PETER PAN MOAT BRAE TRUSTNEWSLETTER

“It’s bringing the magic back to Dumfries.” Visitor’s comment at Moat Brae Open Day

Your gift can be as big as the crocodile, or as tiny as Tinker Bell, but please give what you can.

Joanna Lumley, Patron

“… when the shades of night began to fall, certain young mathematicians shed their triangles, crept up walls and down trees, and became pirates in a sort of Odyssey that was long afterwards to become the play of Peter Pan. For our escapades in a certain Dumfries Garden, which is enchanted land to me, were certainly the genesis of that nefarious work”. JM Barrie

Our dream of creating a National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling and Neverland Discovery Garden at Moat Brae, is beginning to become a reality.

The vision is an exciting one for Moat Brae - where Peter Pan began - to be a place that celebrates imagination, creativity and play. It will be somewhere for everyone to enjoy, recognising its literary, cultural and historical heritage as the Birthplace of Peter Pan.

This summer will see a giant leap forward with our patron Joanna Lumley helping us launch a Digital Appeal for the last £1.5 million needed to transform Moat Brae. This will allow us to enrich the lives of thousands of children from all over Scotland and the world.

Our fundraising has been very successful.

To date £4 million has already been secured out of the £5.5 million necessary to start the Phase B works on this magical, but derelict, Georgian townhouse.

We are appealing for your help in reaching our target – see page 2 for ten ways you can join our Big Adventure.

If you choose to make a donation then your gift will help us to create a Neverland Discovery Garden, allowing young people to have their own make-believe adventures in the very place where J.M. Barrie first dreamed of Neverland.

It will also help us build an education pavilion, shop and café as well as the fittingout, interpretation and design of the new Centre.

At the same time as the capital works are taking place, we will continue to develop long term strategic partnerships and start to plan the various events and activity programmes for when the National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling opens.

Some restoration has already taken place and we are thrilled by the positive reactions of so many people who are actively engaging and connecting with us - online, by visiting the house, supporting us at our events or fundraising for us.

Once the work is complete, Moat Brae House will also be a catalyst for the regeneration of Dumfries Town Centre.

Every day more people are getting inspired by the great sense of possibility, heritage and excitement that Moat Brae offers – imaginations are taking flight just as they did in J.M. Barrie’s ‘happiest days’ as a child in Dumfries.

We are also redesigning our website, to make it more colourful and fun, and to keep people right up to date with all that’s going on.

Children’s Literature Symposium

Scottish Youth Theatre Revives JM Barrie’s First Play

Join us to hear the first reading of Bandelero the Bandit since it was written and performed by seventeen year old author J.M. Barrie in Dumfries in 1877. This special event begins a three-year collaboration between Scottish Youth Theatre and PPMBT to bring Barrie’s first play, written when he was a pupil at Dumfries Academy, to the stage as a source of inspiration for new, young writers and performers.

The culmination of the project will be a fully staged production of Bandelero alongside new work written and performed by young people from Dumfries & Galloway. It is hoped this will

be presented around the time Moat Brae opens as a National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling in 2017.

The first rehearsed reading will be presented alongside the Nursery chapters from Peter Pan, by Scottish Youth Theatre at Dumfries Academy on Friday 26th June at 7.30pm.

Tickets £12 (school children and students £5) Midsteeple Box Office 01387 253 383 and at www.peterpanmoatbrae.org

Adventurous New Children’s Book

We are so excited about Sixteen String Jack and the Garden of Adventure, by Tom Pow, illustrated by Ian Andrew, which

was launched by publishers Birlinn Ltd at Moat Brae on 26th May.

This stunning and quite remarkable new children’s book searches out the magic that, in time, would produce one of the

most famous characters in children’s literature. The story is set in the garden at Moat Brae, ‘Where Peter Pan Began’ – it is the first book to be inspired by the house and gardens since Peter Pan itself! A huge crocodile of queuing people formed as books were signed at the launch and copies have been flying off the shelves ever since. They make great presents and are the perfect way to tell children of the connection between Moat Brae and Peter Pan.

On sale now at most book shops £9.99 and at Midsteeple Box Office, Dumfries (on behalf of PPMBT). www.birlinn.co.ukISBN 978-1-78027-226-9

The Solway Centre at Glasgow University’s Crichton Campus will be hosting a two-day programme of discussion & performance in Dumfries, with the University of Edinburgh & Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust. Entitled: Scottish Children’s Literature: Forgotten Histories, New Perspectives & J.M. Barrie, it will include a chance for delegates to tour Moat Brae and hear the reading of Barrie’s first play Bandelero the Bandit at Dumfries Academy.

JM Barrie’s Peter Pan the Graphic Novel by Stref colouring by Fin Cramb

The stories of the boy who wouldn’t grow up and his creator J.M. Barrie continue to inspire new generations of artists across the globe, here is a brief round-up of just a few of the exciting interpretations we have been following:

“If you can’t teach me to fly, teach me to sing”

Finding Neverland The Musical - the story of ‘How Peter Became Pan’. Starring Matthew Morrison and Kelsey Grammer, this production has been taking Broadway by storm since opening at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre NY in April.

Finding Neverland The Album - This new album brings together some of today’s biggest artists to reimagine music written by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy from the Broadway musical. It features an astonishing line up of singers including Nick Jones, Ellie Goulding, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, John Legen, Keisza and Jon Bon Jovi. (Republic Records release June 2015)

Welsh National Opera is touring a new opera version of Peter Pan by composer Richard Ayres and librettist Lavinia

Greenlaw. Performances in Cardiff and Birmingham preceeded two at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (24th & 25th July).

Regents Park Open Air Theatre’s magical production of Peter Pan this summer played to great acclaim.

ITv has commissioned a new, two-hour drama version of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan with international pop star, singer/songwriter and actress Paloma Faith making a guest appearance as Tinker Bell. Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci (Devil Wears Prada) plays Captain Hook and Laura Fraser (Breaking Bad) is Mrs Darling. Watch out for this later in the year.

Pan The Movie will be released by Warner Bros in October. This prequel tells the story of how Peter himself discovered Neverland. Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement) and starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard.

Oscar-Winner Reese Witherspoon will star in Disney’s new live-action Tinker Bell the Movie, which she will also produce.

2015 - A Good Year for Peter Pan

Published this summer Stevie White’s J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan brings the world of Neverland to life as a graphic novel for the very first time. This stunning book tells the familiar story of The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up as never before. Panel by panel, the wonderfully vibrant illustrations and engaging text will transport you to the landscapes of Neverland - landscapes based on the locations that first inspired Barrie to write his tale, including Moat Brae House in Dumfries and the garden where he played as a boy.

This is a graphic novel to inspire awe in reluctant and confident young readers alike.

There are forty-five versions of the story of the Boy Who Never Grew Up, telling the adventures of Peter, Wendy, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell and the Crocodile in many different languages, across time and with beautiful illustrations. It is so interesting to see how one story can be retold in many different ways.

Children at Heathhall Primary who raised £40 for PPMBT with a sponsored ‘Creatures of Neverland’ event for which

they made book marks, shadow art, Peter Pan hats and treasure maps. We invited

them to visit Moat Brae in December and they wrote some wonderful stories about their trip… “Peter Pan’s shadow left him and had an adventure in Wendy’s house. We imagined our shadows sneaked off when we were sleeping and had an adventure. Come read all about it…”. You can read more of what they wrote on our website.

Beverley MatthiasBeverley, who died in 2012, was a children’s story teller, writer, lecturer and specialist in teaching children with reading disabilities. She kindly bequeathed her large collection of children’s books, story-telling props and framed illustrations to the Trust. They will be housed in the story room on the chamber floor of Moat Brae for children to read and be read to from.

As well as donating these items to Moat Brae, Beverley donated her body to Dundee University for the teaching of anatomy and the furtherance of education.
