RESEARCH STUDY PROGRESS

Dr. Larissa Myaskovsky had the

opportunity to present a poster

based on the work of our research

study at the 17th Annual American

Transplant Congress in Chicago, IL

on May 1st, 2017. Entitled,

“Protocol of the KTFT-TALK study

to reduce racial disparities in kid-

ney transplant evaluation and living

donor kidney transplantation” the

poster highlighted the study’s re-

search design and methods. It was the first in what we hope to be

many publications and presentations that come out of our re-

search. The May 1st presentation generated a lot of interest from

transplantation researchers and clinicians all over the world and

may lead to national collaborations with other transplant centers

across the US or with transplant centers in other countries. During

the session, Dr. Myaskovsky was particularly proud to report the

high response rates for our research interviews from all our study

participants. She is really grateful for the hard work of the research

A recent Warner

Brothers movie,

“Going in Style,” fea-

tured kidney health

and organ donation

on the big screen!

This blockbuster com-

edy tells the story of three lifelong friends – Willie

(Morgan Freeman), Joe (Michael Caine) and Al (Alan

Arkin) – who plan a heist on the bank that absconded

with their pension funds. Meanwhile, Willie keeps his

dialysis and kidney health under wraps until he realiz-

es he needs a kidney transplant.

The National Kidney Foundation partnered with Warn-

er Brothers to promote the movie’s release in April,

which coincided with National Kidney Month. The pro-

motion included raising awareness about the NKF pro-

gram “The Big Ask: The Big Give,” a free educational

program that teaches patients how to ask friends and

family about living kidney donation. For more infor-

mation, please visit: www.kidney.org/news/kidney-

health-going-to-hollywood.

Each year, faith groups across the United States edu-cate the public about organ, eye, and tissue donation by observing the National Donor

Sabbath. To learn how you can get involved in your community, please visit www.donatelife.net/nds.

Preparation: To make the marinade, measure

the peach jam into a small microwave safe bowl

and heat for 10 to 15 seconds to liquefy. Add the

olive oil, lemon juice, Mrs. Dash® herb seasoning

and salt. Stir until well blended. Rinse the chicken

thighs and pat dry with a paper towel. Cut each

thigh into 4 pieces and place in a zip-top bag. Add

3 tablespoons marinade to the chicken pieces.

(Reserve 2 tablespoons marinade to use on vege-

tables.) Seal the zip-top bag and refrigerate to

marinate. Cut the vegetables into even bite-sized

pieces for the kebabs (zucchini-8 slices; yellow

squash-8 slices; red pepper-16 pieces; onion-

varies). Place them in a medium bowl and add

reserved marinade. Stir to coat the vegetable

pieces. Thread the vegetables and chicken pieces

onto skewers (4 large or 8 small skewers). Heat

the grill to medium heat. Place the skewers on

the grill and cook covered for 12 to 15 minutes.

TRAVELING TIPS FOR DIALYSIS PATIENTS

For some dialysis patients travel can lead to a boost in morale and well-being, but may require many weeks of planning. Most dialysis centers are experienced with arranging hemodialysis or peri-toneal treatments away from home and can help ensure you receive quality care when you are traveling. Please visit, www.kidney.org/atoz/content/traveltip, to help answer some frequently asked travel questions.

TIPS FOR CONSIDERING LIVING DONATION

This NKF initiative illustrates different ways to ask your loved ones about donating a kidney. The initiative emphasizes how to make the ask, provides samples of letters to friends and family, and five ways to inspire living kidney donation.
