WELCOME TO THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC’SSUMMER SEASON

This season we mark 200 years since the publication of the iconic gothic novel, Frankenstein – The Modern Prometheus, with five new and exciting mini-operas bringing together the talents of RCM composers and singers. On a similarly exuberant scale, our annual Festival of Percussion is an all-day extravaganza and features one of the world’s leading

drummers, Mark Guiliana.

Our Orchestral Masterworks series includes two great masterpieces of the repertoire: Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite. Polonsky Visiting Professor of Violin Maxim Vengerov also returns to lead an orchestral masterclass on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. We see the final concert in our Russian Chamber Series in association with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and Super String Sunday features two of the great solo string canons - JS Bach’s unaccompanied suites and partitas plus Ysaÿe’s sonatas for violin.

Our performers are also out and about this season. At Cadogan Hall, as part of our annual residency, Pinchas Zukerman gives an unmissable workshop with RCM ensembles, alongside two chamber concerts. Over at Wigmore Hall, we present two showcases, and at Southbank Centre, RCM musicians and professors feature as part of their festival devoted to Ligeti.

We round off the summer season with a double bill of British opera – Peter Maxwell Davies’ classic one act opera The Lighthouse alongside the critically acclaimed opera by Huw Watkins In the Locked Room, a fantastical story based on a work by Thomas Hardy.

Under the baton of Martin André, RCM Concerto Competition winners Yume Fujise and Jamal Aliyev bring to life Brahms’ thrilling Double Concerto. Alongside, the RCM Philharmonic presents Bartók’s colourful Dance Suite, a work written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the unification of Hungarian cities Buda and Pest.

The RCM Festival of Percussion returns with one of the world’s leading drummers, Mark Guiliana. Admired across the spectrum from jazz to rock to electronic music, he has appeared on a string of acclaimed recordings including David Bowie’s final album.

The jam-packed day features West End percussionists Damien Manning and James Powell, plus the brilliant Ensemble Bash. For orchestral enthusiasts, timpanist John Chimes and the Percussion and Timpani sections of The Royal Opera House will be joining us. Drummers can try out our performance zone, see a BAPAM specialist, or have a free lesson with an expert teacher.

There are plenty of activities for families too and an incredible lunchtime concert featuring the Coldstream Guards presented by O Duo. The Festival also includes a trade fair featuring leading UK instrument manufacturers.

From charming baroque dances to incredible feats of virtuosity, hear RCM violinists and cellists perform the complete solo works of JS Bach and Ysaÿe.

Often seen in the shadows of the Russian giants of the time, the music of Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a Polish Jew who emigrated to Russia, is only now being recognised for his unique musical style. Here his works are paired alongside chamber pieces by his good friend Shostakovich and Prokofiev’s Trapeze quintet, written for a travelling troupe in Paris.

This concert is part of the Philharmonia Orchestra's Voices of Revolution: Russia 1917 series.

Acclaimed theatre director Stephen Unwin joins forces with Michael Rosewell for two thrilling and mysterious operas by Peter Maxwell Davies and Huw Watkins. In Maxwell Davies’ chamber opera, three lighthouse keepers mysteriously disappear from a remote Scottish Isle on a windy and rain-lashed night in 1900. What unfolds is based on a chilling and haunting real-life account found in Craig Mair’s book A Star for Seamen: The Stevenson Family of Engineers. Prepare yourselves for an equally gripping psychological drama in RCM graduate Huw Watkins’ In the Locked Room. Described by the composer as ‘inward-looking and reflective, grappling with deep emotion’, this one-act opera explores the power of the mind and its influence on a person’s actions.

Their construction, decoration, sound and materials reflect broader social and economic directions of their place of origin, and often define the musical traits of those who use them. This inaugural professorial lecture investigates the various connections between musical instruments and some key moments in the social history of Britain.

TRANSPORTBY TUBE The nearest underground station is South Kensington, which is about ten minutes’ walk from the RCM. South Kensington is on the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines. Gloucester Road and High Street Kensington stations are both approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the RCM.

BY RAIL The nearest mainline railway stations are Paddington and Victoria.

BY BUS Buses 9, 10, 52 and 452 pass the Royal Albert Hall, the 70 runs along Queen’s Gate and the 360 stops very close to the RCM on Prince Consort Road. Many other services run to South Kensington, Kensington High Street or Knightsbridge from surrounding areas.

BY ROAD There is metered parking on Prince Consort Road and the surrounding area. It costs £3.70 per hour for a maximum of four hours and is free after 6.30pm and on Sundays. There are a limited number of disabled parking spaces and designated motorbike bays in the surrounding area.

FOOD AND DRINKThe RCM Restaurant offers a great range of hot and cold snacks and beverages each weekday between 9am and 4pm, as well as delicious full lunch options between 12pm–2pm.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND RECORDINGSFilming, recording and commercial photography are not permitted during concerts and events without prior written permission. Photographs may be taken during applause following a performance unless otherwise notified. Many events at the RCM are filmed and recorded. By attending a performance, you consent to any photography, filming or sound recording which may include you as a member of the audience. VISIT USACCESSThe Royal College of Music has easy access to most areas and is fully accessible via lifts and ramps. There are spaces for wheelchair users and seats for their companions in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and Britten Theatre. Please contact the Box Office in advance for bookings and directions. Guide and companion dogs may be taken anywhere on site. MAIN ENTRANCE There are eight steps up from the pavement and two inside the main doors.
