This week-long workshop for all levels of experience starts with basic wire wrapping, chain making, and jump rings; then moves on to head pins, ear wires, and simple soldering and hand-forming techniques. Students will complete several beautiful pieces of jewelry. Please call the front desk at the Carbondale campus for tool and supply list. The $40 fee covers the cost of metals and can be paid at the Lappala Center front desk.

Lab kit purchase required. Student participation in a group "Star Party" field trip is required for this class. See the syllabus for details.

This class will cover a variety of metalsmithing techniques with an emphasis on jewelry making. Students will learn how to use hand tools, torches, files, saws, and a dapping block to bend, forge, melt, solder and finish metal wire and sheet. This is a great course for people who would like to learn how to wire wrap, make their own simple jewelry findings and begin adding metal to their work. A supply list is available at the Lappala Center; supplies should be purchased before the first day of class. The $70 fee covers the cost of metal supplies and can be paid at the Lappala Center front desk. Metals supply cost is not associated with the tool kit supply list.

This two-day American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) course covers babysitting as a business, safety and injury prevention, leadership, playtime, CPR and first aid, and basic care giving skills. These skills are not only essential but will make students more marketable, safe and comfortable in a job that should be rewarding and fun. This course will focus on beginning and intermediate rafting skills and is designed for adult learners. All field days will take place on local rivers. The non-refundable course charge includes transportation, van shuttles, and expendable supplies. All rafting equipment is provided, including life-jackets. The first meeting will take place in a classroom at the Glenwood Center on 6/14 at 6p, and will cover course logistics, equipment and introduce rafting skills.

This class emphasizes technical climbing in an alpine environment. Topics will include traveling over mixed terrain (snow/ice/rock), multi-pitch climbing techniques on rock and snow, and safe travel in the alpine environment. There is a mandatory meeting at the Spring Valley Climbing Wall from 5p-6:30p on 6/22, and a field trip departing at 8a on 6/24 and returning at 6:30p on 6/26. The non-refundable course charge includes access fee, campground fees, transportation, group camping equipment and climbing gear.

Learn to climb in world-class areas with expert instructors. This beginner-level climbing course emphasizes fun and safety. Topics of instruction include climbing basics: tying knots, belaying, repelling, and climbing movements. There is a mandatory meeting at the Spring Valley Climbing Wall on 5/25 from 5p-9:30p, and another at a local outdoor climbing area on 6/1, 5p-9:30p. Outdoor climbing day trips will be held on 6/4 & 6/5, 8a-6:30p. The non-refundable course charge includes access fee, transportation, and climbing gear.

Increase flexibility and improve muscle tone through proper exercise techniques using mat work. Body alignment, breathing, work on the abdominals, hips and thighs will be emphasized.

In this seminar, students will survey the different forms of Islam practiced currently in different countries. By examining the history of Islam, these differences will be accounted for and understood in the context of colonialism, globalization and the various regimes shaping each Muslim society. Class will study key passages from the Qur'an, hadith, and rich poetic tradition of Sufism, and cover Muslim observances and the threat each country faces from Islamists, jihadists and other internal conflicts.

This course is designed to give teachers a chance to pick up some valuable Spanish skills and not give up their fun summer plans. The class will meet daily for 5 hours a day, creating an immersive learning environment. Class will focus on useful vocabulary that will help teacher-student and parent-teacher communication, basic grammar structure, present and past tense, as well as some common idioms and slang. Learn about sport-climbing in one of the world-class areas in our backyard! This class emphasizes face climbing skills and leading sport routes. Topics will include building anchors, and lead climbing on sport routes. There is a mandatory meeting at the Spring Valley Climbing Wall from 5-7p on 7/14, as well as one field trip departing at 8a on 7/15 and returning at 6:30p on 7/17. Each class has both a minimum and maximum number of students who may enroll. It’s best to register early to ensure your spot, and we ask you to register no later than two business days prior to the start of class to ensure minimum enrollment is met.

Registration for all summer classes begins Monday, April 25.
