General Rules and Regulations

General Facility PoliciesParent or acting guardian must accompany and supervise children under the age of sixteen (16) while within the Ornelas Health and Physical Education Center (OHPE). It is strongly recommended that all swimmers shower with soap before entering the pool.

What to Bring• Swimsuit and towel for camps that feature a swim component. • Please provide a healthy snack and drink each day. • Provide a sack lunch if electing the Supervised Lunch option (pre-registration required).

Supervised LunchA supervised lunch hour is provided from noon-1p.m. for those campers who are registered for a morning (9 a.m.-noon) camp session and an afternoon session (1-4 p.m.). This option requires pre-registration. Please bring a sack lunch as no food service is provided. Students will be escorted to their next camp session.

RegistrationPlease fill out the appropriate Registration/Consent Form (Activity or Athletic) located after the camp descriptions. Please make certain your camper’s age fits within the age/grade-level range listed in the camp description. Feel free to copy for multiple camps/campers. There is limited enrollment in each camp, so please register early.

TransportationParents are asked to provide daily transportation for students attending camps and walk students inside the facility. Please pick students up promptly.

Overnight Camps Resident campers need to bring twin bed sheets, blanket and pillow, shower curtain, towels, toilet tissue, and toiletries.Resident campers stay in air-conditioned residence hall rooms and are supervised at all times by the camp staff. Driving students turn in their car keys at registration.

Smoking, Alcohol, and DrugsSmoking is not permitted on the main Tyler Junior College campus or any other TJC campus. This includes parking lots and any owned, leased, or rented property of TJC. Illegal drugs and/or misuse of other drugs is NOT ALLOWED on any TJC campus. Alcohol is NOT ALLOWED to be brought onto or consumed on any TJC campus.

Internet UsageOur programs sometimes offer Internet service to our participants. Part of our responsibility in preparing participants for the future is to provide them access to the tools they will be using as adults. With this opportunity comes responsibility. Use of the Internet is a privilege, NOT a right. Examples of Internet infractions that may be assigned consequences include but are not limited to:

• Playing of games unrelated to the scheduled activity; • Viewing inappropriate websites

Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app & game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

The Aquatic Camp begins with introductory work on swimming skills and promotes physical fitness and awareness, while encouraging fun and maintaininggood sportsmanship through the development of social skills. Other topicsinclude water safety aquatic games, an introduction to snorkeling in shallowwater, and fun on the diving board.

Camp Illusion

Learn the secrets of the professional magician and experience the wonderof magic! You will learn presentation skills, leadership skills, and publicspeaking skills. Students will learn how to perform magic with coins, cards, rope, paper, string, and many more everyday items to amaze their friends and family. The last day, a special magic show presentation will be put on by the students for family members.

For ages 7-13

Chess Camp

Make the right move for your child this summer! Chess develops your child’sreading and math ability, critical, and analytical thinking skills, and builds character and self-esteem. But don’t tell the kids…they think chess is fun!

Code Breakers

Calling all future coders, programmers, & designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or the high school student who just made $1 million dollars for programming in his bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years. This camp will meet Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It will not meet on Tuesday, July 4.

Cookies, Cupcakes and Games

Time to celebrate the holidays and personal celebrations like birthdays, graduations, winning teams, etc. We will make cookies and cupcakes to take home each day to share with family and friends. This is learning how to make gifts that do not require shopping. Homemade gifts always touch the heart and are great on the budget. We also need to work off those calories so we will have different games each day and swimming every day. Lunch will be provided each day in this camp. Please bring a swimsuit as you will finish the day by swimming in the indoor pool.

Comic Book Creation

Behold! An action-packed, hands-on exploration of the techniques and excitinghistory of the comic medium! Students will experience writing, penciling, inking,lettering and coloring their own comics. They will learn the shocking origins oftheir favorite comic books and characters and meet the real-life heroes and villainsbehind it all. Discussion topics will include superheroes, funny books, newspaperstrips, manga, webcomics, indie/alternative comix, animation, important creators,traditional vs. digital production techniques and more!

CSI (Crime Scene Investigation)

This camp will introduce students to some of the actual laboratory and crime scene techniques used by real-life investigators. Participants will learn to follow and document an evidence trail to solve a crime while learning about forensics and crime lab chemistry. Topics include: evidence collection, dusting for fingerprints, and various other activities that are used by detectives and scientists to solve real crimes.

Art plays an important part in the history, culture and traditions of civilizations around the world. During this camp you will learn about indigenous groups and their paints. Each day you will complete a project in the style and tradition of a different culture from around the world through the use of visual art materials, tools, techniques, and processes. Develop your own creative artistic style as we explore Mexico, Asia, the Middle East, United Kingdom and more.

Dance Intensive for Beginners

Are you interested in exploring all areas of dance? This is the camp for you. Enjoy jazz, hip hop, tap, modern and ballet in a fun, creative atmosphere. During this intensive, teachers will help improve dancer’s coordination, flexibility, and technical skills.

For ages 6-12

Digital Storytellers

From the Hunger Games to Harry Potter, we all love a great story. Whether you want to rewrite the ending to Star Wars, add yourself to a Divergent tale, or create a new adventure about your friends - any topic is possible in this class! Start with a concept, design the storyboard, add some dialogue, and watch as the characters in your imagination come to life in your first graphic novel! Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

For ages 11-14

Disc Golf

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc. In this camp, you will compete against other players each day as you hone your skills as a disc golf player. No experience is needed as you will learn the basics of disc golf quickly.

For ages 8-12 and 13-17

English/Western Horsemanship

This course will focus on basic skills of horsemanship and grooming, with astrong emphasis on safety. Students will have the choice of riding English orwestern style. Instruction will lead to a ride in a group environment meant to testyour newly acquired horsemanship skills.

For ages 7-18$199 price includes use of equipment and horse, T-shirt, camp photo, and all supplies.

Campers must provide their own snacks.

Jeans or long pants and smooth-soled shoes with half-inch heel required. ASTM/SEI riding helmets are provided.

Explorers of the Kingdoms of East Texas

This camp is for the special person who likes nature, animals and fish. We will explore native trees and learn their names and what they bring to our East Texas culture. We observe the animals that are part of the Northeast Texas environment and learn about them. We will learn how to make a basic fishing pole and how to know when a fish is hitting. More visiting nature and investigating our environment on Wednesday. Thursday will be geocaching. Finally, on Friday we will invite your parents to share the fun as go to Tiger Creek Refuge and have a celebration picnic. Campers must bring their own lunch each day.

Family Astronomy Camp

Camp will begin with a guided tour of the solar system in the planetarium, followed by a brief lecture course in the basics of astronomy. Instruction and hands-on projects in the construction and use of telescopes and astrolabes will follow the lecture. Improv Comedy

Are you ready to jump on stage and perform a show with nothing but your own imagination as a guide! Students will learn the exciting skills of short and long-form improvisational comedy culminating in a performance for friends and family at the end of the week. The camp is taught by an alum of New York City’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, the launch pad of many of today’s comedy stars. An in-depth introduction to careers in nursing, medical imaging, medical laboratory technology, respiratory care, dental assisting, and occupational therapy. Activities will explore the roles of specialized health care professionals as they care for simulated patients in a state-of-the-art teaching/learning facility. Equipment used will include high-fidelity computerized patient simulators and other laboratory devices. Students will learn the assessment process for heart, lungs and pulse. They will get the opportunity to care for a simulated patient. Students will learn about hand-washing, germ transmission and apply infection control techniques. Concepts related to medical imaging and medical laboratory technology will be introduced in the environment of high-technology laboratories. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, bag-mask ventilation and bedside assessments for the respiratory therapist will be introduced and practiced. All sessions will be taught by fully qualified Tyler Junior College nursing and health science professors.

Printmaking Workshop

Why make one work of art when you can print as many as you like? Printmakers are artists who use various methods to create multiple copies of the same image. This camp will be facilitated by Surveying and Mapping faculty, current students and industry professionals. Topics will include; GPS Technology, computer-aided drafting, graphic information systems (GIS), 3D laser scanning technology, total station measurements, topographic mapping, aerial mapping (UAVs), how Texas history impacts land surveying and educational/career opportunities in this rapidly expanding industry. The Surveying and Mapping program at Tyler Junior College is well respected and a leader in educating Registered Professional Land Surveyors in the State of Texas. We work closely with employers around the state to place graduates into jobs.

From Pong, through the Atari crash, to the rise of Nintendo, and the Sega/Sony console wars of the ‘90s and beyond, we’ll examine how video games have shaped our culture. Virtual Reality: The Future is Now

Embark on an EPIC adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting-edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Students do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset at home a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

This camp introduces basic hand tools and their functions through hands-on demonstrations. Youth will learn about history of woodworking and will create three-dimensional projects using pre-cut kits and of their own design.

Apache Youth Football

The Youth Football camp helps players - boys and girls - with basic skills to succeed. Camp includes work on passing, punting, kicking, and other skills at all positions. Training is conducted under the direction of TJC’s football coaching staff. AFC (if entering 6-8 grade) and NFC (if entering 9-11 grade). All campers receive a T-shirt.

Camp Dates & Times The camp meets from 9-noon, Monday through Thursday, June 12-15.

Facility/Location The Youth Football camp is located on the TJC main campus, 1400 East Fifth Street. State-of-the-art weight-training and conditioning equipment and complete access to field house facilities and Pat Hartley Field make the location ideal.

Danny PalmerHead CoachCoach Danny Palmer joined the TJC staff in January 2007. He has nearly 40 years of coaching experience, including 17 years as a head high school football coach and 17 years as a collegiate assistant coach. Eight years

were at the University of Houston as an assistant and recruiting coordinator, named the “Youngest 5A Head Coach” at Texas High at the age of 26 in 1975. Served as an assistant coach, as an offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. Played quarterback for 3 years for Johnny Stidger at John Tyler. Lettered all 3 years in 3 sports at John Tyler. Named to the All-State Baseball Team in 1967 and was coached by the late Dr. Billy Jack Doggett. Started 2 years at quarterback for the University of Southern Mississippi. Was the 1997 nominee for the Frank Broyles College Assistant Football Coach of the Year by the University of Houston. In 1977, was named as Coach of the Year by the Waco-Tribune Herald while at Waco Richfield.

Apache Baseball Camps

Facility/Location The camp facility is second-to-none anywhere for a quality, baseball-rich experience: Mike Carter Field, one of the premier baseball facilities in the state of Texas. With three fully turfed batting cages, five pitching mounds, and a beautiful natural grass playing surface, it offers the best environment and teaching capabilities.

What to Bring While not mandatory for camp participation, each camper is encouraged to wear appropriate baseball clothing and to bring his/her own glove and other personal items desired.

Location All campers check in each day at Mike Carter Field (717 Fair Park Drive, adjacent to the Tyler Rose Garden in Tyler) and are to be picked up from field at end of their daily session.

The Tyler Junior College Apache Baseball Camp involves some of the highest-level baseball instruction available in Texas. This summer there are two Junior All Skills Camps available for ages 6-12. These camps emphasize learning the fundamentals of the game. Instructional drills enabling players of any level to improve their performance are used extensively. While focusing on the development of baseball skills, building successful off-the-field characteristics is also stressed. Note: All campers will be grouped by skill/age.

Doug WrenHead Coach

Coach Doug Wren was an infielder for the TJC Apaches team of 2002. He was a standout at Arlington High School

(2001) during his high school career, where he was All District and team MVP his senior year. He went on from TJC to play two years at Howard Payne University (2006), where he was selected to the All-Region team, was named Academic All-Conference and was selected as team MVP in 2006.Coach Wren came back to Tyler after a year as an assistant at Weatherford College. He was also recently an assistant coach with the Texas Collegiate League Weatherford Wranglers. Coach Wren also spent time coaching the Arlington Express Select team.In 2014, Coach Wren’s Apaches won the NJCAA D3 Baseball World Series. It was TJC’s 50th National Championship as a school.His 2015 squad also captured the national title, making it the first back-to-back championships in baseball school history.In 2016, Coach Wren led the Apaches to a third straight national championship.

Youth Camp (For students entering grades K-2)A thorough camp underscoring basic fundamental skills of the game, along with contests and games designed to let the campers learn, improve and enjoy their camp experience.

Skills Camp (For students entering grades 3-8)A camp designed to teach each athlete the basic and advanced skills of basketball according to his age and ability. Emphasis is placed on fundamentals and individual/team play in a fun atmosphere.

Facility/Location Camps will be held in Wagstaff Gym, located on Apache Pass between Palmer and Mahon, on the TJC main campus. Campers should report to Wagstaff Gym each day at the appropriate time.

Apache LadiesBasketball Camp(For students entering Kindergarten-8th grade) This camp focuses on the FUNdamentals of basketball while introducing young athletes to the game of basketball. Campers will be taught shooting, ball handling, passing, rebounding and basic basketball rules. Competition for the younger campers will be limited to relays and learning activities. Older campers will be taught advanced skills in all areas of the game. The older campers will also be learning in a game-like atmosphere.

Camp Details Camps are held in Wagstaff Gym and Gentry Gym in the Ornelas Health and Physical Education Center, both located on Apache Pass between Palmer and Mahon, on the TJC main campus. Check-in will be in Wagstaff Gym on Monday at 9 a.m.

What to Bring Each day, camper is to bring shorts, T-shirt, socks, basketball shoes, personal water bottle and snacks.

Tuition The fee covers all camp activities, camp certificate, and a season ticket for each camper to all 2017-2018 TJC home basketball games.

Corey RoseHead CoachCorey Rose, head women’s soccer coach, directs these camps, assisted by TJC staff, college coaches, and several TJC players. Rose has just completed his ninth season as head coach of the TJC Women’s Soccer

program. Rose has won two NJCAA National Championships (2009, 2011) and has been National Runner-up twice (2010, 2016). Coach Rose has directed, coached, and been a part of soccer camps for the last 16 years. He has coached at many levels of soccer including: high school, club, ODP, junior college, and NCAA/NAIA four-year colleges.

Coach Maria Winn-Ratliff was named the second-ever softball coach in TJC history in July of 2016. She has attained over 500 wins in her coaching career.

Apache Tennis Camps

Tentative Evening Activities Team tennis on Sunday and Monday evenings; off-court entertainment: swimming on Monday and Wednesday, outdoor games on Tuesday, and social on Thursday evening.

Facility/Location The JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center, located on Palmer at Devine, is home to the 2016 Tennis Camps.Tyler Junior College offers: • 16 outdoor courts (12 lit for night play) -Louise Brookshire Tennis Complex -John E. What to Bring Shorts, T-shirts, socks, shoes, hat, sunscreen, tennis rackets, spending money (for snacks, racket string, etc.). Those wishing to swim on the designated days must bring a swim cap and a towel.In addition, resident campers bring: twin bed sheets, blanket and pillow, shower curtain, toilet tissue, swimsuit, toiletries.Resident campers stay in air-conditioned residence hall rooms and are supervised at all times by the camp staff. Driving students turn in their car keys at registration.

Camp Itinerary All campers check in Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at Claridge Hall, next to Rogers Student Center parking lot, on the TJC main campus. Check out of residence hall on Friday at noon. Group pictures taken on Sunday; individual pictures also available. Photographer will be part of check-in to provide order/cost information; picture is optional.Day campers report each day at 8:20 a.m. at the tennis courts and may be picked up at 5 p.m. All camps end at noon on Friday.

Awards At noon on Friday, an awards ceremony is held at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Tuition Commuter Campers: $310 (daily lunch included)Resident Campers: $425 (room/meals included)Families with more than one tennis camper will receive a discount for each additional sibling attending the same tennis camp. For additional siblings attending, make a check for $50 less than the advertised camp tuition.

One traditional camp is designed for students ages 11-17. The final three sessions are High School Varsity Camps and are open to varsity and junior varsity high school players. 44-player limit.Campers are grouped by skill and/or age level. Traditional camps are open to players from all levels; beginner through advanced. No more than six students to an instructor with instructors from TJC Tennis Tech, TJC championship teams, and top area coaches.

Connell was a Second-Team NJCAA All-American and Donnelly Award from the World Team Tennis Organization in 2002. In 2001, was the UIL 5A Doubles State Champion and Art Foust Sportsmanship Award at the Texas Boys’ Super 18 Championships.In 2011, Dash was named the interim head men’s and women’s tennis coach at TJC.In 2013, the TJC men’s and women’s tennis teams were NJCAA National ChampionsDash was promoted to full-time tennis coach in the summer of 2012.

Brandi HoodHead CoachBrandi Hood became the third volleyball coach in TJC history in 2015 after spending the 2013 and 2014 as the assistant coach under Ronda Shirley.Brandi began her collegiate

volleyball career playing for Coach Shirley at Hutchinson Community College (KS) in 2005-2006 and was named a First-Team NJCAA All-American her sophomore year. She graduated with her associates of arts degree and then advanced to play at Texas Tech University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 2008.After graduation, Brandi went back to Hutchinson Community College as an assistant coach from 2009 to 2013. During her tenure there, she helped coach the team to a 9th place (2009) and 11th place (2012) finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.In 2013, Brandi came to Tyler as the assistant coach and has helped Tyler to a 2nd place (2013) and 8th place (2014) finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.In 2015, her TJC team finished the year ranked #7 in the final NJCAA National Poll.In 2016, the squad advanced to the national tournament and finished 9th in the nation.
