60sand also performed on cruises andat resorts.

Lavere passed away in Ramona,CA in 1983. He should be muchbetter known, but at least severalof h is composi t ions and therecordings he played on areavailable today on CD and viaYouTube.
