Chambers of the Honorable Ronald L. Ellis United States District Court, Southern District of New York Summer 2012 Judicial Internship Opportunities The Chambers of the Honorable Ronald L. Ellis, United States Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, seeks second and third-year law students for judicial internship positions. Judge Ellis dedicated most of his legal career to being a civil rights lawyer with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund ("Fund"). From 1976 until his appointment to the bench in 1993, Judge Ellis focused on voting rights, health care, housing, education, environmental justice, and fair employment class action litigation. He served as the Director of the Fund's Fair Employment Program (1984-1990) and Director of its Poverty and Justice Program (1990-1993). The diverse docket includes commercial and civil rights litigation, and habeas corpus cases related to criminal and immigration matters. Interns are entrusted with significant responsibilities in chambers including researching issues of law before the court; drafting findings of facts and conclusions of law; observing court proceedings, including oral arguments and evidentiary hearings in civil cases; and attending pre-trial and settlement conferences, and trials. The internship provides a unique professional opportunity to observe different lawyering styles in court, and to hone legal research and writing skills. The full-time summer internship positions require a commitment of 40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks, and are unpaid. Please send applications by February 1, 2011. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and will be accepted until the positions are filled. Persons of color and candidates interested in public service are especially encouraged to apply. To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcript, and a writing sample to [email protected]. Cover letters may be addressed to Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan and Tanvir Vahora.
