This multi layered body of work interlinks Exhibition & Performance. International Artists in Residence at The Red Stables, UrsulaMawson-Raffalt and Anthony J. Faulder-Mawsonare known particularly for the avant-garde natureof their work as they invent means to layer theirindependent works to form a third entity whichresults in a constantly evolving body of work resides on the borders between the performingarts and visual art.

Irish Patchwork Society – Eastern Branch

The aim of the Irish Patchwork Society is tofoster the art of patchwork and quilting. Thisexhibition celebrates the work from keenamateurs and those who work on a moreprofessional basis based in the Eastern Branchof the Irish Patchwork Society.

Dublin 2009 - Through a Multicultural Lens

6th June – 21st June

This show will be an exploration of culturaldifferences that make up the Dublin of today,seen through the eyes of a group of teenagersthat inhabit the city. The project was conceivedduring a workshop with the trainees at CMSLearning Centre and artist Annie Holland andfunded by the Irish Youth Council.

Prospect Art Group

23rd June – 5th July

Prospect Art Group was established in 1968 bya group of local resident artists. The group meetregularly and paint together weekly in St.Gabriels Community Centre, Clontarf. Proceedsof this exhibition are donated to a registered charity.

Exhibition Launch on Sunday 26th July at 4pm

Parklife is a temporary public art exhibition thatwill take place in St. Anne’s Park, during summer2009. The exhibition is part of Dublin City Council: The Red Stables’ Summer Art programme and is commissioned under a newaward for emerging curators. In response, ClairePower, curator, has invited a mix of six artists to come up with playful and engaging new work for the site-sensitive location of St. Anne’s Park.

James McAuley

Wednesday 6th May at 12pm

James J. McAuley was born in Dublin in 1936.His first collection was Observations, publishedin 1960. Since then his collections have includedA New Address (Dublin, The Dolmen Press,1965); Draft Balance Sheet, Poems 1963-1969(The Dolmen Press, 1970, distributed Oxford University Press); After The Blizzard (Universityof Missouri Press, 1975); Recital (Dolmen Press,1975); Home And Away; Coming And Going -New and Selected Poems (The University ofArkansas Press, 1989); Meditations, With Distractions: Poems 1988–98 (University ofArkansas Press, 2001); and New and SelectedPoems (Dublin, Dedalus Press, 2005). He hasalso written a libretto, "Praise!", and a verse play The Revolution (Dublin, The Lantern Theatre, 1966). He taught at Eastern Washington University, where he is a professor emeritus ofEnglish and former director of its creative writingprogram. He lives in Wicklow.

Ulick O’Connor

Wednesday 13th May at 12pm

Ulick O'Connor was born in Dublin in 1928.He is a biographer, poet and playwright. His biographies include Oliver St. John Gogarty(1964) Brendan Behan (1970) and Celtic Dawn(1984). He is the author of two books of poetryLifestyles (1973), Spudnik and Other Poems. Heis a member of Aosdana and recently launched a new collection of poems 'The Kiss - New andSelected Poems and Translations’.

John Quinn

Thursday 21st May at 12pm

John Quinn is a writer and broadcaster. He retired from RTE Radio in 2002 after a distinguished career of twenty-seven years. He is the author of five children’s novels, oneadult novel and a memoir, Sea of Love, Sea of Loss. His children’s novel The Summer of Lily and Esme won the Bisto Book of the Yearaward in 1992. He lives in County Galway.

Opera Gala

Sunday 10th May at 3pm

Due to their resounding success in the NorthsideMusic Festival and Opera in the Open in Civic offices every August, Opera Gala returns with all your favourites. Led by musical director David Wray.

Vang School Band

Sunday, 21st June at 12pm

The Vang School Band are touring Ireland in June 2009. Musicians come from all over Norway and perform some old time favouritesalong with traditional ballads and lullabies from Norway.

Xi'An Si

Sunday 2nd August at 3pm

The Xi'An Si are a four-piece traditional ensemble from China. A mutual interest in traditional Chinese music, coupled with the ability to play the country's four major traditionalinstruments, brought the students together. Instilled with the culture of two distant nations,The Xi'An Sessions allows the exotic timbres ofAsia to play the welcoming host to the beautifuland expressive music of Ireland.

Ebony Steel Band

Sunday 26th July at 3pm

The Ebony Steel Band from London was foundedin 1968 and has built a reputation for musicaldistinction all over the world. Ebony is crowned'Europe's finest' and have performed at some ofthe most prestigious events and venues in theworld such as World Cup, Germany 2006, Buckingham Palace and will be performing as part of London Olympics 2012.

Northside Music Festival

21st July – 16th August

Following a very successful festival in 2007 and2008 Dublin City Council Arts Office is planningto run and even bigger and better NorthsideMusic Festival in 2009. The Festival offers a programme of diverse free music events acrossthe north of the city.

The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children and TheRed Stables are delighted to collaborate on afour day long outdoor project with artist JoleBortoli and support artist John Kavanagh foryoung people. Participants will have theopportunity to artistically explore their immediateenvironment, while surrounded by open spaceand parkland. Imagine for a moment if you wereto bring together the beauty of St. Anne’s Park –the fountains, the streams, the weathervane, thewind, the woods, the bird song – into one singlebeautiful sculpture…What would it look like?

The finished sculptures will be exhibited at St.Anne’s Rose Festival on 18 and 19 July. Duringthe Rose Festival, John Kavanagh will facilitatechildren and their families in mini interactiveworkshops that creatively respond to theprocess of the residency and the movingsculptures.

The Summer Residency is part of The Ark’s Summer Visual Arts Programme, Earth Explorers, which runs from Sunday 21 June to Saturday 15 August at The Ark, 11a EustaceStreet, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.

The Rose Festival

18th & 19th July

Dublin City Council are hosting St. Anne's ParkRose Festival in St. Anne’s Rose Garden, St.Anne’s Park, Raheny on Sat 18th & Sun 19th

July, 2009. The 27th Annual Rose Trials are thecentral part of this Festival. A variety of familyfriendly entertainment will be provided over thetwo days. The Red Stables Food Market is openon Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Sunday is ‘FamilyActivity Day’ with children’s entertainment, artactivities, face painting, puppet and magicshows and guided walks of the rose garden.

_The Red Stables provides a series of unique workingspaces for professional artists, selected through opencompetition and administered by Dublin City Council Arts Office.

The provision of these subsidised studios is part of DublinCity Council’s Arts Service Plan, 2006-2009, in response to the critical lack of working spaces for artists living inDublin today and to support artists in their investigationof ideas.

Two residency programmes offer an emerging Irish artistand an International artist the chance to live and work inThe Red Stables. Dublin City Council provides artists witha level of administrative and creative support from thearts office staff to develop new work in collaboration withthe local community.

International Residential Studio

Featuring Paul Furneaux, Scotland. In Partnership with the Graphic Print Studio and Edinburgh Printmakers.

The aim of the International Artists' ResidentialStudio is to encourage International Artists tovisit Dublin, make work and actively exchangepractice and expertise with people living andworking in Dublin city.

Paul Furneaux investigates the ancient techniques of Japanese Woodblock printing and finding ways of using it in a contemporary context. He received the highly acclaimed Monbusho Award and conducted a Masters Degree in woodblock printing at Tama Art University, Tokyo. While on his residency at The Red Stables, Paul will develop preparatorydrawings in The Red Stables and then printed artworks in the Graphic Print Studio. He will conduct a series of master classes at The GraphicPrint Studio designed to share his experiences ofworking with challenging medium with otherartists.

As part of St. Anne’s Rose Festival, Paul will givedaily public demonstrations to public in OpenStudios in the courtyard.

This residency is the result of a three-tiered partnership between three artist studio organisations interested exchange opportunitiesat home and abroad. The Graphic Print Studiowill send an Irish artist to Edinburgh Printmakers.

There is no application procedure for the International Studio. Artists may apply in proposal form or in partnership with Dublinbased arts organisations or collectives. Proposals must outline why a residency in TheRed Stables is desirable to Dublin city, with letters of support from Dublin based artistic partners, up to date curriculum vitae and samples of work. The International Studio isbooked for 2009 and is currently accepting proposals for 2010.

Irish Residential Studio Award

Featuring Maria McKinney

Maria McKinney is the recipient of the IrishArtists’ Residential Studio Award, 2008-2009The Irish Artists’ Residential Studio Award is intended to support an emerging visual artist ata crucial stage of their professional practice andincludes studio and living accommodation atnominal rent and inclusion in exhibition programme at THE LAB, Foley Street, Dublin 1.

Maria McKinney moved into The Red Stables inNovember 08. Maria has moved from OrchidStudios, Belfast. Irish Residential Studio Awardwill allow Maria space and time to create a newbody of work and also to further her professionalcareer in Dublin. She also hopes to access international contacts with the support of DublinCity Council Arts Office through its work with visiting artists and arts professionals.

Maria grew up in Donegal and has been exhibiting her work since 2004 including solo exhibitions at the Context Gallery, Derry (2008);Ballina Arts Centre, Mayo (2008) and the Old Museum Arts Centre, Belfast (2007). Althoughonly in the early stages of her career, her work is already included in the Office of Public Works,Bank of Ireland and private collections.
