Peter Drucker, the renowned leadership guru, spent his lifetime consulting and advising companies of all shapes and sizes. One of the foundational questions he asked leaders was, “What business are you in?” The question was of primary importance because quite often companies had either missed the mark or settled into a misunderstanding of their core purpose.

In our ever increasingly Post-Christian era, it is crucial that we understand what business we are in here at St. Luke’s. The early church had to clearly understand, receive, and pass on its mission for it to effectively share God’s love throughout the then known world. Our 21st Century world is just as (if not more) needy and lost as the 1st century was 2000 years ago. Our God and His world needs us to clearly understand what business we’re in.

We are in the Jesus Business. Our business is loving Him, worshipping Him, serving Him, and following Him. Our job is for His values to become our values. Our job is to be about His purposes. Our job and our joy is letting His Spirit not just be resident in us but President of our lives.

We are in the People Business. Our business is to love people even as Jesus has loved us. Our job is to meet the needs of people physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually just as Jesus did. Our job is to know that every person is created in the image of God and thus has absolute worth and value to God. People of all backgrounds, all races, all socio-economic classes, and all kinds of brokenness matter to God and thus to us.

We are in the Grace Business. Grace is the unmerited, unearned love of God that accepts us where we are and takes us where

we need to be. Our business is for all to be in God’s grace and God’s grace to be in all. Our job is first to receive and then to offer God’s grace to all. Grace is communicated and experienced through authentic Christ-centered relationships.

We are in the Transformation Business. Our business is meeting people at their places of need and taking them, leading them, encouraging them to go and grow to where they need to be. Our business is not in accepting the status quo but in always taking people further and deeper into God’s love and purpose for their lives. Many organizations and businesses in our day exist to help folks, but our business is changing folks! We’re not in the business of getting attendees but rather making disciples.

We are in the Reaching the Lost Business. Just as Jesus came to seek and save the lost, so now His Spirit in us has made His business our business. The Church is the only organization that exists for those who are not yet in it. Our business is to specifically target those who are disconnected from His love, His Body, and His purpose. God is not calling us to wait for the lost to come to us but for us to go to them!

So our mission is that “St. Luke’s UMC is a Christ-centered family of grace where all persons are welcome and wanted. We are committed to reach, grow, and send forth fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.”

Over the next few months you will personally be asked to help us be faithful to this mission. We need your help in birthing a new worshipping community. This new congregation, new worship gathering, will be held at our Southwest campus on Sundays at 5pm. We need your help to:

A note from Pastor AndyWhat Business Are You In?

1. Tell us folks you know who are unchurched; 2. Visit homes around our SW campus; 3. Host a gathering of 5-10 people where Matt or I come and share about this new congregation; 4. Be a “doula” who helps give birth to this new congregation by leading and being a part of it for the first six months; 5. Pray. “Unless the Lord builds this house those that build it labor in vain!”

(Ps. 127:1) It is my prayer and belief that every single St. Luke’s member will help give birth in some way to our fifth worshipping community. Please give me or Matt a call to let us know how you can help.

Jesus is looking for some business partners to join Him is His Kingdom Ventures!

Did you know that all sermons are availablefor you to listen to on the go?

St. Luke’s has sermon podcasts uploaded each weekfrom both campuses. You can find these under the

“worship” tab on our website or by searchingthe iTunes store for St. Luke’s Lubbock.

Vida AbundanteOur first spring in Lubbock has brought many

wonderful experiences! The green and colorful flowers send a powerful message of hope and life to the whole city. We have been using that message, as well as holiday events, to meet new people and help them find ways to connect with God.

In our little Vida Abundante congregation, we will be focusing on the many things that God is doing daily with us and how to share that with others as part of a life style. We need to remove some of the cultural and personal obstacles to help our congregation grow in not only living and learning the truth but sharing it too.

As we work to serve the Hispanic community in Lubbock, we have discovered that we really have two groups to reach: those whose primary language is Spanish, with some speaking of English, and those whose primary language is English, with little or no knowledge of Spanish.

We are reaching out to the first group in many ways, including our Spanish worship

services and ESL classes offeredat St. Luke’s. We pray for God to sendus more first generation Hispanic families. To reach the second group, we plan to make ourselves more visible to the neighborhood around St Luke’s Central campus by visiting the Maedgen Beach Club children’s families and practicing sports at the nearby park. I hope this prepares the way to have a high outreach at our next Block Party. We also plan to start a Spanish as a second language (SSL) class as way to help this group to improve their lives and connect to their culture. To reach both groups, we are fighting hard to learn more English as soon as possible.

We will be part of other conference events in which I will learn more about life, struggle, and expectations of the people here to do more relevant works serving our God! All of this is a lot of work for people who are both pretty new and pretty few, but we will do as much as humanly possible, knowing God will do His part! We are sure that is a perfect combination. -Jorge

A note from Pastor MattFor the past two years, St. Luke’s has been sending food each weekend to 90 students at Cooper

Independent School District who have financial challenges at home. This ministry was envisioned and created by Sarah Harlan and Allison Mosier from the Southwest Campus and named “Hands of Jesus.” It is time to pass the mantle of leadership for this ministry and new servants step up and be the “Hands of Jesus” for these children beginning with the 2015-2016 school year. There are several opportunities to serve as the Hands of Jesus in this ministry:

•A relationship needs to be established with the counselors at the 4 Cooper Elementary schools.•Once a month food needs to be ordered from Sam’s, picked up and stored at the SW Campus.•Once a month the food needs to be packed in sacks and stored at the SW Campus.•Every week the sacks need to be delivered to the 4 Cooper Elementary schools. This ministry does not need one person serving in every position, but really needs multiple

people to take an opportunity for leadership. •A person can be the liaison to the counselors to find out how many children are in need. •2 or 3 people can order and pick up the food from Sam’s •2 or 3 people can organize the monthly packing party at the SW campus (see picture)•2 or 3 people can deliver the sacks to the 4 Cooper Elementary schools. The blessing of serving in this ministry is that

Alison and Sarah have laid a prayer-filled foundation that is streamlined and financially sound. The 2015-2016 school year is already funded through private donations. The schools know St. Luke’s and relationships are established. St. Luke’s volunteers already know about the packing parties and look forward to getting together to serve. We want to continue this ministry at St. Luke’s, but need some servants to step up and take leadership beginning in mid-August 2015 and serve through May 2016.

The effectiveness of this ministry is shown through several testimonies. The principal at one of the elementary schools told us that she had been praying for someone to step up and help these children in need right before we asked them if we could partner with them.

Another Copper staff member remarked about the impact this ministry not only had on the kids, but the witness of Jesus Christ it proclaimed to the teachers who also were telling their friends and families.

The reality of the witness of this ministry came from a child himself who was receiving the food for the first time. When the counselor gave them food to take home, the child asked where the food came from. The counselor told them, “from someone who cares about you very much.” The elementary-age child said, “You mean Jesus?”

Please prayerfully consider how the Holy Spirit is calling you to be the Hands of Jesus to 90 children that not only need food on the weekends, but more importantly need to know that Jesus Christ cares enough about them, to have a person they will never know, to give them a little sack of food.

Music MinistryI hope your summer has

started off with a BANG! It sure has for me, as I have been working on the latest musical “Doc Roc and the Amazing Canon.” It is a musical about the formation of the biblical canon and the notion of the Bible being God’s word. I have been working very diligently to distill the main ideas of such a broad and complex topic for children to grasp and understand. This will also be a useful topic for the church and for seekers, as the integrity of the Bible is at stake. In spite of such a serious topic, the musical will be entertaining and fun (y’all know I like a good laugh). The mission of Music Camp is to educate children in the church and to reach out to children and families who are unchurched. Please consider inviting a family with children to participate in Music Camp. Music Camp is for children entering 1st through entering 6th grade and is July 13-17 with a performance on Sunday, July 19. Registration is online or in person on the first day of music camp.

As you enjoy the summer and begin planning for the fall, I invite you to consider participating or serving some way in the music ministry. There are many ways to serve in both performance and support

work. If you play an instrument and read music, or just love to sing, please contact me about our music ensembles. Childcare is available for all of the ensembles. If you have organizational or technical skills, ask me about the Library team or Technical Crew. Your help would be greatly appreciated by the church and me .

Our 8th annual Block Party will be on Wednesday, August 26th. This should be a big turning point for our outreach to the community, as our neighbors may realize that this is not a fleeting gesture of hospitality. The music ministry will invite children from Music Camp to perform several numbers from the musical. This will bring families from our community and from all around Lubbock. Let’s prepare our hearts and minds for this event and be intentional to welcome people into our church by engaging in warm conversation. The natural temptation is to huddle up in our normal groups. Let’s all step out in faith and help our church grow.

I would also like to celebrate two musical ensembles. The Bellchoir performed a Mother’s Day concert at the Carillon

Fireside Lounge on May 9th and included musical guests Kara Copeland, Nathaniel Coward, Karen Dawson and Patti Harper. It was a well-attended concert and the group did great! The Youth Ensemble, which performed on May 17th at both Central Campus services, did an absolutely wonderful job! And, the orchestra provided a beautiful backdrop to their anthem. Please take time to speak words of encouragement to these young people. Encourage them to continue to use their musical gifts in church, as many activities compete for their time. They need affirmation from their church family that their musical contribution matters.

Finally, continue pondering the question from last month: “If God designed a worship service, what would it look like?” I don’t have the space this month to delve deeply into this question, other than noting that the question reminds us that God, the object of worship, probably has certain preferences of His own. What are these preferences and how do they inform our worship of Him?

Have a blessed summer!

Ragamuffin YouthHey Hey Church Family!

When I was a student, summer was a time for sleeping in, eating cereal for breakfast (at 11:00), working part time, and maybe hanging out at the pool for a few (seven) hours! But these days summer has been hijacked and changed from a relaxing break from schoolwork and extra curricular activities, to 3 months filled with performances, full-time jobs, trips every other week, and extra curricular PRACTICES! When did our students get so busy they can’t be kids???

The entirety of scripture from Genesis 2 to the New Testament speaks of the importance of Sabbath, yet it still seems to be a rarely understood and even more rarely practiced discipline in our church families. The discipline of Sabbath was not commanded by God simply as a day off from our professions, nor as an excuse to sit around and watch football (or golf, or baseball…pretty much any nap-inducing sport). I was once taught by a wise prophet that Sabbath means “to cease and feast” which leads me to wonder how are we ceasing and feasting this summer? With school out of the way for a while, we students (all of us) have no better opportunity to cease from our busyness, our heavy workload, and our stressful relational dynamics than during the summer. For the next three months, I want to encourage you to cease from filling your calendar with sports, work, and other activities or trips, and consider feasting on God’s presence in the midst of community. This could be as simple as giving the Holy Spirit 5 minutes of silence every morning so that He may begin to speak to you, or it could be committing to be involved in some of our Ragamuffin Student Ministry activities, and experiencing God through his Church. I can’t promise you a nirvana-like experience every time you come to a youth event, but I can promise that the more you choose fellowship or to “be still,” the more you will “know God” and His “peace that surpasses all understanding.” Join us as we meet together in bible studies, camps, and just some good ole’ summer hangouts and maybe Sabbath will no longer be a feign word or forgotten discipline.

Kurtis Vanderpool

Missions & Outreach Summer vacation is a very coveted time in our society. It is when our families come together

from great distances for reunions. We have the opportunity to go on vacations for longer than a weekend. The weather is sunny and perfect for spending time playing outside or going swimming. This summer especially, I am so proud to see the St. Luke’s family dedicating so much of this precious time to the LORD, both here in Lubbock and all over the world. I would like to showcase just a few of the awesome things happening this summer.

Belize Mission Trip- If you aren’t already on the prayer list for the Belize mission trip, find someone on the trip (like Pastor Matt) and see if you can pray for them! They have a very full schedule of ministry that we believe is going to pay huge dividends for the church and community they are going to serve.

Juarez Mission Trip- In late July, we’re headed to Juarez for homebuilding and medical missions with Proyecto Abrigo. It’s not too late to sign up if you would like to join us! Contact Andy Hurst or myself if you would like to sign up.

Youth Mission Opportunities- St. Luke’s Youth stay as busy as anybody during the summer, with summer camps, summer homework (yikes!), extracurricular activities, and youth events. In addition to all of this, the high school students are taking a trip to Dallas to partner with the Missional Wisdom Foundation and the middle school students will help out a local family through a service project. Awesome job, guys!

St. Luke’s Missionary Conference- This August, St. Luke’s will be having its missions conference to showcase how God has been moving on a global scale. We are bringing in missionary guest speakers and members of the St. Luke’s mission teams to testify to us of God’s great power and love being poured out on the nations. You don’t want to miss this! Details to follow soon.

In addition to these St. Luke’s trips, many individuals from our church will participate in local and world missions with various Christian organizations. I am excited to announce that Cori Overstreet and I will be joining a 2-week mission team in Israel with International Church Planting (InterCP) doing evangelism and prayer ministry in various cities in West Bank and Israel. Despite many obstacles that could prevent us from going, the LORD is constantly leading us and providing for us so that these conflicting peoples, the Palestinians and the Israelis, can have access to the saving grace of Jesus found in the Bible. More than any political, military, or economic solution, these people need Jesus, the only one capable of healing their hurts and reconciling their conflicts. When I was in Israel as a student missionary, I saw a church comprised of Jews, Arabs, and foreigners praising the LORD together in one heart. It was beautiful and I hope that one day Israel as a nation will once again be defined by their relationship with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Amen!

We need partners for our ministry there to be effective. We need your prayers for our team, for the people we meet, and for the sake of spiritual warfare. We are actively fundraising (and the LORD is providing beautifully), but we are not 100% funded yet and we could use support if the LORD is calling you to do so. Your partnership would mean the world to us.

Thank you for all that you are in Christ and all that you are doing in Jesus’ name. I am so proud of you, Robby Wiginton Missions Intern

Missions & OutreachIntroducing Global Christian Fellowship

Global Christian Fellowship (GCF) is a ministry for international students through the Texas Tech Wesley Foundation under the leadership of Hanna Lee and Weston Waldo. At the beginning of April, St. Luke’s began to host a branch of GCF specially designed for visiting professors on sabbatical and international families with young children. Our first two months of this ministry have been a huge success and we have grown from 7-8 active participants to around 20 in this short time. Our Thursday nights include fellowship time, a Bible study, group discussion, and a meal together. It is truly a blessed time and the Spirit of the LORD is moving in the lives of these university leaders from China and other nations.

GCF would like to invite you to participate in this ministry! Here are a few opportunities for how you can get involved:

•Come and participate- these visiting scholars love talking with Americans to practice their English, to learn American culture and about the Bible, and to build relationships

•Join a cook team- Part of our ministry is building relationships around the dinner table; we’re looking to create 4 cook teams that will rotate monthly

•Volunteer opportunities- From giving rides to the grocery store to volunteering as a host family, there are a number of ways you can make a Kingdom impact in the lives of international families here in Lubbock through simple acts of kindness

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the nameof the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” Matthew 28:19

Global Christian Fellowship meets on Thursday evenings at 5pm at Central. Please contact Andy Hurst or Robby Wiginton for more information about this ministry.

Did you know that simply signing in at church assures you will be prayed for? Our MPG (Monday Prayer Group) team prays for everyone who registers their attendance on Sunday, as well as any

prayer requests. Also, joining MPG is a good way to stay efficient in your prayer life, so come join us every Monday at Central at 8:30 am or at Southwest at 9am for about an hour. It’s the perfect way to start your week. See Debbie Birchfield, Cindy Ferguson, Becky Page, Tim or Susan Ebelthite for more info, or call the church office.

MPG is also trying to gather names of all friends and family of St. Luke’s members that are serving in the military, so we can keep them lifted in prayer. Please email Debbie Birchfield at [email protected] with names and ANY prayer requests for the MPG group.

MPG is fueling St. Luke’s through prayer!

Let Us Pray! One of the most important ways

to serve our Lord and our church is to pray. And we have several opportunities now at St. Luke’s.

Every Sunday, a person prays for all prayer requests and each person by name at each service at the Central campus. Usually in the office or Prayer Room, we can pray quietly, as we lift up the requests and the names.

We are in need of more people to pray. We are on a rotating list, praying once every 2-3 months. If you would like to serve in this way, please call Cindy Ferguson at 795-5937.

Also our Monday Morning Prayer Group is open to anyone! We meet at 8:30 each Monday in the Prayer Room (6), and would welcome You!

Appreciation NotesSt. Luke’s, Thank y’all so very much for serving us a delicious and bountiful meal after Mother’s funeral. Many more people than I imagined came own to eat and there was still plenty. I think we gathered 12 baskets of leftovers. Thank you. As St. Luke’s Congregation ages, y’all are very busy, and I know you have other things to do. Thank you for your patience, your hospitality and generosity. ~The Copenhavers

St. Lukes Staff & Family, WOW! We want to extend our appreciation to you for making our Friends of Ceta Dinner a success. Over $103,000 was raised for the ministry of Ceta Canyon. Thank you for hosting this event at St. Luke’s Southwest and for all the set up, being a table sponsor, praying, and a great testimony from Lindsay. God Bless You! Kathy McDonald Ceta Canyon

St, Luke’s, Thank you so much for supporting me in prayer and financially as I follow the Lord’s calling to Mozambique and Thailand this summer. The Staff of St. Luke’s and the people of the church are so special to me and I will forever be grateful for the love I have learned from you. I pray you are blessed as you have so richly blessed me. Thank you for sowing into my life, and in turn, the nations. Love, Abbey SmithFollow along this summer www.abbeytsmith.wordpress.com
