Letter From the Director Once again, I am happy and thankful to be able to announce that you, the residents of this community, have overwhelmingly passed our budget. As in the past, we will strive to identify and fulfill the needs of our population as they emerge and trans- form. I would like to take a minute (hardly enough) to thank our retiring Board of Trustees member, Jane Santarpia, for all her years of hard work and hard choices all performed with simple morality and easy fellowship. We’ll miss you and, of course, wish you the best. We are happy to welcome newcomer Brett Algera to the Board and Laura Ronayne back for her unbelievable 31 st year. As our staff prepares for our Summer Reading Programs (for all ages), I’d like to talk about the theme “A Universe of Stories” and how it applies to not just reading, but to our community. The library, of course, holds countless volumes of print and digital stories, but having been part of the Greenwood Lake Community for over 80 years, our staff and our patrons have even more. Staff stories range from helping an Irish tourist track down a long lost relative to being one of 6 librarians chasing a terrified field mouse through the stacks. Patrons share their recommendations, opinions, mem- ories and occasionally, heartbreak. We consider ourselves lucky to be the repository for these histories. Recently, some longtime residents donated quite a number of local history artifacts including many photos from the 70s. The people in them are of Lake heritage but while they are familiar to us, many are unidentified. We need your help. We’re going to keep one album at a time at the front desk. The next time you’re in, take a few minutes and leaf through it. You might find a beloved aunt, an unfriendly neighbor or even yourself sporting a hairstyle that includes “wings”. And while you reminisce, jot down that name (we’ll provide the paper). You’ll help us preserve our own “Universe of Stories” for generations to come. We’d like to thank Scott and Brenda Pender for their generous donation of local historical artifacts. We had successful raffles partnering with both Winslow Therapeutic Duck Derby and the HIFF! Thanks to both organizations! We’re grateful that Ms. E. Karlson thought of us again in honor of her brother Patrick Egan. Thanks in advance to our own Greenwood Lake Ice Cream Shack, for help-ing sweeten our upcoming Summer Readers. We are so thankful to Barbara Wright and the Friends of the Hillsboro Library in Hillsboro Oregon! Barbara grew up here and wanted to give back to our library for being a memorable part of her childhood. We are always working to continue that tradition! Thanks Barbara and Friends!

Book Lovers’ Club Review — by Pat Nolan Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Funny, heart-warming, sad….all of these can be used to describe Eleanor Oliphant, but the words I would choose to best describe this novel are: immensely satisfying. Eleanor is a character unto herself. Eccentric, selfish, demanding and apparently unlovable, Eleanor (and the reader) embark on a journey that brings her through her dark past and into a place where there is joy and redemption. The layers of her past are slowly revealed through her interactions with a varied group of strangers who show her kindness for perhaps the first time in her life. Having these strangers become her friends is what finally is able to save her. This book made me laugh, cry and cheer for Eleanor. A one-of-a-kind heroine, she will do the same for you. In the end, it is an truly uplifting story. Cookbook Book Club with Carol—(Tues., June 12th, 6:30-8:00 p.m.) For info, call the Front Desk at Ext. 101. Participants cook one recipe from the cookbook to share with the group. (No Club July or August)
