SUMMER 2020
THE EMPIRE STATE MASON MAGAZINE Masonry Never Stops SUMMER 2020 2
From the Grand EastMW WILLIAM M. SARDONE Grand Master212/337-6643
Covid-19, social distancing, postponements, quarantine, masks. These are words that are now part of our everyday
vocabulary. You will notice this issue is much thinner than others. With the continued spread of this virus, we did not feel it was a time to celebrate but a time to reflect on the recent months.
News feeds update daily, if not hourly. Government officials and recognized health organizations continue to grapple with the question of when this virus will subside. As I write this, I cannot tell you what tomorrow will bring. By the time you receive this issue anything regarding this virus will truly be yesterday’s news.
When the “temporary” guidelines were designated at no more than 500 people to assemble in one place, the Grand Secretary and I decided to look ahead. Even though that restriction had a suspense date, we felt we needed a plan to maintain the operation of Grand Lodge in the event the restrictions tightened. As the days continued we widened our plan to encompass various scenarios including our Grand Lodge Session in May. The conversation expanded and we drew in the Deputy Grand Master, RW Richard J. Kessler, the Assistant Grand Secretary, RW Richard Bateman, the Judge Advocate and our Past Grand Masters. With similar precedent set in 1945 by then-Grand Master Charles Froessel during WWII, we were confident we could follow that same course and convene with a reduced number of members.
Then the guidance numbers changed from 500 to 50, to 10, to zero. And the restrictive guideline date extended. We moved all operations of Grand Lodge into a remote mode and among RW Richard Schulz, RW Richard Bateman, Mrs. Klara Bolotovsky and the office team, we are seamlessly continuing the office portion of our Fraternity.
It became evident that I needed to restrict all Masonic Organizations, to postpone all events, meetings and plans. That has since been extended a second time and when you receive this it could be a third time. Our Grand Lodge Session fell within these restrictive timelines. The proclamation in this issue details our decision to postpone this year’s Grand Lodge Session until May 2021. You can also see the precautionary actions we have taken regarding the cancellation of our St. John’s Weekend in June and the summer sessions at Camp Turk.
You have all seen the necessary safety measures of distancing, hand washing, sanitizing, face masks, etc. While we had a plan to shut down the social aspect of Masonry, we also had a plan to adjust into a different venue. That venue? The technology of streaming video, increased use of social media communication, ratcheted-up messaging from the Grand Master, the continuance of our programs and good, old-
fashioned phone calling. Our Lodges are “getting together” on a regular basis, virtually.
These meetings are not tiled but the essence of Masonry is clear and present. These virtual meetings are seeing attendance by members who live states away and have not physically been at Lodge in years. I have attended many of these meetings and there are members as far away as France, Ireland and Germany—just on the ones where I participated.
Our members are not getting together just to catch up. They are comparing notes about who needs assistance and are helping them within the safety guidelines set forth. They are bringing food to hospital workers. They are standing in peoples’ driveways providing entertainment for those unable to leave their homes. They are volunteering their professional services from tax accounting to psychological conferencing.
Our Youth Groups are also staying in touch. DeMolay is having distant gaming nights, distant movie nights and leadership nights. Rainbow and Triangle are trying virtual meetings.
Our Masonic Care Community has the highest level of vulnerability. They continue to take all safety measures and have addressed their situation as it stands now in this issue. Their need for PPE is a continual one. If you able to help them with these resources, it would be very much appreciated. Here is a note from a staff person at the Masonic Care Community:
“The staff in the nursing homes aren’t fighting the same battle that the other nurses and doctors are fighting against COVID-19. Our battle looks a lot different. We’re fighting to protect our elders from the outside world. We’re fighting against depression and loneliness. We are fighting boredom and confusion caused by dementia and Alzheimer’s. We are fighting frustration of family members not being able to visit and families who feel disconnected and fear for their loved one.
“So until this crisis is over, we will give comforting words and do our best to create fun activities that can be done safely. We will hold the iPads and phones so loved ones can see their elder who is unable to communicate and reassure them everything is okay. Staff will visit daily and provide reassurance, pray, sing or just be there to comfort them. We will put on smiles even when our heads are pounding, we are overwhelmed by all the new regulations and added documentation and we are fighting worry, ourselves. We will do what we can to make sure the outside world stays ‘outside’ and our elders stay safe.”
Our Masonic Medical Research Institute is also weighing in and their actions are indicated in this issue as well. Dr. Kontaridis, their Board and I have been communicating to

determine how they can assist. The ability to offer Masonic Courses online was due to go
live in about six months. This feature has been accelerated and is deployed now.
We have held public online forums with medical professionals, elected State officials and more. We have launched a lecture opportunity and as you receive this, we will be having a cooking night for those who have a culinary specialty.
By the time you receive this issue, we will have passed through holidays that have been transformed from congregational reflection to virtual bonding. We have buried our loved ones with only a funeral director at our side and we have seen cases where a mother gives birth without her spouse nearby. Some say these are strange times but as I write this we are in our fourth week of distancing and stay-at-home guidelines. It has been a challenge to adapt, but we have adapted.
All of us handles life’s challenges in our own way. As Masons, we put our hand on a Bible and swore to many things. As such, we entered a network of brotherhood and charity that is being put to the test on a daily basis. As I communicate with our members I can see how the vows we have taken are inculcated into our daily lives.
We are not just men. We are Masons. And Masonry Never Stops!

Further, in accordance with Section 113 Subsection 9 of the Constitutions, each Masonic Lodge shall receive DISPENSATION permitting the same to conduct the election and installation of its respective officers at an appropriate date and time to be announced.
IN CONCLUSION, I ORDER AND DIRECT THIS PROCLAMATION to be distributed to the members of each Lodge, throughout the State of New York, and entered in full upon the Permanent Records thereof.

Dear Grand Master Sardone, Thank you for your interest and questions about how
the MMRI is helping in the fight against COVID-19. Below are the projects MMRI is working on to help humanity combat this pandemic.
a) We have been asked to assess the validity of locally procured COVID test kits using our on-hand equipment. By providing scientific data on novel strategies and therapies to lessen the burden of infection we hope our informed suggestions will help local officials and physicians better manage their patients and reduce the deleterious effects of COVID-19. b) Our staff has been sewing masks and hair bonnets for medical and emergency personnel. I’d like to give special thanks to Ryan Pfeiffer, Mayuri Desai, and Dr. Kumar Chennappan for leading these efforts. c) We have amassed PPE to distribute to the Masonic Care Community to help their efforts to keep our residents safe from this outbreak. A special thank-you goes to RW David Schneeweiss, the Chairman of our Board of Directors, for providing N95 masks to distribute to the MCC in this harrowing time. First, MMRI has reached out to local and state officials to
support the efforts to flatten the curve and reduce the number of infected individuals in our region. Overall, it is a team fight against the COVID infection and the MMRI staff is doing their level best to positively contribute.
Second, and more importantly, the MMRI is moving forward full-speed ahead with COVID-19 related research. Our faculty is submitting grant ideas as well as scientific research manuscripts related to this disease, as we speak. MMRI is working to understand the mechanisms by which COVID-19 worsens both cardiac and pulmonary functions, seeks to identify potential novel therapeutic targets for use in treating patients with the disease, and importantly, is aiming to understand the potential long-term consequences on lung and heart in patients who have recovered from this disease. While we are not equipped to work directly on live infectious viruses (as we are not a biosafety level-3 laboratory and because we reside on a care community campus), the Institute has been actively focused on combating this disease more indirectly using the following multi-pronged research approach:
1. A large proportion of COVID-19 mortality is caused by myocarditis, a rapidly progressing inflammation of the heart. The risk appears to be particularly high in those with pre-existing heart conditions. COVID19 infects cells through a particular receptor, termed ACE2, but the levels
of this receptor have not been comprehensively assessed in human tissue samples to assess potential risk. To address this critical knowledge gap, Dr. Nate Tucker is actively investigating the following lines of research: a) Applying state-of-the-art single cell sequencing technologies to identify the cell types and patient populations that might be of particular risk for COVID-induced myocarditis. b) There has been considerable discussion about the widespread use of ACE inhibitors, a common treatment for hypertension, and whether they might increase the probability of infection due to increased ACE2. We are working in both diseased and healthy human tissue samples using the aforementioned techniques to identify the impact of these pharmaceuticals on ACE2 levels in the heart.
2. It is evident that COVID-19 has direct impact on lung and heart functions and likely causes significant scarring of these tissues, termed fibrosis, in recovering patients. Indeed, most patients that end up on a ventilator as a result of COVID-19 have Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), which poses both an immediate as well as a long term danger to their life due to prevailing tissue damage due to the infection. Moreover, as mentioned above, patients with preexisting cardiac conditions are especially susceptible to COVID-19 infection. Therefore, we have mobilized two additional research programs that will specifically focus on fibrotic tissue damage caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus: a) Drs. Jason McCarthy and Chase Kessinger have moved to investigate ways in which they can lessen this damage to the lungs through an understanding of the mechanisms that underlie ARDS and treatment options to prevent long-term scarring. b) Drs. Maria Kontaridis, Chase Kessinger and Jason McCarthy will also be directly evaluating the molecular signaling pathways that underlie the development of fibrosis in both the lung and heart of patients infected with COVID19, and will determine whether specific-inhibitor targeting of these proteins in cells of the heart and lung using nanoparticle technology can ameliorate the development of scar tissue, and therefore reduce the anticipated long-term deleterious effects on the pulmonary and cardiac function of patients infected by COVID-19.
3) Finally, we are interested in understanding the inflammatory responses associated with this disease. Dr. Sathya Unudarthy will be focused on understanding the
MMRI continues to page 7
THE EMPIRE STATE MASON MAGAZINE SUMMER 2020 7
role of the immune system, the cytokine production and inflammatory responses associated therein in worsening cardiac conditions of patients infected with COVID-19.
This pandemic is fast moving and we are attempting to move this research forward as rapidly as possible. Indeed, I am pleased to also inform everyone that Dr. Tucker’s quick and robust research efforts have already resulted in a manuscript that he is submitting for publication in a top-tier journal just this week. We will keep you all updated on this front.
Thank you for the opportunity to keep you informed on the amazing work that MMRI is doing, especially now, in the face of the biggest health challenge of our lifetimes. Should you have any questions or would like to reach out to MMRI directly for more information—or much-needed donations—please do not hesitate to contact us directly.
Best wishes, Maria I. Kontaridis, Ph.D.

Masonic Care Community
As we continue to navigate COVID-19 together, the safety and health of our residents and our employees at the
Masonic Care Community is our most important priority. The MCC team has done an amazing job responding to this healthcare crisis. We have been monitoring and following directives and precautions provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the New York State Department of Health (DOH), the Oneida County Health Department and LeadingAge New York.
We instituted a no-visitor policy for the Health Pavilion and Wiley Hall, except for compassionate care situations, and implemented a screening policy for employees at the beginning of each shift and again if an employee’s shift exceeds eight hours. We provided employees and healthcare staff with trainings around new preventive measures to follow in response to the virus. Our strong housekeeping and cleaning protocols continue and employees follow hand hygiene protocol and are currently wearing health grade medical masks (PPE) throughout their shifts. We have implemented safe distancing measures and residents are remaining in their households. All of these precautions have been put into place to try to protect and safeguard our residents and staff.
This has been extremely time-consuming and intensive work and the days ahead will most likely present even greater
challenges. On March 27 the first MCC staff member tested positive for COVID-19 and this news caused tremendous concern. I assure you we are taking important steps to try and mitigate the risks to our community and will do so for any future confirmed cases on campus. In addition, we will continue to implement precautions from the leading healthcare agency experts in fighting the virus and we will remain vigilant with our infection control procedures.
I would like to share with my Brother Masons that the staff at the Masonic Care Community have been extraordinary, as have our residents. Every day I am hearing about the great work they do, including employees who are staying late, coming in early and working extra shifts. They are making a profound difference!
Though it has been difficult for our residents and their families to be apart, many are communicating via Skype and FaceTime as a way to stay connected. They have joined in our efforts to make the campus safer and we are grateful for their understanding and support.
We are also grateful for the Fraternity’s unwavering support of our beloved campus. Please continue to care for yourselves and your families, and know that we will work through this together.
