I have been contemplating for some time as to what I am going to write in this my first newsletter as president. As usual my mind was blank. But as I gave it more and more thought when I was sitting in the adoration chapel, the word “thankful” kept creeping into my mind. Why thankful? Because looking back at the relatively short time I have been a member I have experi-enced many people and things to be thankful for.

I’m thankful for Bob Turner’s faithful and dedicated service to the Portland Serra club and for all the previous officers over the years from our clubs founding until now. Their relentless service kept this club viable and healthy since 1939. That’s quite an accomplishment. I’m thankful for the dedicated board of directors who keep the club on a straight course. I’m thankful for all the activities the club provides for priests, sisters, seminarians and young men and women in the Archdio-cese.

I’m thankful for our Archbishop and past Archbishops who seem to always fit our agenda into their busy and crowded schedule and the support we receive from the archdiocese and their employees who support our mission in a myriad of ways.

I’m thankful for all the priests and religious who champion our cause in their parishes and those who served as past chaplains.

June 19, 2019 - Charter Day Celebration of Portland Serra Club’s 82nd Anniversary. Our Emcee, Ed O’Hanlon, was unable to attend and our President and a few Serrans were at the SI Convention but understand the club celebrated the 82nd Anniversary and installed new members.

June 5, 2019 - Our guest speaker was Sarah Kresse – Office Manager, Office of the Vicar for Clergy and Ministry Personnel for the Portland Archdiocese. Sarah is from eastern Washington, attended the University of Washington and studied Wildlife Science and Forestry. She was actively involved in Campus Ministry while at UW. Forestry brought her to Oregon and she started volun-teering in youth ministry at Queen of Peace. As a result, she decided to go full-time in parish ministry. She was blessed to serve as Youth and Young Adult Ministry Coordinator at St. Joseph’s in Salem. Became involved with vocation ministry and truly thank-ful to work with our seminarians, priests, religious, and promote the universal call to holiness. Sarah has been blessed to attend four World Youth Days – Paris, Madrid, Krakow, and Panama; with three popes – Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict, and Pope Francis. She shared that each World Youth Day has been an amazing experience. It is something that renews her faith life and excites her about being Catholic.
