MAKING HEADLINES AROUND THE PROVINCE
Celebrating the Centennial in Pennsylvania!
Planning Committee members join Sr. Phyllis Neves, Provincial Superior, in
cutting the celebratory cake: Nancy Corriere,Patricia Smith, Louise Roberge,
and Nancy Romano – all past pupils!
On July 13, the road toPennsylvania seemed muchshorter as the Salesian Sisters
returned to the Keystone State tocelebrate the Centennial with alumni, friends, and families.
Fr. Joe Corpora, C.S.C., an alumnusof St. Anthony School in Easton, PA,set the tone for the day which wasremembrance and gratitude. In Fr.Joe’s Mass homily, he named each ofhis teachers from kindergarten toeighth grade as he recalled a greateducation and, most of all, theSisters’ loving kindness.
A banquet at the “Eastonian” inEaston followed with reunions of 150teachers and past pupils from Easton,Reading, Roseto, and Philadelphia, aswell as presentations from Churchand civil officials.
What a wonderful day! Thank you, everyone!
The Mayor of Easton, PA, Salvatore J. Panto, Jr., addresses the crowd.Mayor Panto read a proclamation on behalf
of the city of Easton declaring July 13, 2008, to be “Salesian Sisters Day”
in Pennsylvania! Remember when? In 1949, a picnic welcomed Mother Caroline Novasconi, former Provincial
Superior and member of the Salesian General Council, to Easton, PA.

Congratulations, Sisters, on your blessed Jubilees!
Sr. Gerard Barattino70 Years!
“My mother and father emigrated to theUnited States from Italy. I was born inManhattan and attended the public
school in the area. When I was in seventh grade, myfamily moved to the Bronx. My mother and fatherraised 10 children. My Dad had property in Yonkers,so he began to build the homestead there so thatthere would be room for the growing family. Thathouse served as the family headquarters for the next
40 years!
“I became interested in theSalesian Sisters at theMary Help of ChristiansAcademy in NorthHaledon, NJ, where mysister attended highschool, and I took everyopportunity to visit themwhenever I could. I hadplanned to become one of
them as soon as I could getup the courage to tell my Mom and Dad. Meanwhile, some friends invited me to spend Labor Day weekendat Camp Mother Mazzarello, run by the Sisters. Iagreed. God must surely have had a say in this changeof plans. The Sisters captivated me. I took the time tospeak to Mother Antoinette Pollini, and I was hooked. But how could I leave my Mom and Dad?
“On December 8, 1935, I was to enter the convent. Istill did not have the heart to tell my parents. Afterattending Mass with my Mom, I took the train andheaded for North Haledon. I left my older sister thetask of telling my parents. Mom and Dad felt mydeparture keenly. However, they accepted mydecision and loved me just the same.
“I know that Mom and Dad, from their place inheaven today, are enjoying the gatherings of theBarattino clan as much as they did during their daysin Yonkers. I thank God for my family, for mySalesian family, but especially, for my parents whostarted it all.”
Sr. Frances Gumino65 Years!
Frances Gumino was born in the little coal-mining town of Pittston, PA. Her parents werehard working, faith-filled people who loved
each other and their family. After a few years, workwas slow in the coal mines and the family decided torelocate to Paterson, NJ, to be near the grandparents. Here is where Frances met the Salesian Sisters andmade her First Holy Communion.
When Frances was 10, hermother died. Her father, left with four smallchildren, enrolled them atSt. Michael’s School. Butsoon the three girls went tolive with the Sisters, because it became difficultfor father to care for them. When Mr. Gumino died, the children knew they hada home with the Sisters. Sr. Frances remembers, “TheSisters made up for the loss of my parents in theirloving kindness and care. I enjoyed my life. I studied, worked, played, and prayed with the Sisters.”
After much prayer and guidance, Frances wasadmitted into the Formation Program on September12, 1939, after she completed high school. Sheentered the Novitiate program in 1941 and made herfirst profession on August 5, 1943.
With her degree from Seton Hall University, Sr.Frances began her teaching career. With trust andconfidence, following Don Bosco’s system ofeducation, she taught in New York, New Jersey,Pennsylvania, Virginia, Rhode Island, andWisconsin. Everywhere she went, she left the feelingof love and caring that she herself had experienced.
Sr. Frances is now at the Provincial House where shegives a helping hand to our dear elderly Sisterswherever needed. She asks for prayers that she maycontinue caring for God’s people any way she can.

Congratulations, Sisters, on your blessed Jubilees!
Sr. Mildred Zanetti65 Years!
The Zanettis lived in the old Sacred Heart Parish inClifton, NJ. Mildred, the fifth of seven children, wasso named at the suggestion of the midwife. At
Baptism, however, the priest said, “Since there is no St.Mildred, we’ll add the name Angelina.”
Sacred Heart Parish was privileged to have twoSalesian Sisters teaching CCD there. The girls flockedto them, sought their company, and began to hear the
call to religious life. Amongthem, Mary Palatini, IdaOssi, and Rose Oliverientered the convent, andMildred would follow.People never expectedMildred to be a candidatefor the religious life. Shewas athletic and a tomboy! She was probably the firstgirl in town to wearoveralls and slacks. The
pastor commented oneSunday morning, “Mildred, you should always weardresses. Why, you look so pretty in them!”
Then one summer, after she had saved enoughmoney, she joined the “Clifton girls” for a weekendat Camp Mazzarello in North Haledon. What fun!The Salesian atmosphere stayed with her from thatmoment. At a time when some believed that conventlife was for those who were disappointed in love andunhappy with life, Mildred was so in love with lifethat she wanted to dedicate it to serve others as theSalesians Sisters were doing.
Sr. Mildred has served in several capacities fromsecond-grade teacher to financial administrator. Shebecame “Sister Fix-it” in plumbing, carpentry, andlandscaping, and still found time to balance the books.
And it is thanks to Sr. Mildred that studentslearned to drive! As Mary Help of ChristiansAcademy’s driver’s education instructor for manyyears, Sr. Mildred boasts a 100% passing rate!
Sr. Agatha Cosentino50 Years!
“Iwas born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 2,1938, about 30 minutes after midnight, somy Mom always used to say that All the
Saints brought me. My parents, Nicolo and AgathaCosentino, were immigrants who had made the bigsacrifice to leave their homeland of Sicily to look fora better opportunity for their family.
“In 1952, I began high school at Mary Help ofChristians Academy in NorthHaledon, NJ. Sr. TeresaCasaro was MotherSuperior. What a wonder-ful, kind, and caring personshe was! Whenever Sr.Teresa spoke to us, hervoice reminded me of theBlessed Mother. After hertalks, there were alwaysgirls who followed her inorder to talk to her. Oneday I approached her towardthe end of my freshman year and somehow hinted thatperhaps the Lord was calling me to be a Sister.
“The day came for me to enter the convent. MyMom and Dad brought me to North Haledon. Thetime came to say goodbye, and then my Dad brokedown and cried. My Mom was stronger and held itin. This was the only time I ever saw my Dad cry! When the time of postulancy came, I had to convincemy Dad to give me his permission. On August 5,1956, I entered the Novitiate and, two years later, made my first profession of vows.
“For me, religious life has been a time of human, educational, and spiritual growth. Religious life isdefinitely a challenge to live day in and day out. Butwe are NOT alone in the challenge. God, who wantsthis form of Gospel life to continue, is alwayspresent to support us in the ordinary and extraordi-nary challenges! And we have our religiouscommunity, relatives, friends, and benefactors wholove, care for, and support us! And I LOVE IT !!!!!!”

Congratulations, Sisters, on your blessed Jubilees!
Sr. Rosemary Cordes40 Years!
Rosemary Cordes was born in Queens, NY. Shewas the second of eight children. The Cordeshousehold created a loving, understanding,
and peaceful environment for the children. Respectand concern for others were stressed, and there wasalways an air of peaceful “busy-ness.”
Rosemary attended Catholic schools from firstthrough twelfth grades. Her love of the Blessed
Mother was a special part ofher education, a partwhich has been integratedinto her own life. Thislove still shines in herwords and in her eyes asRosemary talks of Mary, her life, her prayers, andher vocation.
When her older brotherjoined the Salesian
Fathers, Rosemary went tovisit him every month and was impressed with thecheerfulness and family spirit of the priests andbrothers. On one of these visits, Rosemary met Sr.Helen Mazurek, who asked her about her futureplans. She invited the Cordes family to visit her inReading, PA. Rosemary prayed and reflected duringthe trip. There, the Sisters warmly welcomed all ofthem, and their kindness was not lost on any memberof the family. Finally, Rosemary decided that theSalesian Sisters was the place where the Lord wantedher to be. She began her religious formation andpreparation in 1964.
Her first profession of vows in 1968 gave Sr. Rosemarythe possibility of continuing her education at SetonHall University. Her teaching assignments in NewJersey, New York, and Florida gave rise to manyexperiences.
Quiet and unassuming, Sr. Rosemary still fulfillsher mission among God’s children with enthusiasmand cheerfulness.
Sr. Maryann Schaefer25 Years!
“Iam a native Californian, born in San Mateo, the second of four children. My elementaryyears were spent in the public school system
until the fifth grade, when I went to St. MartinSchool in Sunnyvale. I graduated from there andattended the Salesian Sisters’ school in Aptos for myfirst two years of high school. During those years, Ilearned what the word ‘Salesian’ meant – to be a‘joyful presence’ among the young.
“In the summer of 1966,my mother became very illand I was asked to returnhome, since I was theoldest girl. I finished highschool and worked at the Sisters’ convent onSaturdays.
“After graduation, I founda job at the FMC Corpora-tion in San José to help myfamily. I was briefly engaged to a good man, but Irealized that there was no man on earth who couldtruly make me happy. At this point, I asked to beginmy religious formation with the Salesian Sisters.
“I entered the convent on August 24, 1978, inHaledon, NJ. In 1983, I made my first religious vows, and professed my perpetual vows on August 5, 1989.
“Over the years I have taught at St. Mary School andSt. Anthony School in Paterson, NJ; Mary Help ofChristians Academy in North Haledon, NJ; and LaSalle High School in Miami, FL. I am presently incharge of marketing at Mary Help.
“If I had it all to do over again, I would follow thesame path that had been marked out for me. I gaveup everything I had, sold all my possessions, butI’ve been given back 100 times more than I couldhave ever imagined! I truly rejoice in my vocationand I look forward to many more years serving Godthrough our young people.”

You shall rejoice in all the good which the Lord your God has given you.
Deuteronomy 26:11
100 the yearsof generous sacrifice
joyfully bornethat the Christ be known.
100 the yearsfilled with countless youthbrought up in Christ-Light.
100 the years,Silent sentinels
of a faithful GodWho brings the promised
hundredfold.
God is faithful to His promises!Go! Preach the Good Newsfar and wide! Go! Take with
you the bare minimum. Worry not forthe rest.
Our first Sisters took God at His wordand so they came with little else otherthan their fervor and their daring. They came fired with the desire toserve the poor Italian immigrantsflowing into this country.
Humble the beginning, fraught withdeprivation and hardship and oftenlacking even the necessities. But thiswas of small import in the face of thetremendous harvest to be reaped forthe Lord. With simple trust, theyplanted the seed and nurtured it sothat it could flourish in new soil. These astounding women set thefoundation for all we see today in theProvinces of the U.S. and Canada.
As we near the close of our Jubilee, itis fitting to remember our roots, tocherish them, to acknowledge them
Family TreasuresA Jubilee of Love
with gratitude, to celebrate those whopaved the way and the countlessothers who followed and still follow.
What are we celebrating? I think wecan well call it a Jubilee of Love; lovegiven and love received. It is acelebration filled with love, not thelove of mere words, but a loveincarnated in myriad actions ofservice, of giving the utmost ofoneself for the good of others.
A small stone was cast into a vastlake on July 16, 1908, and its ripplescontinue to spread on this NorthAmerican continent. Tens of
thousands of young people and theirfamilies have been the recipients of agratuitous love shared in a familyspirit. The keynotes of warmth andcordiality continue to play out in thisgrand symphony as we cross thethreshold of the next 100 years.
As these issues of Partners continue toshow, the love has not diminished norhas the commitment waned. Rather, both are vigorous and the desire tobring Christ and to give all for Christ isrenewed daily in each FMA and in ourcollaborators. Times have changed.Habits have been modified. Workshave opened and closed. Sisters havedied and new vocations have arisen. We have kept pace with the times.
What has never been lost is the spiritthat animates us, that Da Mihi Animas,Caetera Tolle (Latin: “Give me souls, take away the rest”) burning in theheart of our founders and setting usafire as well. Thus as we celebrate ourpast, we are celebrating our future aswell, a future that is bright with hope, with trust in a faithful God.
The harvest is still ripe with youngpeople calling out to us, drawing us tothem. Yes, let us praise the Lord, notonly in a Jubilee year, but at everymoment of our lives. He indeed hasbeen gracious to us and continues tobe gracious. Grafted on to Him, greatthings happen! With Mary at ourside, miracles abound!
Come then, let us celebrate andrejoice together!
For the Lord is good, sing to His name, for He is gracious! Psalm 135:3

What Constitutes “Peace”?Sr. Phyllis Neves’ Letter
“I offer you peace. I offer you love. I offer you friendship. I see your beauty. I hear your need. I feel your feelings. Mywisdom flows from the Highest Source. I salute that Source inyou. Let us work together for unity and love.”
Mahatma Gandhi
Peace is a gift from God, but is also a processwhere harmony is created between individualsand communities. Participation in this process
calls for an unfailing commitment on the part of all,not just governments and church leaders, but allindividual citizens. We all need to make a socialcommitment to build relationships of justice and peacein our homes, communities, countries, and the world.
It is appropriate to askourselves the question –what constitutes peace?Peace is not merely theabsence of war, nor can itbe reduced solely to themaintenance of a balanceof power between nations. It is founded on a correctunderstanding of thehuman person and requiresthe establishment of anorder based on justice andcharity. Peace is the fruit ofjustice. It is based onrespect for the rights of all.
Building peace takes time, sacrifice, and personalcommitment. As aChristian, working forpeace can never beseparated fromannouncing the Gospel which is, in fact, the “goodnews of peace.” Living out this good news requirescommitment and perseverance. The promotion ofpeace in the world is an integral part of what theChurch is about in continuing Christ’s work ofredemption on earth.
In order to be a voice for those for those whose rightsand human dignity are often at risk, our religious
Congregation of theDaughters of Mary Help ofChristians (Salesian Sisters ofSt. John Bosco) applied forstatus as a non-governmentalorganization of ECOSOC(Economic and SocialCouncil), a department ofthe United Nations. Wereceived special consultative status on June 6, 2008.This will allow us to speak out in the forum of the U.N.to help protect the rights of the weak and vulnerable.
As a global community, Christ’s message of lovechallenges us to promote a more humane society. We
pray for peace within oursociety, peace betweenindividuals and peoples –peace in our hearts, homes, and countries.
May Mary show us, in herSon, the Way of Peace.May she enlighten ourvision so we can recognizeChrist’s face in the face ofevery human person.
Let us never forget that thetask of fostering peace isone entrusted to all. Weall have a responsibility towork for peace in ourcommunity and to defendthe dignity of the humanperson. This responsibilityis entrusted to you and me.
What better way to remind ourselves of thisresponsibility than by recalling and living the words ofSaint Francis of Assisi, who wrote: “Make me achannel of your peace. Where there is hatred let mebring your love. Where there is injury, Your pardon,Lord. And where there is doubt, true faith in You.”
“Be the change you want to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi
On June 6, 2008, the Salesian Sisters were accredited as a non-governmental organization by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. This prestigious recognition allows theSisters to be present as an Institute in their own right at UN
meetings, and the possibility of being voices for the poorest andmost abandoned young people on this great world stage.

My wife, Tina, and I have been active in yourAdopt-a-Sister Program for many years. Youmight be surprised to know that my wife was
originally referred to your program by a friend of ourshere in Atlanta during a time when we were praying forhelp in trying to have a baby. My wife was so thankful tohave the prayers of Sr. Lucy Balistrieri.
It was several months before I learned that the programwas sponsored by the Salesian Sisters of North Haledon,NJ. It’s quite a small world, since I grew up in Totowaand went to high school at DePaul. My father actuallyhad a side business of driving students to Mary Help ofChristians Academy back in the 1970’s.
I should tell you also that Sr. Lucy must have prayed veryhard, because while we never gave birth to a child, weexperienced the miracle of adoption and we now have abeautiful two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Many thanksfor your prayers!

“It’s the middle of the night herein Germany and I’m surfing the
Internet and who do I see but Sr.Mary Rinaldi’s picture! I hope all iswell with you in New Jersey. I wasthinking about Salesian summer camptonight and how much fun we hadthere! What a super neat experience itwas! I think all kids should haveexperience growing up.
“I’ve been working for the Depart-ment of Defense Dependents Schoolsfor the past nine years as a SpecialEducation/Speech/LanguagePathologist. I have been lucky enoughto live in Japan and England, andnow Germany. Most of the kids Iwork with are little; 2-9 years or so,but I am housed at the Middle Schoolwhich goes up to grade 8.
This has been a neat experience for me. It’s cool living out in the
community, but also a challenge asyou can well imagine. Cultures and
language are very different than in theU.S. I took four years of German atPope John, so it’s not so bad –although it was very long ago!
Best wishes to all!Regina McKiernanMehlingen, Germany

IMMACULATA-LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL, MIAMI, FL – Immaculata-LaSalle High began its involvementwith the “Escuelita Maya” summer camp seven years ago. Escuelita Maya is program for the children of Mayafamilies. The parents of these children came from Guatemala, where the indigenous Maya people are persecuted anddiscriminated against. There are Salesian Sisters in Guatemala who operate a school/center for the Maya people andwho helped forge a connection with the Salesian Sisters in Florida. Many of these refugee families walked all theway from Guatemala to escape the persecution and poverty. They trekked through Mexico, across Arizona, anddown to Florida where these small communities were founded. Upon their arrival, many only speak their nativelanguage, Kanjobal, and had to learn Spanish and English. Immaculata-LaSalle High School helps run two summercamp sessions for these Guatemalan Maya children. Working during the current session are 25 Immaculata-LaSallestudents and alumni, and four Salesian students visiting from the Academy of Our Lady High in Marrero, LA.

Salesian Youth Report
In the spring, Sr. Mary Jackson, one of the star teachers at VillaMadonna School in Tampa, FL,
flew north to be inducted into theSports Hall of Fame in her hometownof Corning, NY. The athletes chosento be inducted into the Sports Hall ofFame have been outstanding athletesin their specific sport and havecontinued to make significantaccomplishments in the sports worldbeyond high school.
Sr. Mary attended Corning East HighSchool. Graduating in 1998, she wasthe first student in the school’s historyto earn a varsity letter six years in arow. While competing on the trackteam, her performance throwing theshot put broke school records whichare still in her name today.
She remembers while competing inthe State Meet, an opponent cameover to her asking: “Who are youcheering for in this event?” She firstreplied with a big smile, “I’m the onewho is throwing. Actually, I’m upnext!” Because of her small stature, many were surprised that she couldthrow that heavy metal ball so far!
Sr. Mary says she is even moreexcited today to be able to work withthe young and help them bloom asstrong Christians and disciplinedathletes. “All that I have learned fromsports has helped me become who Iam today,” she says. “Each coachhelped me grow; not only in the sport, but also growing as a whole person.”She knows personally the greatimpact young people can experiencefrom participating in sports and isthrilled to continue her involvementwith athletics and young people atVilla Madonna.
Sr. Mary Jackson Enters the Hall of Fame!
Sr. Mary Jackson shows Ebony Thomas, a seventh grade student at Villa Madonna Schoolin Tampa, FL, the correct form for the shot put. Sr. Mary should know:

The Theme of the May Crowning at St. Joseph’s ProvincialCenter in Haledon, NJ, was, “Mary, Star of Hope.” In
between decades of the Rosary, our elderly Sisters fervently sang“Star upon the Ocean, Maria,” and reflected upon Mary as “Starof Hope.” The Shrine of Mary Help of Christians was adornedwith glimmering stars dangling gracefully from an arch like windchimes. Sr. Lucy Balistrieri’s design talent made this all possible, with the help of Sr. Esther Cruz and our benefactor, JoanFontanella. And Sr. Mary Baroni (above) provided the finaltouch: a crown of flowers. Mary Help of Christians, Pray for us!
