the golf course is the centerpiece of arlington’s first city park. arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the arlington rotary Club.

the site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby at&t Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. the 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length.

the course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here.

Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player.

the clubhouse off ers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities.

With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

Featurelast June, Keep arlington Beautiful and the arlington Parks and recreation Department announced a volunteer campaign to clean up litter from public right-of-ways, such as parks, streets, and trails.

the adopt-a-Spot program is up and running and off to a strong start. organizations, businesses, teams and families have come together adopting spots in North arlington, aiding in the continuing beautification of the american Dream City.

the Bishop Family is one of arlington’s first adopt-a-Spot participants.

“our family has lived in North arlington for over 15 years. We are excited to have the opportunity to do our part to make arlington a wonderful place to live, work, and play for all,” Mike Bishop said.

the Bishops have taken the lead on adopting the area along North green oaks Boulevard from Cooper Street to Collins Street, both east and west bound.

the texas rangers Baseball Club is one of the first business organizations to partner with Keep arlington Beautiful’ s adopt-a-Spot program. the rangers have committed to maintain the lake Holtz area near globe life Park in arlington.

So far, other adoptees include the Westra Consultants, ut- arlington alpha Phi omega- theta tau, and Kleinfelder Inc.

the adopt-a-Spot program is perfect for organizations, businesses, churches, schools, neighborhood associations, troops and families looking to get involved and give back to the city in which they live. adopt-a-Spot adoptees will receive a certificate of appreciation, website recognition, and may purchase a sign at a minimal fee to be installed at the location recognizing the adoption*.

Keep arlington Beautiful received $2,000 in grant funding from H-E-B and the Central Market’s green Bag grants to aid in the litter cleanup effort.

* Fee may apply

an on-line application form along with guidelines on how you can adopt a spot is available at the Keep arlington Beautiful webpage at keeparlingtonbeautiful.com under the adopt- a- Spot tab.

Construction of the Phase I park improvements are expected to begin in april. the 66-acre linear park, which could open as soon as april 2017, will offer nearly a mile-long hike and bike trail, about two dozen parking spaces, park benches, a covered playground for ages 2-5 and 5-12, swings, a bike rack and a pavilion available for rent.

the future park is located between Pecan Street and Collins Street, east of the university of texas at arlington. Center Street runs through the park, which is located south of downtown arlington and also surrounded by several neighborhoods.

Julia Burgen Park is a dream that has been years in the making. Empty streets and crumbling sidewalks are the only signs left that the future park site was once residential neighborhoods. In 1999, the City of arlington used federal funding to purchase and tear down more than 100 flood-prone homes along Johnson Creek.

Contractor 2l Construction will soon remove those abandoned asphalt streets and sidewalks to make way for the $1.7 million in park improvements, which arlington voters approved funding for in 2008.

as part of the Johnson Creek Corridor Plan, arlington plans to eventually create a series of linked linear parks that stretch from gateway Park near the Parks at arlington Mall up to the richard greene linear Park near at&t Stadium and globe life Park. the Julia Burgen Park will help eventually close the gap between Vandergriff Park and Meadowbrook Park.

as part of its priority to Champion great Neighborhoods, the arlington City Council supports projects such as linear parks that are designed to improve the quality of life for residents.

“they are very important within an urban setting because they almost function as a city’s lungs. that’s how the city can breathe. With all that development happening all around, parks and open spaces are extremely essential,” Mandlekar said. “they help preserve natural habitat and are very important corridors for the wildlife, especially within an urban setting. Julia Burgen Park will also function as a significant linkage within the residential communities and uta campus.”

the park is named for former arlington City Council member Julia Burgen, well-known for her environmental activism.

“Julia Burgen dramatically increased the environmental awareness of the overall community and the political community – from protections we have now for trees to expanded landscaping requirements,” said Donna Darovich, Parks and recreation Board Chair.

o.K. Carter, arlington historian and former publisher of the original arlington Citizen-Journal, is one of many left impressed by Burgen’s passion for nature.”

“She outlined a couple of then-dramatic ideas that included landscaping requirements and signage limitations before launching into her favorite topic, mitigating tree loss and planting more of them. lots more. Very soon she would run for the arlington Council and become a champion for environmental enhancements. I planted the dogwood in the newspaper courtyard. It’s now fully grown and offers a seasonal explosion of aroma and white-blossomed beauty. Multiply that little tree by a few thousand and you get just a little sense of Burgen’s impact on this community,” Carter said.

the mission of Keep arlington Beautiful (KaB), gold Star affiliate of Keep texas Beautiful, is to educate and engage the arlington community to take responsibility for improving their environment. KaB members strongly encourage community involvement and environmental stewardship. Become part of why arlington is the american Dream City by getting involved in volunteer efforts, attending local environmental classes, becoming a Board member and liking us on Facebook. In 2014, the arlington Parks and recreation Department and Keep arlington Beautiful logged 58 volunteer events performed by 3,900 volunteers. this year the volume of volunteer commitment has significantly increased, estimating figures to double by the end of 2015, meaning great things for the City of arlington. Keep arlington Beautiful is entering a challenging and exciting time, as economic pressures on our City increases, and the demand for our services continues to rise. the tradition of high quality service provision and activism related to litter abatement, beautification, and awareness to the residents of the City of arlington is evident in KaB’s work.

the City of arlington introduced a new program to help fight litter and beautify the City. the Mobile litter unit is a trailer loaded with community clean-up supplies that is available for organizations, businesses and neighborhoods to reserve free of charge to aid in beautification. along with this program, KaB and the City of arlington launched a pilot adopt- a-Spot Program in July 2015, to focus on public spaces, parks, trails, and right- of –ways. under KaB’s plan, civic groups, schools, business, neighborhood associations and other organizations within the city limits of arlington can apply to “adopt” an area that is convenient to them or that they use on a frequent basis that needs periodic clean-up. as the program gains momentum,

KaB encourages community members to take action and join in the mission to Keep arlington Beautiful.

For more information on our volunteer opportunities, please visit us on or webpage, the volunteer tab of our Facebook page or feel free to email [email protected]! to reserve the Mlu for your next community clean-up or to learn more about adopt-a-Spot, email [email protected] or call 817.459.5477
