The Summer at Village 2013 brochure is now available! Camp is open to all students entering K-6, regardless of the school they attend. We extend a warm welcome to those joining us for the first time and to so many of you that are returning. We are pleased to offer over 50 camp experiences which include some favorites from previous years and many new camps that are sure to spark your child’s interest. Mission StatementSummer at Village is dedicated to providing enrichment activities that encourage social, emotional, and physical growth through a variety of engaging recreation, art, athletic, and academic programs.

We welcome every child’s unique personality and interests and strive to create a safe summer program that offers opportunities for children to design their own summer experience.

Summer at Village School is open to all students regardless of which school they • attend during the school year.

Enroll your child in classes based on the grade they are entering in the fall. • Students who have completed Transitional Kindergarten in June 2013 can enroll in classes appropriate for 1st graders.

Sign up by April 12, 2013 and waive the enrollment fee. Enrollment form must • be postmarked or faxed by 4/12/13.

Program fees are listed within the class description. All fees include materials • and supplies. Lunch is not included in the fees but can be ordered in advance. See page 30.

Refund PolicyVillage School reserves the right to change or cancel any class. Efforts will be made to assign students affected by such change to other

available programs. A complete refund will be given in cases where program replacement is not possible. Enrollment includes a $50 nonrefundable registration fee. A refund is given, less registration fee, when withdrawing on or prior to

May 17, 2013. There will be NO REFUNDS if a student withdraws from summer camp after May 17, 2013. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Absences & TardiesPlease call 310-463-4840 to report absences. Since excessive absences or tardiness may affect the quality of a camper’s experience, we ask camper’s to attend each day and arrive on time for the start of class.

Medications at Camp All prescrip-tion and non-prescription medications brought to camp must have a medica-tion authorization form completed by a parent and doctor. Please see camp offi ce or the summer camp page at www.village-school.org to obtain an authorization form.

Snack and Lunch We recommend that each camper bring a morning and afternoon snack to enjoy during each recess. Students may participate in the daily lunch program or bring their own sack lunch from home. (optional catered lunch, see page 30) Don’t forget a bottle of water for snack and lunch. Sun Block Please apply sun block be-fore arriving to camp. A hat and extra sun block may be brought to camp in camper’s backpack.Personal Belongings Please label all bags, bottles, towels, hats, and sweat-shirts with camper’s name. Use of electronic devices including cell phones are not permitted. We are not responsible for lost items.Early Pick-Up & Late Arrival Please come to the summer camp of-fi ce to sign your camper in or out when picking up early or arriving late.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up ProceduresMorning drop-off is between 8:45am-• 9:00am on the west side of Swarthmore Avenue.(See map on page 1)

TK and Kinder Campers can be walked to • classroom by parents between 8:45am and 9:00am.

Pick-up in carpool area after the morning • session between 12:20-12:30pm. Morning campers stay through the end of lunch.

Drop-off at La Cruz campus for the • afternoon session between 12:00-12:10pm.

Please do not park in the carpool area.•

Please do not use the bus lane in front of • the school to drop-off or pick-up campers.

Only those people authorized on the en-• rollment form will be allowed to pick up campers.

Pick-up changes must be in writing (note • or email) and forwarded to the summer camp offi ce by 12:00pm.

Afternoon pick-up runs from 3:00-3:15pm. • Campers not picked up by 3:15pm will be taken to the camp offi ce. A late fee of $25 is incurred if picking up after 3:30pm.

Please display the Carpool Pick-up Pass on • page 35 on the passenger side dashboard to help expedite pick-up. Non-Village School families should have ID ready at pick-up.

Fourth, fi fth, and sixth grade students are invited to participate in our Summer Online Academy

math course covering key concepts that correlate with our Everyday Math curriculum.

The selected concepts are ones that our teachers fi nd to be especially important for success in

math. The Summer Online Academy math courses have been designed to offer a refresher prior

to returning to Village in September or as an opportunity to jumpstart for the upcoming year.

TK Camp & Kinder CampOpen to Village School students entering TK and Kindergarten in the Fall.

TKers and Kindergartners…start the summer off with exploration! Students will learn

about Village School and make new friends with Mrs. Reilly & Mrs. Morris.

The day will be fi lled with exciting activities relating to ladybugs, the 4th of July, the

alphabet, Dr. Seuss, and fascinating dinosaurs! Students will be engaged in projects that

will have them reading, writing, cooking, hunting for ladybugs in the Learning Garden,

creating fabulous art work and even digging for dinosaur bones in the Village School

sandbox! This is an extraordinary opportunity for our youngest students to begin their transition to Village

School by meeting their new teachers and friends.

Please have your chid bring a snack and backpack to camp each day. Also, in case of accidents or messy spills please pack a change of clothes (top, bottom, underwear, socks) for your child. Place items in a zip lock bag labeled with your child’s name. We will keep the clothes in the classroom while your child is in camp.

*One full week required for new TK & K students.

Viking Girls Volleyball ClinicThis clinic is designed for girls of all skill levels. Players will be instructed in the fundamentals as well as the rules and strategies of the game. Focus will be on exercises that focus on passing, setting, hitting, and serving. Viking Boys Flag Football ClinicThis fl ag football clinic focuses on the core skills of passing, catching, de-fl agging and defensive positioning. This is a non-contact clinic designed for players with experience as well as players new to the game. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, sportsman-ship, and game strategy. Viking Boys & Girls Basketball ClinicGet a head start on your fall sports training. This skill-inten-sive clinic focuses on fundamentals of the game, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Each player will be placed on a 5-on-5 team and will participate in daily scrimmages. Players will put their skills in action during our playoffson the last day of camp.

Animal Encounters Grades K-6Animal Encounters provides a hands-on class with live, kid-friendly animals. Campers will pet, feed, and learn abouteach animal they meet. Campers will learn through stories, games, and related arts & craft projects. We have over 300 animals, so you never know what we’ll bring. Professor Egghead Science Academy Grades K-3Professor Egghead has been busy all year cooking up experiments in his laboratory and now he’s fi nally com-ing back to Village Summer Camp! Join the Professor as he mixes po-tions, travels to Planet Egg in his crazy rocket ship, and explains all the mysteries of science. Hands-on classes teach science in an innovative way and feature concepts that relate to national science standards. Each day focuses on a specifi c theme and features experiments that are guaranteed to captivate the attention of any aspiring young scientist. Viva el Espanol Grades 1-4Come join Señora O. for an opportu-nity to learn practical and fun Spanish vocabulary. Students will practice language while exploring culture, literature, art, games, and food. Camp participants will receive a passport where they will stamp and record what they have learned as they travel through various Spanish speaking countries. Academic Skills SharpeningGrades 2-6This class is designed to help students who need reinforcement in writing, reading comprehension, and math for the next grade level they will enter in the fall. The students will be assessed in reading comprehension at the start of the session, and a program will be designed to meet their needs at their appropriate reading comprehension level. Each day the students will focus on reading comprehension (specifi cally in drawing conclusions), fi nding their own writing voice, math facts prac-tice, and playing math games. Stu-dents enrolling in a second week will begin working on writing paragraphs and will delve further into reading comprehension strategies. Students enrolled for 3-5 weeks will develop a better understanding of es-say writing, as well as explore other areas of reading comprehension such as making inferences and fi nding cause and effect. Students will play math games that develop their under-standing of math, word problems, and their problem solving skills. Class is taught in both large and small groups. In addition, each stu-dent will have one-on-one time with Mrs. Welsh every week. Consecutive weeks are recommended. Sensational Sushi Grades 1-6Study the food and culture of Japan through sushi! You will not only learn how to make California, cucumber, and hand rolls, pot-stickers, and miso soup, you will also learn how to set a table for sushi, count and write to ten in Japanese, and even learn how to write your name in Japanese! Come learn the history of sushi, how to order sushi in Japanese, and even play games related to sushi and the Japanese culture. Get your sushi chef bandanas ready and grab your chopsticks for this hands-on Japanese journey!Instructor: Ms. Nikki GilbertClass Limit: 20Course Fee: $260 Waterpalooza Grades 1-6

Nothing says summer like water and sunshine. Our time will be split between swimming at the Palisades High School Aquatics Center and playing games at Vil-lage School that involve H20 such as water balloon relays, sponge races, capture the water balloon, duck-duck-squirt and Ob-sta-Cool course relays! On the last day of camp you’ll enjoy sliding down the 18-foot double water slide. Bring your swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, rubber sole shoes that can get wet, and a hat each day and get ready to get WET!Note: Students should feel confi dent and comfortable in a pool. outdoor games, and crazy dress up days.

Friday is our day to get WET on the giant 18 foot double water slide!

All-American Sports Grades 1-6Let’s celebrate the 4th of July with your favorite American sports. We’ll play bas-ketball, baseball, golf, fl ag games, and relay races that will get your heart pump-ing with excitement! We encourage you to wear your favorite sports attire each day. Instructor: Ms. Kourtney HicksClass Limit: 30Fee: $160

Boarderz Grades 1-6Spend your summer at the most awesome skateboarding camp in L.A.! This camp is for skateboarders of all levels. Camp-ers will get quality individual and group instruction from our amazing skateboard professionals. From novice to more ex-perienced skaters, we instill the core fundamentals of skateboarding including proper stance, correct pushing/foot place-ment, kick- turns, carving, ollies, and a lot more. More experienced skaters will get the proper instruction to make them even better skaters.Get the chance to put your creativity to work by designing and building your very own wooden fi ngerboard skate park! Grab your boards and let’s roll! Protective equipment is required to skate and will be provided or bring your own elbow/knee/wrist pads and helmet from home. Girls Rock Camp Grades 1-4It’s a party everyday for GIRLS ONLY in this class! Each day will include a differ-ent theme where you’ll get to dress-up, wear glitter make-up, learn dance routines, sing songs and play games. Come join the party and rock out! The students will be assessed in reading comprehension at the start of the session, and a program will be designed to meet their needs at their appropriate reading compre-hension level. Each day the students will focus on reading comprehension (specifi cally in drawing conclusions), fi nding their own writing voice, math facts practice, and playing math games. Students enrolling in a second week will begin working on writing para-graphs and will delve further into reading comprehension strategies. Camp-ers will get quality individual and group instruction from our amazing skateboard professionals. From novice to more expe-rienced skaters, we instill the core funda-mentals of skateboarding including proper stance, correct pushing/foot placement, kick- turns, carving, ollies, and a lot more. I hereby authorize Village School, Inc., through its offi cers and employees, the person(s) into whose care my child has been entrusted, to consent to any fi rst aid, emergency medical care, examination, anesthetic, dental/medical or surgical diagnosis and/or treatment and/or hospital care to be rendered by any dentist licensed by the State of California. I understand that this authorization is given in advance of any specifi c diagnosis, treatment or hospital care being required but is given to provide authority and power to Village School, Inc. to give specifi c consent to any and all such diagnosis, treatment or hospital which the aforementioned physician in the exercise of his best judgment, may be deem advisable. This authorization shall remain effective for the full summer program mentioned above unless revoked, in writing, and delivered to Village School, Inc. I understand that Village School, Inc. and its offi cers and employees assume no liability of any nature whatsoever in relation to any transportation for the purpose of any examination or treatment.
