Dear Friends,

We have had another exciting, successful year on the banks of Caney Creek. We are now busying ourselves preparing campus for the arrival of our students for the upcoming semester. We had a record number of applicants for the fall 2014 class and plan to have an outstanding semester.

Over the course of the summer, we were able to renovate the first floor of the Davis Student Center, as well as accomplish many other smaller projects around campus. The Davis Student Center renovation included new furnishings and paint for the restrooms, new flooring and paint, as well as a new ceiling for the atrium in the ‘Hunger Din.’ One of our biggest undertakings for the next academic year will be the construction of our new Center for Servant Leadership, which will house our work study and community outreach programs.

This issue of Pippa’s Song showcases our most recent graduates. In May, we had the honor of awarding degrees to 97 ALC graduates and ten graduates of The June Buchanan School. Upon completion of their degrees, our students are prepared to live a life of service to others. Many of our ALC graduates return to our service area to lead and serve. A detailed list of our graduates can be found on page 5 and page 8. One of our 2014 graduates, Ariel Nickell, has had a prolific basketball career while at Alice Lloyd College. Adele Williams, student journalist, was able to conduct an interview with Ariel which you can read on page 4.

Also, in this issue you will receive an update about recent alumni activities, faculty and staff accomplishments, as well as upcoming campus events. In fact, on the adjoining page you’ll read about one of our many outstanding professors, Dr. Rhonda Smith-Daughtery, and her latest accomplishment. One of our most notable events is quickly approaching! Appalachia Day Homecoming will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Mark your calendar so that you can join in on the fellowship and fun!

As always, we are grateful to you for keeping the mission of Alice Lloyd College alive. Without devoted alumni and friends we could not continue to provide a quality, character-based education to the youth of Appalachia.

ALC NewsALC History Professor Presents Paper in England

The talents of Alice Lloyd College’s professors are not limited to the mountains of Kentucky, but are showcased internationally. Dr. Rhonda Smith-Daugherty, Associate Professor of History, spent April 14-17, 2014, at an international conference in Sandhurst, England, presenting her paper based on the life of famous aviator Jacqueline Cochran.

The conference,“1944: Seventy Years On,” was focused on World War II and involved scholars from all over the world, including the United States, Great Britain, France, Holland, Russia, Germany, Japan, Poland, and many other nations. The conference was sponsored by Global War Studies: The Journal for the Study of Warfare and Weapons, 1919-1945 and the Royal Military Academy, the British equivalent to West Point.

“Being invited to Sandhurst was a great honor,” says Smith-Daugherty. Her paper, “Wings for Victory: Jacqueline Cochran, American Women Pilots and the RAF,” told the story of female aviator Jacqueline Cochran, who became the first woman pilot to fly across the ocean after delivering a bomber to England in the summer of 1941. In 1942, Cochran also led twenty-five female pilots to England where they delivered fighters and bombers for the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), a support group for the Royal Air Force (RAF).

Smith-Daugherty has spent many hours researching the life of Jacqueline Cochran, beginning with Cochran as the topic of her doctoral dissertation in 1999. The professor also published a biography of Cochran in 2012 titled Jacqueline Cochran: Biography of a Pioneer Aviator. Her research has taken her all across the United States, including the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas, where Cochran’s papers are located, and the site of the Cochran Collection at the National Air and Space Station in Washington, D.C.

Smith-Daugherty’s plans for the future include the publishing of a book on counterinsurgency in 2015 of which she is a collaborating author.

ALC Anglers Make a Huge SplashThe Alice Lloyd College fishing team, the ALC Anglers, caught a lot of attention this year. The club has been in existence since 2010, but only recently started making waves in collegiate fishing tournaments. Michael Watts and Caleb Baker, both from Letcher County, Kentucky, have beaten the odds by landing Alice Lloyd College in the top 35 schools in the country in collegiate fishing.

The team had a strong start to the season, finishing in second place in the 2014 Moonpie Open at Lake Chickamauga near Dayton, Tennessee. The ALC Anglers competed in their first nationally-televised competition on Kentucky Lake shortly after their excellent placement at the Moonpie Open. They went into the competition with hopes of placing among the top ten. Unfortunately, they missed a top-ten finish by a mere 4 ounces.

Although the team fell short in weight, they were able to garner the attention of the collegiate fishing community. The impressive duo landed the College among the top 100 schools in the country for collegiate fishing. In fact, they were ranked as high as 34th and finished the season ranked 52nd among all collegiate fishing teams. Alice Lloyd College was one of the smallest schools, if not the smallest, in the history of college fishing to rank in the top 100. It is an accomplishment that Michael and Caleb will remember for years to come.

Michael graduated from Alice Lloyd College in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology. Caleb will return next semester and will have another opportunity to make ALC fishing history. The duo said that their success would not have been possible without the support of their sponsors and donors who helped them reach their goal of placing ALC on the collegiate fishing map.

ALC NewsALC Mourns the Loss of Longtime Employee and Friend

Longtime ALC Registrar Thelmarie Madden Thornsberry passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, after a long, courageous battle with breast cancer. She worked for the College for 53 years, 50 of those years being served as the campus registrar.

Thelmarie was survived by her husband Cloys; three children: Susie (John) Meehan, P.R. (Lisa) Thornsberry, and Sherry (Jeffrey) Morgan; seven grandchildren: Whitney (Robert) Amburgey, Jared (Zoe) Meehan, Jordan Morgan, Jade Morgan, Ashlee Thornsberry, Jonathan Morgan, and Tanner Thornsberry; and one great-grandchild-to-be Camren Amburgey.

Thel was an amazing woman who truly exemplified the traits and characteristics set forth by our founder, Alice Lloyd. She was not only our registrar, but our historian, counselor, and friend. She and her husband, Cloys, made every effort to attend on-campus events, especially basketball games, and to help out any student in need. The friendship and love that she shared will be greatly missed.

In recognition of her exemplary example of servant leadership and outstanding commitment to the region surrounding Alice Lloyd College, in 2007, Thelmarie was chosen for our highest alumni award, Alumna of the Year. Additionally, in 2006-2007, she received the Alice Lloyd College Leadership in Service Award, as voted on by her peers, an honor bestowed on only one employee per year.

When asked about Thel’s impact on the College, Executive Vice President Jim Stepp had this to say, “As registrar, she was charged with upholding the academic integrity of this institution, and she was involved with every diploma that went out, every transcript that went out, for students here since 1961. Cloys and Thel believed so much in the mission of the institution. They believed so much in these students. She was an invaluable asset to the College and will be missed by all.”

ALC NewsALC Recognizes 2014 Ella M. Geddes Servant Leadership Award Winners

Alice Lloyd College announced the winners of the Ella M. Geddes Servant Leadership Award during the 2014 Honors Day Awards Ceremony. This award was established to honor junior students for their contribution of service and leadership to Alice Lloyd College and the local community. The recipients were chosen by their peers and faculty as servant leaders in the areas of ministry and community service. The Servant Leadership Program serves as an effective instrument to the entire educational community by promoting the ideals of service that substantially benefit others.

The presidents of The Barney II Foundation and The Benevolent Friends of African Charities Foundation (The Moore Foundation) are collaborating to provide funding for the Program. The foundations hold Christian core values as important elements of their funding philosophy. Two $1,000 awards were granted this year. Each recipient received $500 to be applied toward the cost of tuition, $250 for their personal use, and $250 to be donated to a charity of their choice. In addition, the recipients received a bronze sculpture of a “divine servant” and were honored at the annual ALC Board of Trustees’ meeting on April 25, 2014.

H. and Thelma Bates, of Whitesburg, Kentucky, and Katie McFarland, daughter of Richard and Amy McFarland, of Church Hill, Tennessee. 2014 Sullivan Award RecipientsEach year, Alice Lloyd College has the honor of awarding one male and one female senior with awards made possible by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation. This foundation has been a supporter of the College since 1971 and has provided scholarship assistance for many of our alumni through the years.

The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, now located in Oxford, Mississippi, was chartered in New York in 1934. Its purpose is to promote service to others and service to the broader community—values exemplified by Algernon and Mary Mildred Sullivan, the parents of the organization’s founder.

In addition to providing financial support to small private colleges located primarily in the Appalachian region, the Sullivan Foundation also collaborates with 53 southeastern colleges and

universities in presenting awards in memory of Algernon and Mary Mildred Sullivan. The two awards at Alice Lloyd College are a testament to the character of the recipients; these students are considered to be the ambassadors of the College, and their character and service to others are seen as a direct reflection of the values of the College.

This year’s Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award was presented to Ryan Spicer, a Pre-Med Biology major from Campton, Kentucky. Ryan received his diploma on May 3, 2014. He plans to attend medical school in the near future. Ryan was on the Academic Dean’s List every semester of attendance at ALC. The Mary Mildred Sullivan Award was given to Jennifer Hall, a Biology major from Raven, Kentucky. Jennifer also graduated on May 3, 2014. She plans to enter the nursing or physical therapy field in the imminent future. During her senior year, she was also presented with the Student Worker of the Year Award for the Marketing and Communications Department. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan and Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards were presented by Priscilla Fraley, Director of Foundation and Corporate Giving, during the annual Alice Lloyd College Honors Day Ceremony.

ALC NewsSenior Spotlight: Ariel Nickell

Alice Lloyd College marketing student Adele Williams had the opportunity to speak with ALC alum Ariel Nickell, who has just recently graduated from Alice Lloyd College with a Bachelor of Arts in Sports and Fitness Management. She has been praised for her outstanding basketball talents, but it’s her leadership both on and off the court that makes her a star. In her final season with ALC’s Lady Eagles, Nickell became the leading scorer and broke the all-time rebounding record, too. Her basketball statistics are extraordinary which made her KIAC Player of the Year and Athlete of the Year awards no surprise. What we learned through the interview is that this Lady Eagle is modest, respectful, and always ready to face the future head on.

Student newswriter Adele Williams caught up with the basketball legend for a fun, in-depth chat.

ADELE WILLIAMS (ALC): Let’s get some of the basics out of the way, shall we? What’s your hometown? Also, what made you decide to attend ALC? We hate to see you go, but are so excited about what you’ll accomplish in your future.

ARIEL NICKELL: I’m from Tazewell, Tennessee. My brother studied here. I really look up to him and his basketball talents. When Coach John Mills contacted me to play ball, I knew it was the place for me. As for the future, well, I really love sports, so I would love to do something of that nature, maybe athletic director or something. My love for sports is undying. I’m still trying to figure out what the future might hold for me.

ALC: What has been your favorite or most memorable game that you played as an ALC Lady Eagle?

ARIEL NICKELL: I’ve enjoyed every game and each holds its own memory, but if I had to choose, it would probably be our game against UPike during my third year. It was an intense game that went into overtime, and we ended up winning by one point. We displayed great teamwork during that game.

(The final score was 88-87. Nickell had 39 points in the win.)

ALC: You have done some absolutely amazing things in your college basketball career. What do you have to say about all of the accomplishments you’ve made? In particular, holding the record for the most points made in the College’s history and being named KIAC Player of the Year?

ARIEL NICKELL: I didn’t accomplish those things by myself. Most of the credit should go to the rest of the team. They have made it much more memorable for me, and I would have never made it this far without their support on and off the court. As for having the record for the most points, it’s definitely an honor. I didn’t come in hoping to break any records. It’s just fun to play, and that’s just a bonus.

ALC: Who has been the most instrumental in supporting you and your basketball career?

ARIEL NICKELL: There are so many people that have been behind me, but if I had to list a few it would be my mom, Coach Mills, my uncle Keith, and my grandparents.

ALC: You just finished competing in the 2014 European Metropolis Tour, representing not only Alice Lloyd College, but also the country. What did you take away from this experience? Did you learn anything about the different cultures or about basketball?

ARIEL NICKELL: I learned quite a bit about the culture. It was humbling to see so many different lifestyles and the standard of living across Europe. The game of basketball was a little bit different, too. Some of the rules changed but it was the same concept. It was an interesting obstacle to overcome while I was playing.

ALC: How was it playing basketball against the best of the best and star athletes from other countries? How did your team fair?

ARIEL NICKELL: Well, we travelled to different areas and played their top teams. My team played four different teams across Europe, and with good team work and dedication, we won all four games. The hardest game was the third one. It was physically competitive. There was so much skill on both teams. It was awesome to be playing against and with such outstanding talent.

ALC: What would you tell student-athletes who are considering continuing their athletic career in college but aren’t sure?

ARIEL NICKELL: You need to at least give it a shot. You don’t want to regret not playing in your future. You have nothing to lose. I am so glad that Coach Mills and my mom talked me into playing collegiate basketball. I have loved it. There’s really nothing like it.

On Saturday, May 3rd, family and friends gathered at the Grady Nutt Athletic Center to watch this year’s graduates receive their degrees from Alice Lloyd College.

In his opening remarks, President Joe Stepp welcomed family and friends to the campus and praised the graduates for their outstanding accomplishments. The Class of 2014 was blessed with a moving baccalaureate address from Reverend Glenn Noe of Red Fox, Kentucky, who, with his wife, has served the mountain people for over 30 years. The commencement address was delivered by Dr. Anthony Yonts of Hazard, Kentucky. Dr. Yonts is an alumnus of The June Buchanan School and Alice Lloyd College. He went on to receive his D.O. degree from Pikeville College (now the University of Pikeville), and is dual board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He co-founded Quantum Health Care in Hazard, Kentucky, and has been there since the end of his residency at the University of Kentucky.

Following the presentation of the graduates and the awarding of degrees, special recognition was given to three graduates. Dr. Claude “Lafie” Crum, Academic Dean of the College, presented the salutatorian award to Han Gia Ly. The prestigious valedictorian award was given to two students Kamilah Mustapha and Cole Cornett.

In addition to recognizing our graduates, President Stepp also presented two special awards to faculty and staff members. Sherry Long, Assistant Professor of Education, was given the Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award, and Gary Watts, Print Shop Supervisor, received the Leadership in Service Award.

All grade levels of The June Buchanan School Academic Team have had another outstanding season. Competitions for elementary, middle grade, and high school students have resulted in a plethora of awards for JBS. The following summarizes this year’s achievements at each individual level.

Alumni News

Alice Lloyd College’s Spring Alumni Banquet was held at Jenny Wiley State Park in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, on April 11, 2014. While it may have been a stormy spring evening, that was simply not enough to keep 87 guests from partaking in the activities!

Those in attendance were treated to an acoustic performance by ALC’s Voices of Appalachia and a delicious buffet-style dinner catered by Jenny Wiley State Park. Alicia Dawson, President of the Floyd County Alumni Chapter, welcomed everyone and presided over the event. ALC President Joe Stepp informed the group of campus happenings and projects for the upcoming year, such as the demolition of the Brown & Green building this summer and the construction of the new Center for Servant Leadership in its place.

We are so appreciative of those who joined us, and we hope to see even more of our Floyd, Johnson, and Pike County alumni next year!

Alice Lloyd College alumni are always willing to support our current ALC students, and two very special alumni sponsored awards were given out at the 2014 Honor’s Day Program. The first of these awards was established by the Class of 1982, the first four-year graduates of Alice Lloyd College. Since the majority of the Class of 1982 became educators, this award is given to an education major that will be doing his or her student teaching during the upcoming school year. Kimberly Jones (Alumni Association President) of Lackey, Kentucky, presented the award to Whitney Shell of Manchester, Kentucky.

The second award given was the Alumni Association’s Campus Spirit Award, given to a student from the junior class who has demonstrated service and leadership, a spirit of volunteerism, campus involvement, and enthusiasm for and appreciation of the Alice Lloyd College experience. ALC NewsAlice Lloyd College Holds Annual Service Awards Banquet

On April 25th, Alice Lloyd College held its twenty-third annual Service Awards Banquet in the Dining Hall of the Jerry C. Davis Student Center. Twenty-eight members of the faculty, staff, and trustees were honored with a certificate and a pin signifying the number of years of service each individual has given to the institution. These tokens of appreciation were presented by Robert M. Duncan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Alice Lloyd College.

ALC NewsA Planned Gift That Keeps On Giving

As we grow older, we begin to realize that we need to make plans for the future – not the type of plans a young person makes for a career and a family, but plans for the distribution of our estates. What lasting legacy will your estate create when you are gone? Have you considered a Named Endowed Scholarship at Alice Lloyd College? By leaving a bequest for an endowed scholarship at ALC, your legacy will make sure that future Appalachian students have a bright future.

Many of our students come from low-income families where there just isn’t enough money to pay for a college tuition. College can cost from $18,000 a year on up. Imagine graduating from a 4-year college with a

debt load of $60,000 or more. It is a reality in today’s world.

Alice Lloyd College’s purpose is to provide educated leadership for the Appalachian communities where our students grew up. We encourage students to go back to their communities and become leaders who are trained with skills that can help others and uplift the entire region. Approximately 83% of ALC graduates do return home to serve. Debt is the last thing they need when they come back into an area with a struggling economy.

Students who come to ALC from our service area in Central Appalachia pay absolutely nothing out-of-pocket for tuition – their tuition is covered by friends like YOU so that debt can be avoided. It is critical that we continue to offer these opportunities so that Appalachia can grow a strong economy. A will bequest of $10,000 or more to ALC, designated to establish an Endowed Scholarship in YOUR NAME or that of a LOVED ONE, will create a permanent scholarship that will be awarded annually to one or more deserving students for years to come.

ALC’s Christmas Pretties Program Needs Your HelpThe Christmas Pretties Program, which was started by Alice Lloyd’s mother, Ella Geddes, has been a tradition since the early 1900s. After coming to the area, Ms. Geddes found that many families were too poor to celebrate Christmas with gifts and presents. She wrote to her friends in Boston and had them send gifts to her for those in need.

Today, the Christmas Pretties Program continues under the leadership of Jackie Sparkman, Coordinator of Community Programs. Each year ALC students begin wrapping gifts in mid-October and about 3,500 gifts are given out during the holiday season. Gifts are given to students in participating churches, head start programs, and elementary schools in Knott, Floyd, and Letcher counties.

This would not be possible without the generous help of donors, and we are asking for your help this Christmas season. Items that we need include crayons, coloring books, stuffed animals, dolls, trucks, jump ropes, action figures, and wrapping paper. Since these are given as gifts, the items donated must be new. All donations are greatly appreciated and will be wrapped and sent to a local child in need. We are also grateful for monetary donations sent towards purchasing these items. We treasure each contribution made and want to send a sincere word of thanks to all donors in advance.

In Remembrance

Reverend Jerry Griffith (Class of 1938) of McArthur, Ohio, passed away February 16, 2014. After graduating from ALC, Jerry pursued degrees at the University of Kentucky and the Ohio University School of Banking. He is retired from Vinton National Bank and was a founding member of the McArthur Freewill Baptist Church, where he also served as pastor. Jerry is survived by one brother: Edward Griffith; one daughter: Brenda (Jim) Henderson; and six grandchildren.

Celeste Patrick Mullins (Class of 1968 & Class of 1985) of Amburgey, Kentucky, passed away March 29, 2014. Celeste was a retired Air Quality Inspector. Survivors include her husband: Jimmy; one son: Patrick Bryant; one sister: Earlene Doster; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Inez Reedy Owens (Class of 1955) of Bevinsville, Kentucky, passed away May 29, 2014. A highly respected educator, Inez served for many years as a teacher in the Floyd County school system. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus. Inez is survived by one son: Marcus (Caroline) Owens, Jr.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Virgil Ramsey (Class of 1933) of Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away November 13, 2013. After graduating from Caney Junior College, Virgil taught eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse. He was later employed at Curtis Wright during WWII and later worked for Harbison Walker. He retired from the Goodyear Atomic Plant after 27 years of service. Virgil was an active member of his community, and, together, he and his wife co-authored “The Hanging Rock Iron Region,” which can be found in many Southern Ohio libraries. Virgil is survived by his daughters: Sue (Jack) Jones and Kathy Cooper; and one son: Bryan (Marlene) Ramsey.

Howard Ritchie (Class of 1956) of Littleton, Colorado, passed away April 23, 2014. Howard left his home near Hazard, Kentucky, shortly after completing his studies at ALC to attend the University of Wyoming, where he earned a Masters in Electrical Engineering. He served his country for 23 years in the United States Air Force and later had successful careers with Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Howard is survived by Bette, his wife of 58 years: two daughters: Gena (Lee) and Lori (Michael); two sons: Robert (Phyllis) and Michael (Ronette); four grandchildren; and three sisters.

Michael A. “Chico” Rodriguez (Class of 1988) of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, passed away on February 25, 2014. Michael was the Director for the Small Business Development Center at Eastern Kentucky University and had been very active in the Richmond, Kentucky, community. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Rodriguez, and his son, Timothy Michael Rodriguez.

Carol Stumbo of McDowell, Kentucky, passed away on July 8, 2014. Carol taught at Alice Lloyd College from 1968 until 1975. Carol was the recipient of the Ashland Oil Teacher Achievement Award and the Floyd Countian of the Year Award. She was the President of the Floyd County Education Association and was creator and publisher of the Mantrip, a journal of Floyd County literature and history. Carol is survived by one brother: Clark Stumbo; two sisters: Christine Stumbo and Margie Kelley; five nieces and nephews; and eleven great-nieces and -nephews.

Thelmarie Thornsberry (Class of 1958) of Amburgey, Kentucky, passed away June 16, 2014. Thelmarie served Alice Lloyd College for 53 years, most of that time as the school’s beloved and devoted Registrar. Thelmarie is survived by her husband, Cloys; her children: Susie (John) Meehan, P.R. (Lisa) Thornsberry and Sherry (Jeffrey) Morgan. Also surviving are seven grandchildren with one great-grandchild on the way; one brother: Charles Billy Madden; one sister: Pat Amburgey; and a host of other relatives and friends. Charles Tignor (Class of 1933) of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, passed away on April 8, 2014. Charles attended Caney Junior College and went on to earn degrees from Tusculum College and the University of Kentucky School of Law. Charles’ prolific employment history includes a private law practice, service as a Special Agent of the FBI, and Director of the Narcotic Enforcement Division and the Intelligence Division for the state of Arizona. He later worked for the publisher of the Daily News Digest until his retirement in 1990. Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Ramah. He is survived by one daughter: Susan (Bob) Dahl; one brother: Troy Tignor; two grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Dr. Daniel J. Tutolo, age 79, of Bowling Green, Ohio, passed away on March 26, 2014. Dr. Tutolo was Bowling Green State University Professor Emeritus, and enjoyed a long and distinguished career of teaching, research, and community service. He once visited the Alice Lloyd College campus and was so impressed by our unique educational program that, at his passing, his family established the Dr. Daniel Tutolo Endowed Scholarship at Alice Lloyd College in his honor. Dr. Tutolo is survived by his wife, Jo Brandon; three daughters; and four step-children.
