This landmark exhibition is a rare opportunity to view some of the artist’s most iconic paintings alongside hidden treasures exhibited for the first time. The Mostyn Manuscripts: a Centennial ExhibitionHengwrt, 21.07.18 - 8.12.18The National Library of Wales acquired an initial tranche of manuscripts from Mostyn Hall, Flintshire in 1918. To mark the centenary of this notable acquisition, the Library will be showcasing some of its most valuable Mostyn treasures this season. They include early printed books, and manuscripts in Welsh, Latin and English, among which are Gutun Owain’s remarkable 15th-century medical compendium, and the monumental Chronicle of Elis Gruffudd, ‘Soldier of Calais’. Mostyn Hall retains some items of historic significance, and with Lord Mostyn’s kind permission, a few choice items – seldom seen by the public – will also be shown in the exhibition. This is a rare opportunity to view treasures from one of the finest private collections ever formed in Wales.

ExhibitionsCome and explore the National Library’s remarkable collections on display in our galleries. Whether it’s your first visit, or you’ve been here before, you’re assured of a warm welcome. All our exhibitions are free and families are welcome.

‘In Search of Mary Shelley’ Professor Fiona SampsonAs part of the bicentenary celebrations of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Professor Sampson, author of the critically acclaimed ‘In Search of Mary Shelley’, explores Romantic ideas of selfhood, modernity and biography through Mary Shelley’s own life and work, revealing how these helped the teenager create Frankenstein. The young Mary longed to live in idyllic seclusion with Percy Bysshe in Cwm Elan, near Rhayader, Powys. Later, West Wales acquired bitter connotations after her half-sister Fanny killed herself in Swansea. Still, Mary was part of Romanticism’s embrace of the Welsh landscape, if not of its lived realities.Free admission by ticketE

Film: Tír na nÓg: an Irish and Welsh CineconcertThis fine documentary from a trio of Welsh journalists – Y Cymro’s John Roberts Williams, Geoff Charles and Wil Vaughan – presents an invaluable social record of the West of Ireland in 1947. The film records the journey from Wales to Dublin and then to Spiddal in Co. Galway where the travellers are welcomed into the home of an Irish farming family, the Ó Neachtains. The film was the subject of a restoration collaboration between the IFI Irish Film Archive and Wales Film Archive in 1995, and was premiered that year at the Galway Film Fleadh. Now, more than 20 years later, the film will be re-presented in a newly digitised version with live music accompaniment. The programme will be supplemented by other short films from the IFI Irish Film Archive tracing Welsh and Irish connections. The silent films will be accompanied by traditional Irish musicians, Saileog Ní Cheannabháin and Pádraic Keane, who will draw on the musical heritage of the West of Ireland where the film is set. A Crowdsourcing Platform for WalesDuring 2017, the Library embarked on an exciting new project to develop a purpose built online platform that would offer access to the national collections via remote volunteering opportunities. The recently launched crowdsourcing platform is enabling us to engage with volunteers across Wales and beyond through interactive interpretation of some of our nation’s treasures. Online volunteers are already helping the Library to unlock the hidden history of the

Great War by transcribing and indexing the Cardiganshire Great War Tribunals Appeals Records. These were the tribunals that dealt with appeals against conscription to the armed forces on personal, economic, moral or religious grounds. The Cardiganshire Tribunals collection is unique in Wales and one of only four of its kind that have survived throughout the United Kingdom. The crowdsourcing platform displays the digitised images and supplies predetermined fields for inputting data and descriptions of

the images; once volunteers have transcribed the records, the resulting index will be searchable by name, address, date, etc. offering a rich source of information for family members, researchers and anyone interested in the history of the Great War. The platform has been designed with the flexibility that will enable it to be applied over the long term to a variety of NLW collections, including photographs, manuscripts and journals.

So, if you’re interested in geneaology, social history or collections of national significance, and if you can spare us half an hour or half a day of your time, we hope you’ll join our growing community of online volunteers by visiting: crowd.library.walesFor further information, or for guidance on how to use the website, please contact the Volunteers’ Co-ordinator:[email protected]

THE COLLECTIONS FUND - Building the future To ensure that our collecting work is to continue effectively and our collections remain current, we will have to establish long term sustainable sources of income. One way of doing this is our new Collections Fund. The money will be invested in order to earn income and it is this income which will be available to be spent on new items for the collections. If you would like to support us either regularly or by making a one-off gift, contributing on-line is easy:www.llgc.org.uk/the-collection-fund
