Do you believe in the value of art education? Do you believe
in our vision for a Community Visual Art Center? If so, cast
your positive vote by making a donation. We are asking every
SAA member to show their support for our vision by making a
donation of any amount. Of course, we still need to raise $1
million dollars, so the more generous your donation, the
closer we will be to our goal. BUT, MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE
NEED YOUR PARTICIPATION. Before we turn our fundraising
efforts to the community at large we want to be able to show
that we have the support of our members. We would love to be able to say that 100% of
our membership is behind our vision for high quality studios and new media at the SAA.
If you support us, please make your donation now.
If you are unfamiliar with our plans, I invite you to take a look at the Embrace the Future
section of the website, www.springfieldart.org or stop by and ask us to walk you
through the plans. I love to talk about our vision to be the best visual art center in
central Illinois. If you don’t support our plan, I need to hear your concerns. Do not
hesitate to contact me and tell me why you think upgrading our current studios and
building a new ceramics lab, a glass studio, and multi-purpose studio that could serve
1000 more students per year is not a good idea. It isn’t easy; but that alone does not
make it a bad idea. Please, if you support this effort, Raise Your Hand and Be Counted
with a donation and/or pledge of any amount to the Centennial Capital Campaign.
Together we will build a piece of a creative future for Springfield.
Having now served as President of the Springfield Art
Association for one month, I have come to realize what I
in essence always knew to be true from serving on the
Board of Directors for the past three years – namely, that
the Springfield Art Association is a very vibrant and
exciting organization. It is also an organization that is
blessed with an enthusiastic and extremely qualified staff
and led by a uniquely diverse Board of Directors who
dedicate both their time and talents for the benefit of
moving the organization forward. Given those things, it makes it very easy and
enjoyable to serve as the President. It also should make it very easy and enjoyable
for everyone to promote the organization to others for membership and support
through volunteering and financial donations. I am trying in this coming year to
foster both those attributes, while promoting the Springfield Art Association to the
community.
As with many successful not-for-profit organizations, when they are successful, that
means their membership grows, their programs grow, and their budgets grow. In
addition, their facilities then need to continue to expand in order to meet the needs
driven by their successes. In that light, the Board of Directors has begun the process
of making an effort to personally connect with each member of the Association to
request their support for the Centennial Capital Campaign. We have surpassed
$1,400,000, the halfway point. The amount we have collected has been achieved
with just about 20% of the membership participation. Therefore, I encourage you,
when you receive a call from a Board member, to consider the benefits of the
Springfield Art Association and what it can continue to bring to the Springfield visual
arts community and ask that you please consider financial support for the Campaign.
With everyone’s help, the organization can continue its successes and continue to
grow its programs.

to our retiring board members!
The Art Association is pleased to welcome David Rolf as its new President of the Board of Directors. David and his family have been members of the SAA for more than twenty years and have dedicated countless hours in many capacities to this organization’s growth.
Occupation: Attorney
Family: Wife Alice, daughters Debbie (24), Kathy (24), Christy (21) and Carrie (17).
SAA Member Since: 1991
Hobbies: Golf, hunting, fishing, visiting my children, and working on the Springfield Art Association grounds.
Favorite thing about the SAA: Not being from Springfield, my wife and I became involved because we liked the people. It is a diverse group. You do not have to be an artist, or famous to be a member, and enjoy all the Springfield Art Association does.
On Being the Father of This Year’s Ball Queen: It feels great. Our family has been involved for over twenty years – BAB is a great family event that recognizes our volunteers here at the Springfield Art Association. We are honored to be the Queen’s family and join with the Kanes to further Springfield Art Association goals.
Looking Forward to as Board President: Watching the growing excitement of the Capitol Campaign, which will allow the Springfield Art Association to expand its educational opportunities and restore the second floor of Edwards Place.
What David Wishes More People Knew about the SAA: It is not an elitist organization. You can be new to Springfield, and do not need a lot of money to join and be involved with the Springfield Art Association. We welcome your time, your volunteer commitment, and you will gain a great group of people to socialize and be involved with, all while helping Springfield visual arts community.

Thank you to John Bucari and the Brinkerhoff Home Foundation for the donation of four side chairs, two antique lamps, a center table, and a selection of 19th century magazines. We
appreciate the contribution to our mission of bringing the past to life at Edwards Place.
Special “servant’s tour” to be offered in July From 1843-1909, Edwards Place was not just home to the
Edwards family; it was home to a series of domestic servants
whose labor kept the house running smoothly and made it
possible for the Edwardses to offer the hospitality for which
they were famous. These individuals tended to be young Irish
immigrant women who came in search of a better life.
On July 25, we invite you to learn more about the lives of the
Edwards’s servants on a special servant’s tour. Parlor maid
Mary Sage will take you through the house and describe her
duties as well as give her candid opinion of the Edwards family.
The tour will include visits to the cellar and attic—”working
spaces” that are not usually accessible to the public.

CENTENNIAL CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Don and Carole Walton: Making a Difference at the SAA for 46 Years
In their 46 years of membership at the Springfield Art Association, Don and Carole Walton have just about done it all. Beginning with a stint volunteering on the mailing committee, Carole has been the chair of the mailing committee, social chair in charge of the opening receptions, co-chair of the Beaux Arts Ball, and co-chair of the Fine Arts Fair. In addition, she has held every position on the Board’s executive committee except treasurer and was Board president in 1992-1993. Don has been on the Board of Directors several times over the years and was the Building and Grounds chair for 10 years. As the Architect, Don was involved in renovation work in the 1970’s and has been involved in a number of projects on the SAA campus since that time.
Currently Don and Carole serve as chairs of the Centennial Capital Campaign. Under their leadership, the SAA renovated the MG Nelson
Family gallery, restored the first floor of Edwards Place to its antebellum appearance, and upgraded lighting in the Condell Studio. The Capital Campaign is now concentrating its efforts on fundraising for a new Community Visual Arts Center that will provide a central location for all of the many arts groups in Springfield. The campaign is currently half way to the goal to achieve this dream.
Don and Carole’s dedication to the Springfield Art Association extends to their children as well and grandchildren as well. Their daughter Kristin, Queen of the Beaux Arts Ball in 1989, volunteers at exhibit receptions and the Fine Art Fair. Their son has frequently helped with Facilities and Grounds. Several of their grandchildren have been involved in the Ball and attend summer camp each year.
Looking back on their 46 years of SAA membership, Carole says “our favorite memories include making so many wonderful friends, participating in the many events and watching the SAA grow. We were especially honored to receive the Volunteer Service Award from the SAA at the 74th Beaux Arts Ball in 2005, and the Mayor’s Award for the Arts in 2007.”
Thank you, Don and Carole, for all you have done and all you continue to do for the SAA.
Raise Your Hand & Be Counted! We are thrilled with the progress we have made. The Gallery is fully renovated, the first
floor of Edwards Place is restored to its mid-19th century grandeur and the Condell Studio ceiling and lights have been replaced. And we are well on our way to even more improvements….approximately one-third of the funds have been raised to restore the
second story of Edwards Place and nearly half the funds have been raised for the building of a new ceramics lab and glass studios.
We are asking all members to contribute to show that the SAA is important to you and that you believe in the importance of a strong Community Visual Arts Center. Our goal is 100% member participation so that we can go out to area businesses and the community
at large to show we have our members behind us and to demonstrate that everyone believes. A donation of any amount will allow you to be counted in our participation
drive. Your participation will help build a new ceramics lab and glass blowing studio. Help us make art for everyone in Springfield!

CENTENNIAL CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Thank you to our studio and gallery donors to date! We have raised nearly half of the much-needed funds to build a state-of-the-art 6,840 square foot studio thanks to our donors listed below. Please add your name below and join us in saying you believe in the future of the Springfield Art
Association: Raise Your Hand & Be Counted!
Our School of Art is outgrowing our current studio space to the point of turning away students. We have designed a new building to house a new ceramics lab, a glass blowing studio, and a multiuse open studio. With this new space we will be
able to serve twice the amount of students thus providing 1,000 more students each year access to the best art education in central Illinois. We will also be able to offer more classes and unique media for our sold-out youth summer
art camps. The current jewelry/metals lab will be expanded and upgraded as well providing much needed ventilation and improved lighting and heating/cooling systems.
Contact Mary Beth Burke, SAA Development Coordinator at [email protected] or 217-416-4935 to be counted. The time to donate is today, we will be ending our Capital Campaign in mid 2016 and your support is needed urgently.
Thank you!

Faculty Spotlight
MEET ANTHONY BAXTON
This summer, several painting and drawing classes will be taught by Anthony Baxton, our enthusiastic and passionate instructor here at the SAA. He began teaching these types of classes in 2013, but being hired as a painting instructor was not his first experience at the Art Association. Anthony, a Springfield native, was raised in the Enos Park Neighborhood and can recall playing around the buffalo sculpture, to him the “mirrored bison,” and attending many SAA events. Over the years, he began to realize that art was a true passion, and he began to teach himself to paint and draw, and was given the chance to begin teaching at a University of Kentucky Open House in 2004.
Some of Anthony's greatest influences date back to when he was a child and tried to copy much of Andrew Loomis's work, which he felt told a story. William Bouguereau was another great influence, who he says is his all-time favorite. Both of these artists influenced his love and talent for oil portraits, something he is best known for in the Springfield area. Anthony believes that "painting is a skill that can be learned and developed" and teaches the importance of trial and error in the learning process. When asked why he continues to teach, he said, "It is a great privilege to give students a method of communication and to allow them to express themselves more fluidly." Anthony credits Richard Schmid for his teaching method and for giving him knowledge on how to live as an artist. The SAA must give credit to Richard as well, because we are lucky to have such a talented instructor. Keep an eye out for classes taught by Anthony during our fall session for a chance to learn pastels, oil, or acrylic painting.

CATHOLIC HEART VOLUNTEERS CLEANUP WEEK SAA wants to send a big THANK YOU to Catholic Heart Mission Crew and specifically our Group 27! For one week, we
were lucky enough to host these six high school students and their leader from Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, and
Michigan. They were part of a larger mission trip with over 300 students that stayed at Southeast High School. The
groups were cleaning up individual’s homes, non-profit organizations, including our own dear SAA grounds. They
helped organize closets, assist with Summer Art Camp, and the dirtiest of all, clean out the upstairs studio space of
the Ceramics Lab. They were an incredible bunch and we can’t thank them enough for all their hard work. Hope you
can come back and see us, Phil, Mackenzie, Katie, Stella, Skylar, Lauren and Christine. Group 27 would like to thank
Sister Mary Fran and Sister Anita for hosting our crew at Jubilee Farm on their last day in Springfield.

M.G. NELSON FAMILY GALLERY
ALLONS-Y July 3rd through 31
Opening Reception on Friday July 10 5:30 to 7:30 pm
(French) a.lo~.zee` “Let’s go!” “Come with me, follow me”
Allons-y is a phrase often used by the tenth doctor in Doctor Who.
Coming from different backgrounds, the friendship that has evolved
between Rob Boryk and CJ Niehaus has been based on a common
passion for clay and an affection for the BBC show, Doctor Who. While
students at SIU Carbondale, the two ceramists found a kinship in
discussing their favorite artistic medium while arguing the time shifts of
their favorite television traveler.
So, in naming their shared show at Springfield Art Association, “Allons-
y”, both artists make reference to time shifts and the point in their lives
where they are experimenting and moving forward into emerging
careers. Their wish is for the viewer to come along with them on their
journey and jump into the moving stream of creativity.
DEMO PROJECT IN THE NELSON GALLERY
In Reference to Another August 7th to 28th
Opening Reception Friday, August 14, 5:30 to 8:30
In Reference to Another is an exhibition that spans two locations on the Springfield Art
Association campus: DEMO Project, an alternative exhibition space dedicated to
contemporary projects, and the M.G. Nelson Family Gallery, the premier community arts
venue of the capital city. Contemporary artists Cody Arnall, Edward Kelley, and Megan
Stroech utilize materials, space, and imagery to create structures and compositions that rely
on reference, be it personal or cultural, to guide their audience.
Cody Arnall, who is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Paducah School of Art and Design
in Kentucky, will exhibit large-scale installations that are initially born from self-referential
experience and grow to broader cultural and experiential references that are accessible to his
audience.
Edward Kelley, Sculpture Studio Technician and 3D Design Instructor at Drake University in Iowa, will exhibit sculptural works that
reference history, factual and fabricated. His work for DEMO Project will offer a site-responsive, self-guided interactive tour reliant
upon cast historical markers, maps, audio, and pseudo-governmental parking signage that direct the audience. Sculptural works
intended for the SAA gallery will offer large-scale works that, through material and imagery, are referential to art history and
systems (cultural and mechanical.)
Meagan Stroech, Printmaking Shop Technician at Columbia College and Teaching Artist at Spudnik Press in Chicago, will bring both
digital collages and three-dimensional material collages. These abstracted works are open and vaguely referential, offering the
viewer the opportunity to create associations unique to them from these references.
I am a history and art history student at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, and I spent the last semester studying abroad in London. While there, I wrote a paper that I will turn into my honors senior thesis next spring, and the Michael Victor II Library at the Springfield Art Association has been an invaluable source throughout this project. The process began last fall, when I began researching potential topics. I visited the library when I was home for break to look at books on British architecture and London and ended up finding a book called London: World City 1800-1840. The book is a companion to an exhibition that was held from June to November 1992 in Essen, Germany and contains essays written by different authors. Most of the essays discuss the arts in the city in some way, such as painting, applied art, and drama, and are accompanied by images that relate to their topics. However, the primary focus of the book is the idea of London as a modern metropolis with a newfound global importance in this time. This idea is crucial to my thesis and made the book one of my most important sources. I researched the ways in which architect John Nash’s contributions to London (primarily the very fashionable Regent Street and Regent’s Park) expressed the city’s new identity as a modern, sophisticated, and powerful metropolis in the early nineteenth century. I checked the book out and brought it to New York in the fall, and then made copies of the relevant chapters to bring to England with me. I used several of the book’s essays, along with archival research and other secondary sources, to help me understand and explain these ideas in my paper, which I finished in April. Studying abroad while writing my thesis was an incredible experience and the SAA’s library was a great source throughout the process.
I also used library books for another project while I was in the United Kingdom. As an Alumni Memorial Scholar at Colgate, I am eligible to receive grant funding to do a research project during my time in college. I wanted to study both historic preservation and architectural history, so I designed a project where I could explore British castles and how they are presented to the public today. I used books on castles from the library to develop this idea and also to begin selecting the sites I would study. I visited nine different castles in England, Scotland, and Wales in May and analyzed the way that each site shares its history with those who visit it. I will present my findings in a blog post and a presentation in the fall. The books and resources of the Michael Victor II Library have definitely enhanced my education and work despite being a continent away!

The Jewel Ball 84th Beaux Arts Ball Royal Court Reception
On June 14th, King Alexander Kane and Queen Christy Rolf
welcome their friends, family, and SAA membership to meet
them and the other Royal Court members in Edwards Place.
The reception also allowed the Royal Court to view their
fashions for The Jewel Ball, which will be held November 28th
at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
King Alexander is the son of Drs. Greg Kane and Sandy Yeh-
Kane; Queen Christy is the daughter of David and Alice Rolf.
The event honors those, like the Kanes and Rolfs, who have
volunteered their time and talents to the organization for many
years. These families, as well as the chairs of the Ball, invite
you to participate and attend this fun, family tradition to
further the mission of the Springfield Art Association.
ATTENTION SAA MEMBERS: The Board of Directors recently approved a policy change that impacts your volunteer service hours submissions. Effective December 1, 2015 you may only submit volunteer service hours for the previous two years of service.
If you have been a longtime volunteer and have not submitted a tally and description of your volunteer service to the SAA, you have until December first to go back as many years as you can document. After December first we will only take submissions from the past two years.
You may print a service hour form from our website www.springfieldart.org. You can either e-mail the form to Betsy or postal mail it to the SAA. If you have any questions you may contact Betsy at the SAA.
