Summer 2013
Vol. 36, No. 3
The 2013 NEWSPA conference lasted only a day. But
I hope you’re still celebrating your publications’ success-es.
We have already sent press releases to all area news-papers, so if you haven’t yet seen the story about your publications’ awards, you should shortly. Inside this newsletter, too, is a listing of all winners, as well as sev-eral of the winning articles, designs and photographs.
But NEWSPA is more than just newspaper and year-book contests. The 2013 conference, held April 17 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, featured many top speakers from northeastern Wisconsin and as far away as Chicago. Keynote speaker Kirsten Strom, client services supervisor for Pandora, told students about her path to Pandora, which took skill, hard work and a little bit of luck to land the job at the company synonymous with in-ternet radio. If you missed her speech, you can listen to the podcast at http://www.uwosh.edu/journalism/news-pa/. Just click on the resources link to find it. You can also watch podcasts of Kevin Rau on “Yearbook Layout and Design,” Amanda Gojdosik on “Blogging about Food and Other Topics” and Sara Steffes Hansen and Brody Karmenzind on “What’s Your Klout and Why it Matters.”
We tried something new this year— asking students and advisers to critique each session by doing a Survey-Monkey survey using their phones and iPods. While the response we received was good, we had few people who took the time to give feedback. For next year, we’ll be back to paper surveys to get more input. Still, here are just some of the comments:§ Shane Nyman, “Writing Reviews” — “Shane was a
great speaker who had some fantastic information to give. It was really interesting to hear him speak. Those who didn’t attend his session really missed out. “
§ Brad Weber, “Using YouTube and Social Media to Market Yourself” —“Funny guy. Good examples.”
§ Nick Penzenstadler, “Get the Dirt” Harnessing Search Functions on the Web to Get the Story” — “It’s al-most creepy what you can find out about people
online when you know where to look.”§ Grace Lim, “It’s about You. Not! The Art of the Artful
Column — “Had good samples of student work.”§ Trent Scott, “Get the Most from Every Interview” —
“Really interactive, helpful information.”§ Amanda Gajdosik, Blogging About Food or Any Oth-
er Topic “ — “Loved her personality and presenta-tion!”
The live Twitter feed worked well again this year to keep students abreast of speakers and sessions. That will return in 2014.
Also back will be Vince Filak, adviser to the Advance-Ti-tan, offering one-on-one critiques with newspaper staffs. As much as schools loved his feedback, they also loved the book he created filled with all sorts of helpful hints.
What was also exciting this year was that some of our speakers were NEWSPA alumni, including Penzenstadler and Gajdosik who came to NEWSPA as high school stu-dents and are now giving back to the organization as speakers. Others were UW-Oshkosh alumni, such as Amelia Compton Wolff, Melanie Cross and Brandon Berg.
If there were a negative to the conference, it would be lower than expected attendance at about 350 students and advisers. I’ll be emailing schools to see why they didn’t come, and if the reason is financial, we’ll look to create some type of scholarship program to help pay for substitute teachers, buses, or whatever need they have. I hope to have more on that in our Fall newsletter.
Can we improve the conference? Of course. That’s why we do the surveys and ask for your feedback. We need — and want —your comments. Good and bad. The board will be meeting in October to begin planning for the 2014 conference. If you have ideas about the conference or contest, email those to me at [email protected].
Yes, it’s a lot of work to put together a conference with 40-plus speakers and nearly 400 students and ad-visers. But when you see the students engaged and stay-ing after to meet with presenters, you know it’s worth it. You know that they are going back to their school, once again excited to work on their high school yearbooks or newspapers. You know that those high school students are the future journalism professionals who will be giving their wisdom at NEWSPA conferences within a few years. And what could be better than that?

CommentsA great shot that has some good feel to it. The facial expression on the kid works well. There’s a bit too much room behind him. It would work better if he were a little less to the left of center (not directlyinthecenter)orifyouhadthebaseintheshotsomehow.Still, itsasolidimageandit’sframed up nicely.

You also need to work on placing the text in an easier-to-read format in terms of spac-ing,leading,columnsandmore.Still,thishaspotential.

CommentsA nice shot of the band folks. I like that I can read “Wautoma” on the one kid’s sleeve. It’s a posed photo,butit’sstillanicesliceofhighschoollife.Cropintighterontheleft-handedgeoftheframeso that the image is a bit more balanced. The rest works.

CommentsThis photo was a great one for a number of reasons. You did a nice job of freezing the moment and giving your readers something fantastic. The composition of the image is great and the moment itself is as well: Youhavewhatappearstobeashotofdesperation, withoneofyourplayerssurroundedbyfouroftheirs. The expression on the face of the shooter is one of that blind desperation while the expression on the de-fender behind her is great as well. Nice job.

The 2013 Skip Zacher Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award was giv-en to former UW Oshkosh professor and NEWSPA founder, Gary Coll, at the annual NEWSPA luncheon.
Coll began what was to become NEWSPA in 1969 when he visited lo-cal high schools with his journalism students to brainstorm ideas for their newspapers and yearbooks.
“When I began what is now NEWS-PA, I had no idea how important it would become to the practice of scho-lastic journalism in this area,” Coll said.
Since then, the program has grown to include high schools from all over the state and hundreds of stu-dents each year.
“Without him there would be no NEWSPA,” NEWSPA executive secre-tary Barbara Benish said. “He had the foresight to realize an organization like this was needed to promote the field of journalism and to educate high school students about its career pos-sibilities.”
Coll began teaching at Oshkosh in 1969 and also served as Oshkosh’s yearbook adviser from 1969-74 and the adviser of the campus newspaper from 1983-89.
He began taking students to lo-cal high schools during his first year of teaching and continued to expand NEWSPA with the help of others.
“I have al-ways greatly ad-mired everyone who came along to contribute and help to ad-vance NEWSPA to become the significant force it has become,” Coll said. “I am espe-cially proud to have been selected as a recipient of the Skip Zacher Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award and have my name inscribed alongside some of those people.”
He became the chair of the Jour-
nalism Department in 1983-89 and retired from teaching in 2005.
“[He had a] great rapport with the students in his classes and while he was chairperson,” former journal-ism secretary Judy Schultz said. “As chairperson of the department, he
was always on top of things and had a good working rela-tionship with fellow faculty members, campus administra-tors and other de-partments on cam-pus.”
Besides teaching, Coll has also published various articles and books.
In 2003 he was awarded Osh-kosh’s Edward M. Penson Distin-guished Teaching Award which is given annually to one to three professors for their excellence in teaching.
Although Coll is retired, he keeps up with the department and his for-mer students.
“Many alumni have kept in touch with Gary over the years, some stop-ping by the office, others calling and visiting at J-department reunions,” Schultz said.
Oshkosh alum Jillane Zellner Fred-ericks recalled how Coll helped her be successful in her career.
“Dr. Gary Coll encouraged me to utilize the journalism skills I learned at UWO and apply them to the sales and marketing field,” Zellner Fredericks said.
Coll remains involved in NEWSPA as a volunteer judge and registration desk worker.
“For more than 40 years, he has dedicated his time and efforts to NEWSPA,” Benish said. “Thousand of students have benefited from that.”
